Well, tonight I discovered why ww/tornado is so popular. After dumping the majority of this week's earnings into tanky upgrades on my barb (breaking 10k armor, 55k hp, and 1k all-resists except poison) the idea of farming act3 seems no more likely. I was able to easily tank many packs or at least whittle them down, but some types were simply too frustrating to bother with. Extra health, fire chains, fast came up more than once so perhaps it was just bad luck.
The overall take-away seemed to be that glass cannon (or at least LoH tanking) is far and away the most effective means of dealing with the later acts. No amount of tank stats can really prevent you from being chain cc'd into fire while between cooldowns.
LoH is really the way to go for melee. I don't see any way around it without a huge headache.
I'm pretty solid when my character is not cc'd due to revenge, ignore pain - ignorance is bliss, and leap or charge. The big issue is that essentially the only time one is safe from some of the more dangerous types of elite is while WOTB is up and status effects are ignored. Hence the bursty builds or perma-wotb builds enjoy a much greater preference.
Of course, if I had the gear to push out another 20-30k dps I would likely be able to destroy packs before wotb fell off anyway, but that's currently way out of my budget. It is also possible i'm missing something (it is late), but i'll have to troubleshoot tomorrow.
Understanding the WW/Sprint build is complicated. There are different "approaches" to it with some saying "go with a slow MH" and others saying "go with a fast MH", bla bla bla.
Personally, I love that build as the most fun I've had in the game, mainly because I love WW, but also because WotB makes me feel like this to the endless bulls of CC from some packs:
(I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules with that... =) )
Also, it gives you the leverage you need for some other moments as well as cool improvements:
- single target CAN HAVE ENDLESS WOTB too, you don't need to WW / Sprint for that
- Sprint makes you reach goblins with easy, no more running away from you
- Sprint also gives you the fast movement need to reposition quickly if needed (too many pools on the floor or the like)
- In A2, you can cover most of Desolate Sands for example just Sprinting and letting white mobs recharge your Fury until you find the next champ pack
- and the most important, you feel like payback time when you just run away and let Sprint's tornados do the job for you while the mob can't touch you.
I'm still low on DPS, 16k with no Battle Rage, 19.5k with it, and 26k with WotB up. But I have a lot of fun.
Problem is, I still farm A2, and simply can't find a good way of having fun in A3. While I can face roll A2 with up to FOUR PACKS together (my latest record) I get stuck with single packs in A3.
Anyway, if you're going for WW / Sprint, here are my top 5 hints:
- Mighty Weapon, the "flow" of fury is more controllable and not so "spiky" as with an Axe, DPS is lower though
- Axe, you might have more Fury control issues here, but DPS is higher
- +12% movement boots are cheap, 250k or so if you get the Sage's, and they do help. In a straight line, that is the difference between dropping 4 tornados without it or 5 with it.
- 40% critical chance or more is a must have, based on Axe. If you're going with Mighty Weapon, 30%+ will do.
- The faster you hit, the more procs of LoH and Battle Rage you might have. Also counts for Mighty Weapon's Fury in each hit. "Oh, but Maces will do more damage!" yes, per hit, but over time, Axes and Mighty Weapons will hit more times, doing less damage per hit but more often, and thus in my opinion, being the best approach to the build. Dagger for Off-hand is a must.
What weapons are you using Proletaria? I know I made the mistake later on of thinking "Oh this weapon has 850dps so it must be better than this 550-600dps weapon. Wrong. I got two nice socketed 600~ dps weapons with plenty of dex, vit, and a socket for crit hit gems and that upped my dps by a ridiculous amount. Don't underestimate the power of good stats and a socket.
800ish dps str/vit axe with a socket (70% Crit dmg) I found. Haven't spent any gold on weapons because the jump from side-grade to upgrade is a difference of about 20mil.
Not really a huge fan of the ww/tornado stuff, so I think my barb is going to be on break a while. Perhaps my wizard can make better use of his gold (if the equipment I put up will ever sell :shakefist:).
95% of people are happy with Diablo III and are in-game and playing.
5% of people are unhappy with Diablo III and are here at the forums and complaining.
When something works for you, you enjoy it. When it doesn't, you whine about it. That sums up the situation.
95% are happy? i am guessing 100% of your statistics are made up. Because that is not what is going on. Blizzard is letting a lot of glitches slip through their hands and it is ruining the game. I would say a good chuck of the fan base has quit and is waiting for the pvp patch or are just done for good.
Do you use frenzy? You could probably just frenzy/loh kill everything.
I do use frenzy, but I don't have any LoH. The most I could get at the moment would be a hundred or so on rings/amulet and i'd loose dps since that's currently where I get most of my crit.
Also, I meant the socket has a 70% crit dmg gem in it, not that it has both. Although I wish it was.
Yeah I ended up getting 400-500 loh on each weapon also. The stuff that is 600~ dps is so much cheaper and it really makes up for it sometimes.I assume you're also looking for crit on your shield, bracers, gloves, rings, amulets, helmet, wherever else you can get it as well as crit hit dmg?
Yeah, every slot has crit that can have it except bracers, on ring, and amulet. Price is a little too high to get crit and crit dmg on the latter and for some reason I just never got a good deal on bracers.
I would loose a pretty hefty chunk of dps going down to a 600 weapon, unless it had crit dmg in high amounts to accompany the LoH.

A high strength value could make up for low dps!
As for an update the barb is on the shelf for now, did a few quests in hell and he does hit hard enough with the two hander I have so.... until I buy something else I'm going to leave him.
Been busting out the wizard for awhile and had a lightning paralyze build, it worked really well but I took to much damage. I then switched to a tanky cold build but I had no range so that was getting too annoying. Currently rocking an arcane build and everything is faceroll now. I'm hoping it will carry me into hell mode but we'll see. I'm sitting at 47 right now.
Damn, that's where you were? Glad you're back! I've always wondered when a user disappears if they died or not.

Sometimes I wonder if they died or not and hope they didn't, othertimes it's the other way around. -.-

That's one shitty thing about the internet. That is also why in this day and age you should have a will, that includes the sites/games you frequent, with account & password. And a message for your loved one (parent, spouse, child, best friend) to send to everyone you used to associate with.

At the risk of sounding like Stewie Griffin, you will rue the day! Rue, I say!
Daemaro! He's lying! I totally was talking on page three and was in no way on a vacation from Dfans!
And don't look into my history of the scouts or lack thereof, I swear I was in it, scouts honor!

Overpower + Crushing Advance is a great way to overcome a few issues in without WotB.
Since each reflected damage is considered a hit from you, it will proc LoH.
In other words, you can SIT on desecration and when you use Overpower you'll GAIN health. Given your LoH is not that bad, o'course.

I won't be playing my WD till my shoulder is better I need two hands for that mode of playing. Sad I was progressing in act 2.
