I didn't view the link, so I apologize if this has been addressed. I won't miss trials per se, but a lot of times like at the start of a new season, I tank trials on purpose to farm lower level ones to gear up. Like right now, I haven't had the chance to play much, and GR 26 is where I'm at. So what I do is get far enough in the trials to start at like 18, buzz through it for gear, get an upgraded 24 or 25 key, then do the progression thing all over again to skill up my gems when I can't go further.
I guess my TL;DR is that I hope they will have something in place to farm lower GRs than your max capability, because I do not care to always do T6 runs for hopes to gear up.
99% of the community: Yeah! At last! (btw how come that removing trials from the game is so much more exciting than devs adding something to it?)
Let's call it addition through subtraction.
But now whenever you start a greater rift it will start from lv1 and only advance one level at a time. We think this solution will help the system judge the player skills in a better way and also appreciate the skill needed to advance to higher levels.'
community: Wait what.
That's not going to happen. They seem to understand the redundant and ridiculous nature of having to qualify to enter a tier that we've already beaten. My guess is that they're going to have a system that allows you to advance to the next tier, as well as have a chance of upgrading your gem. Trying to do one or the other was a key mistake that few people seem to talk about.
Maybe for 2.3? I think they said perma fear wasn´t gonna make it for 2.2 but for next patch.
In the OP link, they discuss perma-CC and there wishes to remove it. Other great info from the OP vid is regarding them aggressively lowering enemy damage on higher grifts to coincide with the loss of perma-CC (support builds in general).

Ye, I know, just kidding. But I really wonder what type of system they want to implement.
