During my time playing Diablo 2 and discussing Diablo 3, I have come to a realization.
Diablo items are like promiscuous women. Some items are rather common, while others are unique and very attractive.
At first the attractive items are like all women, virgins, until a few lucky adventurers finally gets some. And after someone does finally get this attractive item, it sort of loses a bit of its luster, its appeal. And over time, as more and more people acquire said item, it becomes rather common place. The item becomes a whore, if you will. And people no longer feel the sense of accomplishment when acquiring it. Ohh every now and again, a new adventurer will come along and brag about acquiring said item, but he is quickly ridiculed by the veterans. The veterans will then of course advise the young adventurer to check his stats, and advise him to upgrade as soon as possible.
Such is the life of a Daiblo item.
PS:
This is just a joke, I only thought it up while trying to rationalize the perspective of the hardcore Diablo fans regarding items. It is a rather shocking how similar these two things are, and just how prevalent this socially backwards mentality is.
The biggest misconception in Diablo is that my gear hurts you in some way.
As if somehow, if I have and item it somehow cheapens it for everyone else.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
No I hate that analogy :P. Also it's spelt lustre.
I guess I know what you mean. To me, as there are finite items in the game, it can be rather obvious what the 'best' item is for your build in a specific slot. Working hard and say... finding those items means they'll never lose their 'lustre', they're a diamond in the rough, so to speak, and you'll love them so much it hurts. This here alludes to your analogy without using women as the focal point as I just think that's... wrong.
However the best items will indeed lose their lustre if you just buy them all straight after getting your character to lvl 60.
I never saw any sort of item elitistry in Diablo 2, no one would say "Your Bonehew Ogre Axe sucks why don't you upgrade to an ebotd warpike?", simply because that kind of item is both extremely rare and extremely valuable, no one actually expects people to have the best gear really. Atleast not in Diablo 2.

"A lot of fellows nowadays have a B.A., M.D., or Ph.D. Unfortunately, they don't have a J.O.B."

You messed up this analogy a bit. The part where you get bored (loses luster) is just time and access to the item. Has nothing to do with others getting a similar/same item.
There's an old saying, for every beautiful woman out there, there's a man who's bored of her.
I'd say they're more like a box of chocolates, because you never know what you're going to get until you poke a hole (hack and slash) in the bottom of the (the) chocolate (monster) and look inside it (take it to Cain) or take a bite (use a scroll of identify).

Does upgrading the kitchen count? BAH-ZING!
Obligatory sexist joke, check!

The question is, how many sockets does your woman have, cause that can get pretty pricey
