I feel pay per month would destroy the diablo series :(. Wow was fun, but it didn't last. I have a life and I can't devote my life to a game. Also, I don't have money trees growing in the backyard and I can't pay monthly. I'm not sure Blizz can make D3 follow in the same foot steps D2 did. I believe D2's climax was probably after 1.10 when all users were using d2jsp and maphack. It was nice to come home to items and character being leveled up. Maybe Blizz can incorporate a feature into the game like that so for some of us that can't give our life to a game can still have some fun. Blizz will certainly have to becareful how they make it in order to pull in more players, but I wouldn't doubt it will be p2p. That would be a shame. If this is hard to read, it is because it is 3am here and I'm having a hard time focusing and thinking.
that's the very point that I like to make when talking about Diablo progressing instead of regressing. Diablo 2 is a fun game, I love the story, item system, playing it, reading about it, everything... but the problem is that a lot of the attention it gets (and holds) from people is because it has always had 3rd party programs. d2jsp is a prime example because after you couldn't use d2jsp anymore, i know tons of people who wouldn't even level new characters anymore, because it's such a repetitive process in diablo 2, a contributing factor to the reason why it lasted is because in 1.09 you could level to 99 ezmode with cows, 1.10 d2jsp.... 1.11 diablo 2 is very much dying. also in 1.09 everyone had hacked items, 1.10 and 1.10 most people have wizzies, sloops, and other name dupes brought in from open. In other words, everyone loved the game when it had ways that made extremely annoying and tedious tasks easier (i.e lvling to 95+ or finding exceptable ring or ammy stats to go with your char build) I'm not exactly sure how Blizzard feels about Diablo II right now, but if I were them I wouldn't be too happy that one of my games has had numerous hacks implemented into the game, much less that that's one of the main things that a lot of the players like. Diablo was and is a great game, but the online portion of both Diablo I and II have twice been thoroughly corrupted by 3rd party programs, so I think that they might try a game where they can give it a longer life, maybe an MMO maybe not, because personally I don't think Diablo II LOD would've lasted nearly as long as it did if there wouldn't have been 3rd party programs.
new next gen mmorpg in the works.
diablo 3 will stay true to diablo 1 and diablo 2, ftp, battle.net
wow is still huge, they number of people they have had playing is still going up, i remember when they advertised 8 million, now their at 10. so people still joining/making new accounts.
even if they stopped making a game for 100 years, the amount of money they have made form wow is enough to keep their company afloat.
even if they had no use for their servers (which they do) they could sell it.
This is my input...I have been playing Diablo since D1...I was about 9 or 10...Diablo II is by far the only game I have played for more than 2 years non-stop and never got bored...I have no idea how...I am a lvl 70 Shadow Priest in WoW and I got bored of that game...evern w/ the huge land and endless things to do...I would say because its alot of walking..Diablo II had everything I wanted in a game. Even after it was out dated and the graphics whernt the best...It was non-stop action w/ all kinda of people...More social in its own way...and the PvP and gear was so much fun to get and the Trade system...was amazing...WoW didnt have all that...sure the PvP in WoW is fun...but you always get teamed up on and its never a full 1on1 most of the time, but Ill admit...when WoW came out I was more pissed then anything...I was thinking omg they make Warcraft into the best game to date and not Diablo...Diablo is 10x the Game warcraft was...but thats all behind me becuz still to this day I know Diablo II still took the cake of beaing the best online game yet...and I just got the news about D3 today...and I cant say how pumped i am...MMO, p2p...whatever...its Diablo...and after what Blizzard did to WoW...I can only think...This game is about to kick alot of ass...and if they can get a sick PvP system in...maybe servers a bit bigger then D2...not by much...and get alot of classes and races...this game will be my new Online game.... World of Warcraft was in Major League Gaming (MLG) w/ is the biggest gaming tournament ever...and its set so u pick a char u didnt even make ( test server ) and u play 3v3 Arena...the PvP in wow is sick but its never fair if u ask me...I quit D2 to play Halo for the compatative aspect...and I hope D3 can bring some amazing in game compottion..
I refuse to pay to play any game once I've bought it. Simply put play-2-pay means I won't be buying the game. Also why ruin a good thing? Lets keep WoW as the Blizzard MMO and leave Diablo to be a small group quest based game.
