And like Duke Nukem...the longer the game takes to be released, the more unrealistic all our expectations become. Granted, I'm sure Diablo 3 won't be nearly as awful as Duke Nukem, but still. This is just what happens when a game takes forever to come out. I've often compared the dilemma of Duke Nukem to D3.
But again, FF XIII was originally planned to be played on the PS2, and then Sony announce the PS3 in 2006 and dev for FF XIII began in 2004, so they also had to adjust the game to accommodate the PS3.
I just don't understand with the ressources that blizz have now we are not able to play this before the end of 2012 Q1. Oh well, what you gonna do...
It's not about having the resources to complete the tasks, it's the lack of direction and proper brainstorming. A team of 5 or 500...it doesn't matter if people can't come up with good ideas that work the first time. A lot of the BS they decided they wanted to take out of the game could have been figured out on a whiteboard in a meeting room before even the first line of code was written.
Not to mention the lack of communication. Bashiok didn't even know we were getting pub chat channels at first.
My money is on poor leadership, not manpower. There's plenty of brain at Blizzard, so we'll eventually get an amazing game, but if their communication and proper planning were actually at a professional level we'd get an amazing game much sooner.
Not long after that Senior Producer left...they starting speeding up by cutting things that didn't make sense for now. I'm not saying Steve Parker is/was the only weak link but at least it was a start.
Diablo 3 was announced before they would even work on their game. How much time do you think a game needs to take in place at first. Blizzard have been working a lot on this game to make sure to not repeat the same error and trying a different gameplay. They did not start working on this game since 2003-04 or something. Since they announced the game way before it let everybodies think it is a super slow progression to be released. But people can't take consideration of this and post forums over and over instead of evaluating.

I thought in an interview they said D3 started developping a little after DII's launch no ?
Nah, Blizz North dev till 2005 and then Blizz took over and started from scratch in '05/'06. Go watch the Retrospect vid: http://us.battle.net...me/anniversary/
But the FF XIII dec is not the same as the D3 one. Blizz scrapped it completely but FF XIII was the same people and only made adjustments.
I would say FFXIV is the longest...2 years after release and its still in development.
Nah, Dukem Nukem it has been like 15 years. Diablo was confirmed only in 2008. But it was speculated in Diablo 2 time.
Duke Nukem was developed for 15 years. Diablo 3 is developed for 12 years at the moment. It probably wont be more, DNF will stay on first place.
Diablo 3 was and has always been two different games, Blizzard North started it, Blizzard Ent. did not like there apporoach and since the company went under anyways, they tossed that disc away, and created Diablo 3 from scratch, with a brand new grapics engine, so essentially Diablo 3 started in 2006, but then got put on the shelf for World of Warcraft: TBC, and then picked up again after Starcraft II was released.
So it hasn't even been in production for more then 2 years honestly, did the delay hurt? yes, it really did, will it affect the outcome? nope...the game will be amazing either way, and I for one and really glad they changed it up...otherwise it just looked like an expansion pack.

Duke Nukem went to multiple developers and had short statuses of hiatus. Blizzard has always been the only developer of D3. Huge difference and IMO makes D3 still the worst culprit (HL Ep. 3 being in second).
World of Warcraft is a much larger game than Diablo (Bashiok said D3 was about the same size as D2) and it took them less time to develop. Like I said, poor communication and leadership. The team they had working on vanilla WoW was much better.

DN was made by two separate dev companies. Likewise, D3 has been made by at least two separate dev teams. Blizz North was a completely different group than those working on it now. Shoot, Blizz North was essentially a completely different company as they were still largely those from Condor. Between many key people leaving Blizz North and then being shut down completely, who knows how many hiatuses and dev teams were involved. Given the turnover, one could easily see three+ completely different teams working on the title.

WoW was created by one team. Poor communication and leadership were not the causes. A series of unfortunate corporate incidents is what caused the long dev time. D3 just happen to get caught up in the middle of it all.

Could you be more specific? The incidents I'm thinking of are poor management, with one finally out the door (Steve Parker) and evidence of development now speeding up. And poor communication (evidence by lack of communication between developers and community managers only serves to not convince me that communication is very good within the dev team).
So, what if it is?
Siaynoq's Playthroughs
I can only assume early D3 development was like 3 blizz employees deciding if Cain would be dead or not.

D3 development started in 2006. It will be 5,5~6 yeasr dev i believe.
