Hey, blizzard constantly says that online only creates a much more secured environment.
hence - eliminates duping and botting which negatively affects the game's economy.
That sound pretty weird to me since on of the cons of D2 economy was duping and botting (the randomness was just right!)
now:
1) D2 suffered from duping
2) D2 suffered from botting.
3) D2 was online only (offline chars are irrelevant - im talking about the online economy)
so, how online only D3 will vary from this? it seems D3 economy might suffer these plagues as well and once again our beloved game will fail in containing a strong economy.
Part of the idea i think is that D2's offline characters allowed hackers to have a full view of what data is stored for items and what not. D3 everything will be online, when you log out and close the game, you will have zero character/item/inventory data to look at. Also i'm sure it will have the same Warden software that wow uses to help them detect cheats / hacks, not perfect but it all adds up. D3 will not be flawless, there is no such thing as 100% security when dealing with a connected online environment. If you want 100% security, unplug the internet completely.

You're missing the point that they can track your activity second by second and save it for future reference. These tracking files take up almost no space at all, thus how they're able to track everyone, everywhere, all the time. This stops, or at least makes it extremely hard to dupe, bot, or bend the system in general because any third part programs will be detected immediately, dupes can be identified by their source. Say you dupe a rare axe, the system will likely find it via its lack of source, as in where did it come from? What monster dropped it? Why isn't that drop logged on our records? I can't say for sure this is how it works, because frankly it's likely 1000 times more complex, but make no mistake a constant connection will make is extremely hard to brake the system. Take WoW for example, Diablo 3 will likely have a similar, if not higher success rate for staying clean.

wow managed to handle duping?
As far as I know from playing wow(i'm far from a hardcore player so take this for what its worth), I've never heard of duping being an issue. The only real issue in wow is botters doing AFK farming, and account hackers stealing your gold. I think all items in wow may be serialized so that if a dupe ever was created, it would be invalidated by the server and instantly deleted.(thats pure speculation though)

Not to mention there aren't free trial accounts of Diablo 3 that can be used to advertise with. Most likely any and all advertising that is done wanting players to use some third party site will be swiftly penalized.

Most of the account "hacking" is done via keyloggers and phishing scams. This generally means they were doing something they shouldn't have and became infected or are very naive. Having an authenticator on the account prevents a high amount of this traffic from ever occurring. I don't think I've ever heard or come across any duping method in the 4+ years I've been playing WoW.
Duping will be much more profitable in Diablo 3 than in any other Blizzard game because the results can immediately be profited from before Blizzard has time to react to the information.

MAYBE, but don't forget that not only will everything in Diablo 3 be tracked in general, but I'm about 99.99% positive that entering an item into either AH will immediately cause a search on the item's history of existence, and if there is another item somewhere that has identical information, and the item history of the character who found it, and the profile the character was under, and related sales histories... and so on (so on encompassing whatever else Blizzard's machines will track.) THEN the item has to even sell. The RMAH isn't instant. There's another human being on the other side.

Just like what the person a couple above me said, D3 is almost completely server side. D2 had a offline mode, which means that the ENTIRE game had to be on the clients computer, where you can view item data, scripts, boss and mob AI and more. With D3 you will have almost nothing on your computer as far as game files go, you are playing a game on another computer through yours.
Duping was a problem created by the D2 engine. D3 runs on a completely different (and, by all reasonable assumptions, more robust) set of scripts. If duping wasn't one of the first things they eliminated through this entirely new engine I'd be extremely surprised.

B.net 2.0 is a little better than B.net.

Basically, like it has been said before, duping and hacking will get to be common on Diablo 3 on the Battle.net realms.
The only thing that might help is, as Scyber said, B.net 2 is a bit better then B.net 1. Other then that, the only reason why it's online is for DRM.
The main reason why WoW is so secure when it comes to duping is that, again as it's been said before in this very thread, all the items have an individual item code. If Diablo 3 does that, I don't see Duping to be very common, but I don't see Diablo 3 having that. :/ It would be nice if it did though!

It's been said before by people who have absolutely no fucking clue how a proper server/client architecture works, nor have any insight into what it takes to actually dupe items. All item code + data on the server == every item that exists gets a unique hash/identification data == duped items are either immediately culled by the server, or get logged + flagged for CS investigation. The chances of dupes are slim to none, and if any do emerge, you can be pretty damn sure that they will be fixed promptly.
Botting is another thing entirely. I have no doubt that people will attempt, and succeed, to make bots. It's not possible to stop that kind of developement. Fuck, there are tons of free software you can use to make bots. Here's a random one you can use: http://www.autoitscript.com/site/autoit/
The thing is, these bots are probably going to be shitty. You think people are going to be able to make D2NT quality bots that can MF every TC87 zone with a hammerdin in 15 minutes? Not likely, and if they do, they can probably expect a swift kick in the nutsack from Warden, or a ban later.
You guys may think that Blizzard doesn't give a fuck based on what eventually became of D2, but you are all quite dilusional if you think Blizzard has spent any significant time or resources to D2 since.. 2005? They take keeping their games secure extremely seriously.

Now, are we talking about the same Warden that works D2? I stopped playing D2 about '06, so I don't know if they made Warden really awesome after that, but if I remember, the main thing Warden does is ban people for the crime of joining games too fast.
I'm honestly asking, because I don't know if Blizzard made Warden this great awesome program or if it's main focus is still banning people for joining games too fast.
Honestly though, all joking aside, bots will take a little bit of time, just like they did for D2, but they will be there, and with the RMAH, there will be more incentive for botting, so I would probably say D3 will get bots faster then D2.
it prevents it because there is very little if any of the item or character data on your computer. Even your online characters in D2 had something of them saved on your pc. My understanding, is that nothing of your characters or your equipment or such will actually be on your pc. They will all be 100% stored on the blizzard servers.
In regards to the WoW comment, I've never heard of duping, and I started playing in 2006. As for botting, it's very prevalent. As for people saying WoW is unhackable, that's not true. There's hacks where players are below the ground in order to freely mine everything, and I've seen multiple players hacking in battlegrounds, where their speed was way more than 1000%, which is not possible at all. Are these players now super geared at 85? I doubt it, they probably got banned a long time ago. The point: if WoW is hackable, D3 is hackable. Heck, technically everything is hackable. The only questions are: how long will that hack last before it's detected/fixed/prevented, and how long will it be until the player that used the hack is banned.

so they should not use the excuse : "online only is good for you since its going to solve this problem"