Oh my! Now this is a thread to behold. Did you do this research yourself, make it up, or is it all just hearsay among you and yours? WoW is far from dying. One of my top friends on MySpace has a video where he talks about being a spokesperson for WoW. His name is William Shatner - someone I've admired for many years. I'm fairly certain that his word alone could influence someone, somewhere to at least try the game. I have no doubts that as long as Blizzard is making a fair profit from WoW, they will continue to support it even after any said five years. Only a fool would poison his own wells.
I play several different games. I have an account with Sony's Station.com. I enjoy playing EverQuest. I pay $15/mo for the account and I don't have to worry about losing my characters if I don't log in within a certain amount of time. If I wanted, I could pay $30/mo for a station pass and have access to all their games - mostly ferrett free. There are always amenities to a subscription account. One of the best I can think of is that people tend to take better care of those things that they have paid for. I also have Ascheron's Call, though I let the account expire after my husband expired. I paid for the game, then I paid for the service. I did get a reprieve on the cost of the game in free months of initial playing time with both Ascheron's Call and EverQuest.
The problems with the Diablo II servers had nothing to do with Blizzard or bnet. It was the general population of D2 players that was the problem. People bitched and moaned about the length of time it took for the technicians to have the servers running properly after a major bout with server instability. No one ever stopped to think about the mulititudes of hacks and bots that these people had to deal with ALL THE TIME. People were creating hacks that would steal other people's items - and people were using them. A lot of people were using them. Open games became a real problem. We always liked our games open so someone who needed help could drop in and ask for it. That became impossible because some dork with a power-leveled 99 character, that they'd had for two weeks and was dying to test, would drop into your game, screw it up, or screw you up, then exit. I played primarily with a guy from Hawaii, one from Michigan, one from Seattle, a couple from the east coast, a cat in Germany, and a chick in England. We were all in our 30s and 40s. They others trickled away from bnet because of all the bullshit, not from Blizzard, but from the other game players' ostensible behavior, as well as all the hacks and bots that kept it screwed up. It got to the point that it was impossible to have fun. The servers were down half the time from all the hacking. Then there was the bot that used a teleporting sorceress with good mf to attack the entryway to Nilathak's Temple, over and over and over. It ate so much resource that you couldn't play a game and the servers would go berserk because so many of the bots would be running simultaneously. The people I had played D2 with went to EverQuest, which is how I ended up there. It was sad. What's worse is that everyone blamed the kids. It wasn't always the kids. Sometimes the adults were more despicable than any of the kids I met. And because of all this, I would be more than happy to pay a monthly fee for a secured server. Is it really any wonder that it has taken so long for them to cater to Diablo fans? I would be rather disgruntled myself.
And why is it so foolish to entertain the idea of a completely different MMORPG at the same time that WoW is running strong? WoW was started back when I was migrating to Sony; so it's been around a while already - four years or so, I think. Sony caters to at least 4 EverQuest titles, and 5 other titles - including Star Wars Galaxies - and it's not hurting them. The games don't really seem to be in competition with each other either. Sony also keeps their EQ PVP players on their own servers, separate from the regular RP groups.
I think the Diablo theme would make a fascinating MMORPG without taking away from the magic or fun of Diablo. You could still hold to the theme. Some things, though, would have to change. In particular the zone setup, monster respawning, and items dropping on the ground (a major resource pig) to name some major ones. Why can't everyone be on the same world? It provides for much more interaction between players, makes help easier to find, and provides for much greater expansion. Heaven and hell, or rather good and evil, can be found anywhere.
the smart thing to do would be leave WoW as the MMORPG, and make D3 free to play after the initial purchase, i mean think about it 50-60$ x how many copies are sold should be more than enough to keep it up an running, ppl are still buying the diablo battlechest to date
reason i say this is while the ppl that have the extra money burning a hole in their pocket can pay to play WoW, the less well off people, who either cant afford WoW, or get bored of it very quickly (i fit into both of those, i tried the demo an got bored of it within the first few hours, but ive never been bored of d2, and never used a hack or anything like that either, since i cant afford to replace my diablo 2 cd key) can get diablo 3, that way they are playing to both markets and getting the most out of both investments, because im sure there are alot of ppl who have enough to buy wow, but dont have enough to constantly pay every month to play it (reguardless of any lame 3 month free that comes with it or whatever it is, you end up paying way more than the cost of the game by the time you get 4 years out right? so that argument is invalid)
so that all being said, if D3 is like D2, ill buy it, if its like WoW, i wont an ill just stick to D2
Stop responding here, it's a necroed thread. It's also obsolete, since we already know Diablo III is not an MMO and we're not sure of its PVP functions.

