I want a full power merc! But you can set it so they can only use 2 skills at once. (you get to switch skills for them to use on the fly). While you have a whole bar of skill to clik and choose in combat.
i very much like this idea!
how bout you spec them in their normal tree, and use like a separate set of macros to use their abilities. however, they would have to have a pretty low damage rate, and certain skills would be taken away.

"I'd rather chop off my ding-dong than admit that booze ain't food!"
Obviously they wouldn't have all there skills, but say you could hire a build of an old class such as "skelemance for hire" "poison necro for hire" kinda deal, different variations of the class, kinda like D2 mercs.
Not too far fetched given that you could hire the Diablo 1 rogue as a merc in D2.
Oh! What if some of the mercs were the actual characters from Diablo 2... The Druid and Necromancer are out, they wouldnt do that for the money. Doubt the sorceress either. I could see the Paladin, the Amazon, and maybe the Assassin though...
Then again, Blizzard loves its Paladins, so Paladin will probably be a playable class... *Eye roll.*
(Side note: The A1 merc is not the rouge from D1, the D1 rouge is Blood Raven. The A1 merc is one of the sisters of the sightless eye that didn't fall or sway to Andariel.)
While some classes wouldn't hire themselves out for money, they would if there's a series of quest you have to do to gain their help on your quests.
I want to have all the character classes from the previous games to come back as mercs. And make them to have no summon, but give them their other offensive skill. Allow them to have full set of armor, with their own inventory, but unlike Player, they can only equipt certain type of weapon (limit them so that they can't play for you.)
Example would be: Paladin can only equip Targe and sword/hammer/mace and the rest of the item (1 ring, 1 amulet, 1 belt for their own potion, boot and guantlet)
Same for Sorc, but instead of Targe and sword, they can only equipt staffs or orb (make the orb look like actual floating glowing orb this time, lol).
Barb: no shield, just 1 2handed weapon or 2 weapons.

ect!!!
I think that a targe is kinda pushing it, maybe a shield and a scepter for the Paladin.
I also think that Necro's and Druid's involvement would depend on the story line. If Hell is really invading then yes, the Necros and Druids would be mercs, but if it's more akin to Diablo 1's story line, or even a little lighter then Diablo 2's, I can't see Necro's and Druid's involving themselves much. Heaven seems to be gaining too much power as is, and I don't see them fighting for the overpowered side. (And lets face it, your going to be fighting for Heaven, because if you fought for Hell, the IRL Churches of our world would be up in arms.)
Not for hell, but for balance. If the speculation of Imperiex turn out to be true that is.
If you have to get them through series of quest (storyline), then you can only get them from certain act (exclude hell and nightmare diff if you bring them over, obviously). So, if the story unfold and require certain class, for example the Necro, to take action, then you can then hire them, ect.
Also, as someone already mention, I like to see them have upgrade look depend on armor they wear too.
In D2, it look weird to have a plain garb rogue in Act4, lol.
I think that a targe is kinda pushing it, maybe a shield and a scepter for the Paladin.
Not really since as a mercenary he would have a diminished number of skills and their damage would also be altered.
You can give the barbarian mercenary a Fanged Helm or an Avenger Guard. Even if he cannot use some of the skills it grants say Battle Orders or Whirlwind. His skills will only get increase if it a) adds to all barbarian skills or adds to the exact skills he has, which were bash and stun.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
I like the idea of customizing your merc stats when lvling but as for using all items Thats too much. Like some one pointed out, Useing all items will make the merc too powerfull. As for merc dieing i think they should do these 2 things.
#1 customize stats on merc when lvling them.
#2 Have commands for merc so they can stay alive example. you could tell them to be more offensive then they will atttack till they die. or be defensive and not attack as much and run more when getting dmged.
Perhaps not all items, but the necessary ones should be equiptable for them.
And I mean things like helmet, weapon/shield, and belt = they should carry their own potions!!! And when they finally run out, they would shout = I need more mana potion, or health potion, or...whatever.
i think mercenarys should be able to use ALL equipment. rings boots gloves ammy belt wep armor helm everything. and have a small inventory. like 1/4 the size of your inventory. so that he can use charms such as gheeds and anni (obviously not a torch because thats class specified) but then mercs would be more useful because we could jack their resistance up and their abilities alot more. i know alot of people that hate mercs cuz they cost alot and die to much......im hoping to change that. tell me wut u think
With a mercenary in D2, you can have a Summoner necromancer do up to 65K Damage.
You do not need all that crap.

They were a unique touch In D3 I thought.
If so
what would you like changed
about them?

To OP i hope they get rid of charms.. stupid idea to fill up your whole inventory.
