You had pay to win in Diablo 2 as well it was just done on shady sites. It's unavoidable. What would you have them do? At least it will be easier to avoid dupes that ruined D2 and dupes existed cos of offline mode 99% of the time. And if you want to trade, buy/sell it's legal now and with easier access.
Am I happy with it? No, but I accepted that selling items is unavoidable one way or another and since I did accept it I relaxed and my D3 gaming experience is on all time high atm. You should try that.
Once you've seen a guy come into a hardcore game, with a fake item that deals 3 million damage and one-shot ever player in the game, write "lol" and exit the game, your view on this matter is a bit different.
This type of stuff, more than anything else, is why D3 will not have an offline version. And I'm fine with that. If you absolutely positiively must have an offline game, Torchlight 2 is on the way. Just don't pay for D3. If you already did, that's on you, because we've known since Blizzcon 2010 that it was going to be this way.
You had pay to win in Diablo 2 as well it was just done on shady sites.
That is such, such bullshit.
no...its really not. Certainly not for PVE, but the actual real PVP scene that was there ...yes people did. I'm sure you're well aware of FG (Forum Gold) and the various websites that catered expensive rare/crafted/rolled items to people ...who did spend the insane amounts of money.
There was actually a trade on one site in particular where an old jeep grand cherokee was traded for a bugged 1.08 valk helm...
People need to stop bitching about RMAH. Don't use it if you don't want to. The fact is the same people who were buying before are buying now, and Blizzard is getting a cut. WHICH IS A GOOD THING!!! It ensures continued development of the game, both in patches and expansions that may have not been there otherwise. So, imho... STFU WITH THE BITCHING ABOUT THE RMAH, PLAY THE GAME OR DON'T!

Meh I wouldn't say that dupes ruined D2. If anything they helped it. It allowed people who had less time to play acquire the good gear. Hacks and blatant disregard from Blizzard were the only things to hurt D2.
Why does everybody bitch and whine constantly, going over the same shit that has been said a thousand times. Diablo III is fucking amazing, regardless of its flaws and shortcomings. Nobody discusses what Blizzard did right.

What did they do right? What did they do that is worthy of the Diablo franchise name?

This attitude you have is forcing me to reply. D3 is a good AAA game ARPG. Among the best out there currently. It has the potential to be great depending on patches and expansions.
Many might disagree with some design decisions made, but the end result is a fun game and in the spirit of the diablo franchise. No other game since D2 has even come close. They are not perfect, especially since this is a completely new group, new classes, new engine, new design concepts, they have made some mis-steps but nothing that they are not addressing currently.
If you're so narrow minded to even ask "What did they do right" then sadly my opinion of your intelligence and maturity is vastly diminished. Not that in your immaturity would care.
In fact if D3 is such a mess to you, do us all a favor and find another game. Spare us your presence in these forums.

This makes it harder to create fake items ingame and item duping, which is the entire point of the always-online concept. It's about control and security for the playerbase. They still have to nail a few issues, but all in all, it eliminates many of the problems that were a big deal in Diablo 2. Once you've seen a guy come into a hardcore game, with a fake item that deals 3 million damage and one-shot ever player in the game, write "lol" and exit the game, your view on this matter is a bit different.
That's weird, because closed realms seemed to solve this problem fine in Diablo 2. I personally leveled my first character offline, and was completely fine with not being able to join closed realm games, and understood why I could not. If someone wants to cheat in an offline game, how does that hurt me at all?
You had pay to win in Diablo 2 as well it was just done on shady sites.
That is such, such bullshit.
But it was true.
I watched as friends used those sites, or eBay for that matter, to buy gear so they too could have a hammerdin for Power Leveling, a smiter for Ubers and so on... Hell, even I bought gear to pimp out my thrown barb... The only difference between then and now? Now, it's done in house and Blizzard is okay with it.

What did you do to make your opinion matter more than the rest of ours? I think the game is awesome and worthy of Diablo franchise name. It's a lot of fun. That's all it needs to be. Many others share that opinion with me. We don't need to justify to you why it's good, because we could really care less if you play or not.

