Off Topic: Why ppl degrade thenself so much to defend Blizz? Seriously i can't believe the amount of shit im reading here.
Gameplay ? Dude, whos talking about gameplay ??? The OP opened a discussion about graphics of itens in your inventory. He didn't mentioned gameplay anywhere. Now if don't want to talk aboout anything besides gameplay, don't go in a graphicsn thread and start a discussion about something totally irrelevant (to the topic).
We are discussing item icons. Any little thing that is not itens icon should not be mentioned in this thread.
Nobody's degrading themselves here but you. I'm interested in discussing graphics as they apply to the game in question. We're talking about the art style, so comparing the icons to the overall look and feel of the game in question, though it offends your tender sensibilities, is perfectly appropriate.
And don't pretend like you're some kind of moderator. Nobody gives a damn about what you think is on-topic.

Apply this to computer graphics. GPU and vRAM have increased exponentially since D1.
Which is honestly not that relevant. The edge of graphics capability, in my opinion, occurred somewhere around 1998. The edge for 2D games is even earlier than that. By edge, I mean that graphics after that point became good enough to cease needing improvement. Specifically, this includes resolution adaptations and high color palettes, which games like DI and SC didn't have. Even then, games with Windowed mode I don't really care, even. Just with all the recent monitors and I have a laptop monitor, resolution is a bitch.
So has the ingenuity and available tools of graphic artists.
No.
Your example is faulty because you're comparing Diablo 1 to McDonalds it seems. For me it's more like this:
Joe spent a while going to this little non-franchise burger shop in his home town where they made really nice burgers, because they loved their craft. Then some friend took him to a 4-star restaurant. The restaurant looks a lot nicer, with waiters and everything, and the burger may even look prettier w/e. It is backed by this rich famous company that has access to all this, I don't know, cutting edge technology. It also costs a lot more. But the burger still tastes the same, if not worse.
Good graphics design trumps technology every time and SCII and DIII are proof of that IMO. Especially these games also suffer in the audio department (I'm not talking about Matt Uelmen). If they could update resolution and color palette on SC1 + add all the mechanical modifications (auto-mining, etc.), I'd rather play that. SCII is slow, WCIII'ish, and has awful sound work and animations compared to the original. Among newer titles, it's greatly inferior to AoE III, for instance. The only reason it gets anywhere for me is because it's, well, SC.
This raises the collective consciousness, and thus the collective standard, for what games can look like. This tends to inform the gamer's expectations.
The collective consciousness also runs after the most recent fad out there and demands the latest little thing because it's considered cool. I don't know why you bring up the collective consciousness here since it's extremely dumb. I'm not talking about whether most people will like Diablo III's design. This is very hard for me to judge since I lack figures on SCII.
The collective standards sees only shaders and nothing else. They do not see design at all, for them it does not exist.
I think it's really admirable that you are less affected by the impact of raised expectations.
I'm not sure what you mean by this. I believe you should be aware that I am not a die hard Diablo fan at all. I am here because I like the series, just like any other series, and looking forward to it. My expectations for DIII are not different from expectations for SW:TOR or TES 5. But my expectations are typically high, both for gameplay and design. I can accept a game that doesn't meet my expectations, play it, and enjoy it, but it will lose the title of great game for me, and I want every game to be great.
Which means I'll whine about graphics, cooldowns, and everything else.
Since the, "We've only seen low level items in game", and the "They'll likely improve in detail after the Beta" statements have been beaten dead, I'll detail my third thought on this topic.
I wish I could find the official work on this, but Blizzard pretty much stated how Diablo's armor art direction is almost, dare I say, "realistic". Not in that flaming mauls, or the Diablo universe in general is, but instead the base of the armor style. Diablo has a Gothic theme to it, and the gear follows this for the most part. The Barb is a great example of this. If you're expecting a giant blue sword, laced with ribbon and saturated in shinny gems, you are going to be disappointed. High end gear will look high end, and will draw attention to you, this isn't to say it will be flamboyant though, at least not in most cases.
If you go into the game expecting Diablo, I expect you'll likely be satisfied. If you go in expecting light sabers and Inuyasha style Tetsusaigas (referring to the obnoxious size) I expect you will be disappointed.