Yes i'm sure that WoW with 9-10 subscribers is dying fast, i stoped playing the game in feb this year, when i left the player base was still growing not decreasing, and the new expansion is out soon which will keep the game alive for quite some time, to the OP.... your post was a waste of space in my opinion, if you gonna start writing a serious post at least use facts in the start, cause you just made up facts to downplay wow, i don't stand wow anymore my self but clearly there are close to 10mil people that do.
I hope it isn't, I would like to play with others but paying a monthly fee is to much when you just paid for a 60 dollar game and then are forced to pay 20 dollars more play that then you have the internet to pay for it's a big fuck job. And with the gas prices they way they are now some people that had extra money to play MMOs' don't have that extra money to play anymore. I am planing to buy D3, but if they do make us pay to play a game I just bought I'm not going to buy it. I would happily buy extra content but I'm not paying to play a game I just bought.
Heres the facts, Blizzard has made an incredible ammount of money from WoW yet as one person said about BC has totally corresponded with my theory. WoW is dieing, and quickly. BC is blizzards way of beating a dead horse and still getting the blind kids to pay for rides around the bail of hay. Therefore WoW will not completely die (as diablo 2, starcraft 2, ECT { People think being oldschool makes them badass at school or whatever [sometimes it does]})
But what will blizzard ever do with their many, many servers?!? I am sure they will leave some for WoW but when the cost of the servers per month rises more than the income per month from WoW something will (not surprisingly) appear. We all know Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 WILL be coming out. Its not a myth and people who think otherwise (such as negating proof "THAT DOESNT MEAN ANYTHING RAWR") will just look over their shoulder and hope no one was listening. The rumors or leaks of Diablo 3, such as Heaven vs Hell with guild housing ect lead me to believe that there is no way this can be a 8 player click 2 button-fest. It will be strategic PVP most likley because...
The current projects Blizzard is trying to accomplish is World PVP ( Heaven VS Hell ??????)
Why wouldn't Blizzard let us know! Because anything that takes away from WoW is a sin at this point in the game. They still want money to make their future products completely take the market.
Is this any proof that Diablo 3 will be a pay per month mmorpg? In my eyes, no doubt. They have done it once with a rts... why not do it with an actual rpg? The success of WoW is only miniscule to what Diablo 3 could be and Blizzard knows it. Diablo 2 sold more copies than Paris Hiltons sex tape. Thats alot of Diablo 2s!
Now the problem... Will this be a 'Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me'? I hope not, but the way Warcraft lore was completely destroyed and the repetitivness of right clicking and using the same spells (like diablo 2) the same thing could happen to Diablo 3.
How do we fix this... You keep posting on this site ideas and what you want because i can promise you they read sites like this to see what fans think because they want to please you... not themselves... Blizzard loves you... so even if Diablo 3 turns into another WoW... it wont make Starcraft 2 any less special... And if it does... Blizzard will turn into some kind of EA games (who has game diarrhea constantly spewing crap in the form of games) and I do not want that because I have been playing Blizzard games since Warcraft 1... I sucked because I was like 10 but I loved the game. Do we not want our 10 year olds to love Blizzard too? That is why we must keep writing and keep posting ideas good and bad... Radiohead kicks ass...
Please post any comments (positive or otherwise) about what I have said. Feedback = <3 from waddlez!

Im sorry, but if Blizzard makes it a monthly fee to play D3, i personally will not do it. Like i said in another post, i am going to be a college student, so money will be needed elsewhere, and i think that the $50+ bucks i spend on D3, plus who knows how much for expansions.... Will be enough to keep Blizzard happy. They are already filthy rich, and if they charge people that much just to get on a play a video game, i think that will just be greedy, and i will not pay to play it. I think that is ridiculous. That's my opinion....
