Side Quests are good! Leveling up would definitely be easier as one of these guys said.. And I'd really enjoy sidetracking from major quests. Besides, I don't want the D3 experience to end so easily. I trust Blizzard with this and I know they know what to do to make the game more KICK-ASS than ever before... Love Blizzard!!

One of the essential features of the RPG genre is the flexibility and somewhat non-linear nature of quests. Simply put, there are usually a multitude of side quests and and optional, well-rewarded quests to keep the game open-ended, repeatable, and not dull.
This was one thing promised in Diablo 2 that I didn't really feel was there. While repeatable, every game was pretty much linear - you followed all the predetermined quests in order. The only "side" quests that were optional (for example, the imbue and socket quests) were very few in number. So I feel like Diablo thus far has favored more action/adventure style gameplay with RPG elements added.
So all that to say I'd like to see more side and optional quests. Randomly generated would be even better. And as I understand it, there will be class-specific quests also. The best kind of RPG, in my opinion, meshes the linear, fixed, and central story line with truly unique and unlimited experiences. I think the thing that saved Diablo 2 was all the character-building and looting system - in other words, people kept playing because they wanted to make their character better (and who doesn't?). I feel that the flavor of the game would be completed with that more open-ended approach to questing - not neglecting the central story, but providing a multitude of experiences for players along the way. True, Diablo is not a full-fledged RPG, but I believe that it had favored action/adventure more than RPG. Just my thoughts and wishes.
What do you think? Will they deliver on the promise of replayability this time? Or do you disagree and think Diablo is not meant to be so open-ended? Your thoughts.
As long as there are no "kill ten zombies and return to me for a paltry reward" quests.
I wouldn't mind one of those as a joke.
But yeah those kinds of quests get old pretty quick. Especially later on. There is one in WoW in the Barrens that's like kill 50 of these boar things and come back! I never do it. It gets boring.
Then you have the, kill as many of these monsters as possible to get one drop and bring that item to me. That gets annoying also. If you played Horde you know how the Quest in Hillsbrad Foothills goes with Heculars Rod or whatever, you kill yetis for about 1-2 hours usually for one item.
I hope that there is an abundance of quests and side-story lines. With Blizzards creation of WoW I think there is some expectation to keep alot of quests and variances to the playing style. D2 was very structured and you were forced on a particular path but that suited the games of that time and was what most people expected. I think D3 will be completley different in its approach.
PS: I really like the idea of random quests and events happening which keep the game different every time.
Wasn't every quest in WOW a side quest save for a few end game raid bosses.
Every second quest is kill x number of y or collect x number of x (by killing x number of y).
You want side quests you go play Baldur's Gate II. That had some of the most amazing and most assuringly non boring side quests I have ever seen. Infiltrating cultist oraganisations and killing leaders (and god), playing both side against each other in a turf war between rival thief guilds (one of whom is run by vampires), slaying a bunch of ogres who turned out to be knights then fighting the evil man who gave you the quest who is actually a dragon with a grudge against your foster father (who was murdered by your brother 4 years earlier), rescuing a group of circus performers from a evil spiteful illusionist (gnomish) mage, stumbling across talking swords hidden in sewers, freeing an entire pit fighting ring of barbarian slaves from their cruel brutal tyrannical masters the list goes on.
But no goddamn "oi you, go get me 12 snozberries from snigglesnouches", followed closely by "go kill 7 evil things and 7 more evil things and 7 eviler things and 7 even more eviler things".
Even D1 and D2 had better side quests than that.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

B...b...but then who will ever get those Snigglesnouches to hand over the snozberries!?
Also, the infamous "Get piece A, kill boss for piece B, put them together in slot C to fight boss for item D"
I mean, if it's just "Go here, kill things, maybe some specific thing, come back, receive loot" that's fine by me. In fact, weren't almost all quests in D1 and D2 that same type?
LOL who are the 10 caveman that voted " No " for side quests, maybe they were just being funny, I don't know. But I can't think of an Action RPG in the history of Pee Wee Herman that has not included Side Quests. Those are a major part of a game as minor as they might seem, and are a good means to gain experience points, bonus skill points, and bonus attribute points. Side Quests also extend the games length a good portion, and helps you immerse yourself within that area your are in better. Without Side Quests, Diablo 3 would be go to point A to point B then to Point C so on, with no inbetween.
I can't imagine why people don't want some side quests though. Side quests aren't mandatory, that's why they're side quests.
The whole side quest experience has been soured for me I suppose. Too involved and it should just be a real quest, part of the story. Not involved enough and it's boring/silly. Like go from point A to point B, kill xx yy in zzland, etc. I didn't much care about Diablo pve though.

Random events make this even more promising.

Lame.
Yeah I could definitely go without those quests

What about "kill the ten zombies of zakumbambuvad"

They do not advance the lore, and if they do they must be available to all characters and not random.
Otherwise, please add as many flavor sides quests as possible, and make them as random as possible for replayability.