I'm not looking for flaming rainbow swords and bows with glither. I'm looking for something that is realistically rendered. Something like D2 but 10x better because its 2011 not 1998; which the art styling looks like.

In that case, just keep in mind we are likely in the eye of the storm as far as item polishing goes. Environments can be polished early on seeing as they likely won't change much. Items on the other hand can go through a lot of texturing around this time of development, and up until days before a Gold copy is chosen as the retail version. I expect to see small texture differences between the Beta, and release.
@Umpa, I like this one better

Perhaps. I personally dislike it overall. NWN items were flat, as well, but I never had an issue with them (and they're cartoony). I think it's more the boring look of all the items. Lack of detail and definition. If anything, it's more about it being drawn fill-tool style than being flat.
The rest of the pics you provided are very low level and they look rather plain.
That's a fail argument. Just compare them to DII's low level items, or even DI's. Look at DII's clubs, axes, daggers, armors early game. They all had a very different style to them that I liked a lot better.
However, a better comparison may be to Diablo II's Beta paper doll.
Diablo II and Diablo III have very different development cycles, so comparing their betas is quite invalid. That's like saying that to discuss SCII's graphics, we have to compare SCII's beta to WarCraft in Space. It doesn't work like that. If you look at SCII's development, beta and release weren't that different. Furthermore, that DII screenshot is clearly Diablo I influenced, which is not the case for Diablo III, which isn't artistically influenced by anything.
Again, I'm not talking about the way the items look when they are worn. Only when you are looking in the inventory.
I hardly think inventory icons are a big issue, especially when they match the way the gear looks on your character. I also suspect there has yet to be a good amount of detailing to small things such as inventory icons. As for how the icons match, In Diablo 2 a full plate armor could fall, in your inventory it could look like a heavy plate, than on your character be this one shouldered armor. This will not happen in Diablo 3. From the icon, to your character, the item will stay true to how it appears. This was shown at last years Blizzcon, participial at 4:32 in the Crafting Sanctuary Panel. Gear will also appear differently to different classes. A clothe cap for the Wizard, might look like a metal cap on the Barb. This is also shown in the panel during the section I linked to.
Also, in my opinion, the icons in the Blizzcon demonstration look great.

The item icons in D3 remind me of the icons in D1.
I'm cool with that.
I don't really ever remember drooling over if D2's item icons looked better than D1's, and I doubt I ever will. It simply doesn't matter. It's an icon. I guarantee the items in D3 look better on your character than in D2. Isn't that what's really important?
That image alone is enough to close this thread out of ownage. Look at those icons! They're sick! And obviously not high tier either!
They are very well rendered by some of THE greatest artists in the gaming industry.

Only thing quite lame in that screen is the male Wizard's posture. What the hell kind of stance is that anyway?
...hi Umpa!
Heya bud! Ya, I thought it was kind of odd myself...On a side note, how cool is it that the art is getting thrown into the interface like that? You KNOW the artists are really stoked about that. Their concept work made it INTO the game literally.

This made me laugh.
I was going to say the same thing. The way the icons look in that picture are really bad. It looks like the artist was on a really short deadline and had to hand something in so he just drew something fast. Your seriously going to tell me that those gloves, armor, boots, helm and axe look ownage? If they were rendered they would look nasty but not in that 2d sketch.
When you look at the icon in the inventory and then see the character in actual game play the items look different. I'm not talking about seeing the icons worn and you see the items on the character drawing right next to it like in that picture. In that instance, yea the items look the same. But when you see the items on the character they look nothing alike. I don't know how many more times I have to say that.
Your all tripping, the items REALLY do not look that impressive, your just for lack of a better description, diablo whipped, and you would pretty much love anything they throw at you,
look REAL close at the items, they are ok ya, nothing to throw a hissy fit about, but seriously not that impressive, I know 15 year olds who can draw armor/weapons that would blow those away

If they look alright from that res they probably look great in game. They could always be placeholders anyway, there might be more work planned for them.

Thing about these icons.... people either LOVE them, or they HATE them. Or they think they're just ok. One thing is for sure.. the hater tears are DELICIOUS.
