That number seemed particularly high to me and got me thinking.
Does anyone think that D3 will break any gaming sales records?
Anyone want to make any predictions on how many copies will be sold in the first day/week/month?
I think a 100k or so will be sold in the first week(sold, rather they can play it right after purchase, is another thing all together), so I don't think D3 will break any reccords.
If by chance they release a console version at the same time, it could be a hell of a lot more then that, but I still don't think the numbers would be record breaking(although the numbers would be high up there).

BREAKING NEWS:
Activision-Blizzards newly released game Diablo 3, a long awaited sequel to the previous title Diablo and Diablo 2, has just broken the world gaming record for making the fans spontaneously jizz in their pants. This caused a record sales number for tissue papers, and high water bills from the flushing of said tissue paper. More on this at 11!

SC2 sold 2 million on the first day. I think you're lowballing your number there.

considering this is one of the most hyped games (regardless of let downs and push backs) of all time. over 12 years of waiting. AND releasing console versions of the game, i think it will DEFINITELY break records. possibly the first day. and over the course of it being available for xbox and/or playstation it will definitely break record sales over the course of a few months. of course most of these people will play the game for a very short time and quit but the beginning sales will be insane. between digital downloads and hard copies.
The servers will choke hard, the first week, I garantee it. Unlike Starcraft II, where you login, but basicly play offline, D3 is 100% online. Million people will break the servers, but we'll see.
You'll probably see a difference in the internet traffic report just from d3 release.

Yeah, kind of like when CoD:Black Ops came out and they only set up enough servers four a million or so people when they had over 2 million pre-orders. They should have some kind of forethought.

I remember playing WoW at 2 am on the 1st night, and the 1st server I picked was so bogged down you couldn't do anything. A couple hours later the server either crashed or they took it down, and so I started playing on another random server. I had no problems at all after that.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
I dont know about a record, probably for any Diablo game, sure. But hardcore wow people would ignore it, but next door Andrew, 35 with 2 kids might pic it up instead.
I think it will slowly build up to a epic sale, within some aspects resonable categories, like "Action RPG Best Award" or something..
The rating alone might make it nearly impossible for it to break any records. Based on how the beta is now though. I believe it will probably be one of the best rpgs of all time =3. My greatest hope is that Inferno difficulty is fun to play lol.

"Rating" as in "M for Mature"? Even if you were 6 at the time diablo 2 came out you can buy Diablo 3 without any problems, as it came out 11 years ago. Also, to combat this theory that the rating will have ANY effect, Call of Duty is rated M and breaks record sales every year.
Record 1: Most expensive Beta Key ever purchased by a desperate SOB.
Record 2: Most Beta Keys ever purchased by desperate SOB's.
Record 3: 1st game company to make more money from the Beta Key black market, than from the game's Day 1 launch.

Call of Duty is also the most popular genre in video games by far. Diablo 3 is the best of its genre, but not that popular of a genre. The difficulty to get the game will prevent a lot of younger people from even trying. Especially if they already have a game they like.
Its only hope is if they play the beta or a demo. The action oriented changes to the game will probably make just about anyone like the game if they try it. I just don't believe anyone is gonna try it until someone recommends it to them. When I was in high school and middle school, very few people I went to school with played Blizzard games. I had to get people into it for them to start. I just don't believe that since it's not as impacting on kids now, as it was in the past. That it gives them a reason to randomly buy it on release day to chance it sucking.
Kids will buy a shooter game in the blink of an eye because they are relatively easy to play and get into. They won't buy a game that someone explains to them is going to need thinking to beat the game. As great as an impact Diablo 3 is gonna have. I just don't see it breaking many records in sales in the beginning. Especially by how many people are complaining about features they dislike about the game. That might cause people to not buy it right away and let their friend buy it instead for an in depth demo.
Basically what games that break records now have that Diablo series doesn't. Is a name with the current gaming youth. It will just be viewed as an old game that used to be popular, rather than a potential buy. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for kids to buy Diablo 3 when it comes out. Unless an older gamer introduces it to them.

Call of Duty has a large body of gamers who absolutely hate it for being well... the most basic shooter game that's recycled with every sequel. But it still manages to acquire an enormous fan base (I really fail to see how - but than again I have a brain). So I wouldn't worry about people being turned off from playing D3 just because people a complaining about what they don't like in it. =)
