Personally i think it should keap its look but get elderscrolls skill system. If you haven't played elder scroll Oblivion than u should now that it skill system is based the mor u use the skill the higher and faster that skill lvls.
While some of the skill lvlen in Elders scroll is rediclulous like Enlyth said the part about the more u where to jump up on a wall the higher u can jump later is pretty cool. I know this because im in the dark botherhood guild on the game and i assissinate people from a good distance with my bow.
Id say an enhance d2. More like 2.75d if it makes sense. A little more open world like. Less travel constraints. Ability to rotate veiw. use of wasd for movement. me personally, I cant stand the click to move. I alway overshoot and move character into harms way. its cause for multiple deaths.
id like to see actual hills and plains, walkin through water and lakes. less copy and change colors on creatures, more different ones. your guy should be able to jump into fatal trouble, ie a cliff or water too deep. anyway gonna go play d2.
What i think there should multiple merc hires. You can add a few more rogues when you have a barbarian merc fighting. That would be nice to have, especially when my dumb merc gets surrounded by death lords and dies.

Those whom have taken in the wicked, shall be punished by thy Lord.
Those whom have trechered into the dark, shall be smited by thy Light.
Maybe the reason you like Oblivion are the graphics that some call overly amazing, but other than that I did not find anything amusing about the game. The Oblivion skill system sucks big time. I mean, level up your sneaking skill by walking into a wall beside a sleeping person? Or cast a spell one hundred thousand times to gain different skill levels? That just leads to macroing, a thing we do not want in D3.
have u no honor! I play oblivion by a strict code and that is what the game is all about..notice in every tes game u start in prison with no knowledge of how u got there or anything that led to u being thrown in prison...They leave the game open for a huge back story thought of by u the player.. My wood elf bow assasin is not allowed to use potions ...why because he doesnt like the taste..Yea it makes the game harder but much much more enjoyable.....my axe wielding orge goes to the bar every other night hes in a town gets drunk and picks fights with the locals.(fist only) untill the guards come and put me in lock up for the night whether im in a quest or not. My vampire char only feeds on other vampires to rejuvinate my blood.. why because he heard a rumor that humans sleep with garlic
Try setting some fun back stories up and go from there
Yes like u said i could leave it on auto run and have my char constantly run in place while i sleep over night to awake and see he has improved 10 skill levals in running and athletics...BUt i dont where would be the fun in that?
U cant really believe the creators of the game said" Hey if they cheat it will be more fun"
try not cheating and play with honor then we will see who enjoys tes oblivion

Someone once posted on this site that he would like to have seen D3 comparable to Elder Scrolls in the same respects as creating the magic in Elder Scrolls.
I agree. I believe that the character classes should each have their own unique skill sets like D2, yet are able to combine their learned skills to form new skills/magic. Although how they are to accomplish this, would be very difficult to say.
learning a skill by using it (as in Elder Scrolls series) has been used by a Diablo clone (Dungeon Siege) and failed. It made it too simple, without real challenge and character planning. The good old skill-tree system is awesome. Just a bit refined, with some respec options (not everyone gets the build right from the first time) and it should serve its cause.
