So to my knowledge, when you decide to say leave normal and venture into nightmare, you are not allowed to go back to lower difficulties.
But is this the same for Hell to Inferno? I remember them saying that youll need to farm Hell quite a bit to survive in Inferno. If you cant go back to lower difficulties, then ur basically screwed in Inferno..

And where did you gather this knowledge?
Of course you can go back to lower difficulties, you could in Diablo 2 as well, and you need to farm hell quite a bit according to blizzard to survive in Inferno.
blizzard mentionned many times that the first time through inferno will be really hard and we will have to go back to hell to farm some gear. They also said that you could go help a lower level friend even if you were super high level, even though he will get less xp. That means that you can go back in any difficulties you reached//completed
Also it makes no sense if you have finished normal and find out that you can't play with your friend anymore with this character. Hence, they can't go into nightmare and you can't go back to normal.

mm maybe i read wrong then.. I remember i think it was the bestbuy talk, where there was something about that you can only go back to lower acts of the same difficulty..
i thought it was kinda silly anyways. I probably misread it.. cool! all good!

I only read through half of that Q&A but i am 99.9% sure that you can jump between them freely.
Thanks for reminding me that i should read through the whole thing though, i am quite bored these days, been counting down the hours till the big day.
I think I remember the question you're thinking of...
I think when you go back to a lower level friend's game, say in normal mode act 2, in that game you will not be able to go to act 3 or 4 until your friend is there, since he made the game and has not yet progressed there.
That was my understanding, anyway.

And may the odds be ever in your favour.
