One thing that I think I'm really excited about in DIII is not having to start over to make a new build. One of the things I really disliked about DII is that your characters were disposable, to a point where you didn't really feel connected to them. You'd level a character, make a build, get bored with the build, and then make a new character, rinse, repeat. Especially when ladder was introduced, and when resets happened, your then non-ladder character pretty much became recycle bin material.
I think that not having to make as many characters to try different builds will be much better. I like the idea of sticking with the same character for a longer period of time, I'll feel more connected to the character, thus more connected to the game. I really think it will be totally awesome to have a character that you'll stay with, & that you won't just feel like it's a character you will just delete later if you get tired of the build.
i liked building from scratch, it made me relate more to my characters since it required more practice and tweaking to get things perfect, or as close to perfect as you can go.

Remember the String of Ears
"to the worm in horseradish, the world is horseradish."
Can you explain to me what you'll do when you reach level 60? Then there's no more leveling up to do. IMO, the only real thing to do is maybe play some pvp if you're into that and then start a new character from level 1. But please elaborate.
I'll be looking to optomize my equipment and get into hardcore as my confidence allows.
Personally, I think the endgame is going to be much more elaborate than before and there will be plenty to do when level capped. I find no reason to assume we'll see 60 as the new 99 with no new goals except finding items for our alts and pvp.

Dude... there will be tons of end game content. I think it will be just as hard to get a perfect character in this game as it was to get to level 99 in D2. based on the gem and rune system's announced. Finding these things will not be easy. Plus all the gold put into vendors for upgrading. I love the gem idea. It will be rare to have the highest level gem and rune. (We'll see if the rune actually gets implemented) but still. Lets also not forget that they are toying around with the idea of a fourth difficulty... I don't know if that's been announced yet officially. But it has been rumored at least.

When I'm level 60 obviously I'll keep playing to find better gear, probably go through the storyline again, probably some pvp, then when I want another build I'll just change the build and play some more. Eventually I'll make a different class and start on that one. However with the rune system, gems, and crafting, I'll have my hands full for a long time.

Agreeing to all other posts I'd like to add that by the time I get to that point, I expect patch updates for content/feature upgrades, and additional balancing that could change class mechanics causing large experimentation to the millions of characters combinations... oh and on top of that if I'm super bored I'll farm and maybe purchase a blizzard item for free through auction house. Overall I expect many years enjoyed in this game.

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
Funny, all my friends are pissed at the respec system.
I think I used to be. So I can maybe see where they are coming from. It was hard for me to get out of the grinding aspect of getting to level 99. I wanted the same thing for Diablo 3. But I came to realize, I just need end game content. Diablo 3 will have plenty of that rest assured.

There is a SERIOUS lack of appreciation here for the more arcade-ish feel of just "making a char, getting it up and then not having to stick to it, and there's plenty other unique builds to start the game over with".
Diablo was always a short term RPG to me, not a long term one...

I mean, you can still do all that, minus the chore of needing to re-grind levels and lower difficulty content again on the exact same class.
I really have to wonder what you mean by short-term? If you were never that invested in it or what?
I'm still dissapointed of having respec system in D3. I think u are getting more into the build when u level with it from lvl1. U start with lower skill in skilltree, thinking of how optimize your leveling with synergy system to get your build viable in late. And that is crappy in wow that u can be just DD during ur way to max lvl, then (like Druids) need every item in high level instances, respec and became maxleveled goodgeared Anyone - healer, tank... It's stupid that u just was swinging ur hammer for months and then in one moment became powerfull healer. And there's gonna be the same ridiculous stuff - u use frost magic for a long time, master your skills in that way, and then u somehow become mighty arcane mage... I dunno, that's just not right and feels sad.
sorry if this is a mini hijack of the thread but...
I think this is an interesting topic in itself.
Baracuda would like to see lvl 60 = ~D2 85, which like Leon said, was fairly easy to reach. Leon would like to see lvl 60 = ~D2 95, which was IMO a good amount of time, but there was nothing grindy about it. And like I said earlier, id like to see lvl 60 equate to D2 99+...
Baracuda I am wondering why you would like lvl 60 to be somewhat easy to reach? Leon im wondering why you would like lvl 60 to be hard to reach, but at the same time be a far more accessible then D2's 99?
Is it simply because you hated the grindy aspect of d2? I myself dont understand why anyone would want to eliminate a repayable factor so early in a game. Since the difference between level 95 and 99 in D2 was actually quite negligible (in terms of actual power), it wasn't exactly taking anything tangible away from the gameplay experience. It just gave those who cared enough about the 'achievement' of 99 something extra to do in end game scenarios.

I agree on some level with what you said. The reason multi-faceted classes came around was because of how hard it was to find a healer in some MMO's or a tank for that matter. All because without them, the instance could never be run. I feel that is a mistake some MMO's made. I believe tank and healer builds should be thrown out all together and instances reworked to encompass a team of heros that battle it out with out relying on such things like tanks and healers. That is why I love Diablo!!! Sure, you kinda have a tank... but not really... You have to rely on skill and yourself to get by in a battle.
As for respec portion. I think its fine in Diablo 3 because no player has to rely on a tank or healer to play the game. So respecing should not be a problem for you.

It gets lame...
Technically all chars have expiration dates in D2, lost so much stuff when I didn't log in every three months, my fault I know >_<
I know that is highly unlikely however.