Are you really insulting someone over opinions? You are essentially saying that the person you quoted is less of a person than you are, because they don't think the way you do. Yet you call them "Narrow Minded"?
Some people love D3 (I am in that group), other people are going to hate it and blame Blizzard for ruining a good franchise. It's fine that we can all argue our points for our side, but to blatently insult a person because of their opinions... especially when those opinions relate to a fucking game...It's ridiculous.
For the record, I don't hate Diablo 3. I am just growing tired of all of the people saying that "Pay-to-Win" is justified because it is the only way they can afford to keep the servers up. This is complete non-sense. How did they keep the servers up for Diablo 2? How do they keep them up for Starcraft 2 as we speak?
Don't for even a second believe that the Real Money Auction House was put there for your protection, and not for Activision's own profits.
As far as having to pay-to-win in Diablo 2 goes? Going to go ahead and disagree with you. I was a teenager who didn't even have a credit card, and I easily beat Hell mode without it even occurring to me that I should be spending real-life money on virtual items.
Unlike Diablo 2, Diablo 3 is not so easily playable without the use of an Auction House. The problem is: this Auction House is now based on real-life currency. Anyone saying this isn't "pay-to-win" is in denial. I officially quit the game today after discovering that my friend who rage quit Inferno during Act 2 just now returned after a 2 week hiatus, spent $30 and he now out gears me despite me having spent a more significant amount of time playing, and even beating Inferno.
Here's a thought, sell your good items on the RMAH, use said real money to buy more items for your character on RMAH. You spend $0.00 and have 2 auction houses at your disposal. These topics are so dumb. They're keeping dupes and hacks out easier because it's online only.
If you don't like it sell all your gear on RMAH, get your money back, and uninstall.
And people saying D2 was pay to win. You obviously never played for any extended period of time. It was so easy to just join a bot game and steal the loot, after a ladder reset if you didn't want to farm up again. I never spent a penny on the game besides the 2 battle chests I purchased. And have multiple characters with elite gear that can farm anything and everything. + Diablo isn't a game you "win" so I fail to see how you can pay to win a game that's 100% about farming loot. You never win, there will always be something to farm for. If you buy it all after 40 hrs of getting your character to 60 then wtf is the point at all.
Why does everybody bitch and whine constantly, going over the same shit that has been said a thousand times. Diablo III is fucking amazing, regardless of its flaws and shortcomings. Nobody discusses what Blizzard did right.

Really, who cares about your opinion of the game? Why should the person you quoted give two shits about what you said? It's funny, the person you quoted made a blanket statement about a studio that made a game, and YOU took it as a personal attack.
This whole idea of "Oh god, someone doesn't like something I like... I should argue with them, belittle them, insult them and break their spirits until they believe as I do." needs to stop. It's okay to have your opinions. It's okay for someone to opose your opionions. It's fine to argue the reasons why your opinions are what they are... What we don't need is the condesending attitude, the belittling and the insulting that seems to go along with the opinions.

While you are right (the microtransactions probably aren't necessary) Comparing SCII to D3 belies your ignorance of the topic, as the only servers Blizzard host are ranking and matchmaking servers, and the entire demand Starcraft II puts on their hardware probably compares roughly to D3's login services alone.
Here's a thought, sell your good items on the RMAH, use said real money to buy more items for your character on RMAH. You spend $0.00 and have 2 auction houses at your disposal. These topics are so dumb. They're keeping dupes and hacks out easier because it's online only.

So your suggestion, now that my gold is worthless, and my ability to farm gold will never compare to these bots, is to try to sell every item I am wearing on the RMAH at a 15% loss, and then hope that I am able to turn around and buy upgrades off the RMAH at a second 15% loss? What happens when I run out of items to pawn? It's not like I can go farm gold efficiently enough to buy items with gold, and flip them on the real money auction house for an actual profit. This would be virtually impossible now that the gold market has been flooded by the farming industry.
Bottom line is: You will never be able to out farm a bot. As gold value continues to decrease it will not be long before buying gold, or spending USD on items is the only method to play this game competitively.

If server costs were such an issue, why didn't they offer an off-line version?
And secondly, how do Starcraft 2 servers still manage to stay afloat without a pay-to-win model of it's own?

Word.

The answer is: the entire Diablo 3 franchise is formed around the pay-to-win system. They don't want you to play offline because they want to pigeon hole players into having to rely on an Auction House that is based on real life currency.
But it was true.
