"Every game needs a non-magical class who relies on brute strength and physical prowess. Someone who doesn't need magic and gets to ridicule those who do.
The Barbarian in D3 seems to be quite magical however. The visuals of his special attacks look more like spells. While some visual representation is needed to know what's going on, things like axes magically turning into a big hammer, as can be seen in the gameplay video, are simply too much.
I think we need one class that you can play without getting the feeling that you are using magic. I can understand why game developers get carried away with visual effects - but sometimes less is more."
Answer Bashiok: I don't get that feeling while playing one. I think the Hammer of the Ancients ability is definitely magical to some extent, he's effectively summoning a giant hammer to smash an enemy.
I kind of fill in my own blanks as to where it's coming from and it feels very natural to me and the Barbarian "kit". I kind of see it as - and like the idea of - the barbarian ... I guess drawing upon the power of his ancestors. It feels very Norse, very mythological, and somehow tied to a family bloodline of great and powerful warriors. Summoning the power of a giant hammer? Hell yeah! If a barb is going to do anything magical, it's going to be so he can use a big ass ethereal hammer.
Yeah well Blizzard are now obsessed with overdone "fancy" graphics, Though I have to wonder, if the Barb is that flashy what sort of Disco DJ will a true magic class become, like a roaming mobile fireworks display no doubt.

Yes. These skills are way too exciting and interesting to watch. It's bullshit. IF BLIZZARD DOESN'T MAKE THE GAME MORE BORING I'M GONNA
wait. What?
Seriously guys. It's tough to make a skill look interesting if it's purely physical. It gets boring, and there will be tons of overlap with different skills (fury, zeal, frenzy, double swing...need I continue?)

It's not tough, as proved by the 9 million fighting and action games in existence.
Berserk? Stun? Woop dee doo. Give me something that looks like I can take shit on rather than boring single target attacks. Even the shouts where nothing impressive. I want my skills too look badass and a giant ethreal hammer does just that.
Leap Attack got an overhaul that makes it completely badass
Whirlwind is the same, cool as ever.
Hammer of the ancients... I agree with Bashiok on this one.
Skills like these make the barbarian look... fun. If it had skills similar to D2 I doubt I would play the barbarian at all when the other classes have such fun skills to use. Ice Orb or Berserk? For me it was always Ice Orb. I like things over the top and amazing.
Notice how all the D2 clones getting boring extremely quickly. I stopped playing a warfare class on TQ when I found out the dream mastery LOOKED amazing. I don't give a crap that a skill set like that did not fit into mythology at all, but it was funner than hell.

very true. the d2 barbs skills were really boring. 1 full skill tree were just boosts ( war crys, and enhancing damage with certain kinda of weapons. Masterys or somthing)
You guys are rediculous... seriously, you let your pseudo machoism get to your head, anything that isn't grey, black or brown, is gay and wow/pokemon/hello kitty adventure.... You bitch about lack of single target attacks... probably the most useless and boring thing possible in a hackNslash....
NOW your bitching because the graphics of the barbarians attacks are too flashy... Give me a break. The screen shakes, items break, the ground cracks, body parts go flying..... A GIANT HAMMER SLAMS A MONSTER INTO THE PAVEMENT... and this is too "soft" too "teen" too "gay" for you guys? Well too bad, go play something else.
I know, why doesn't blizzard just remake Doom 3, except instead of guns just use an axe, and all attacks just show the same animation of a little red "slash" and some blood splats out... All single target attacks. That'll be REAL fun. I can't wait.
One full tree of passive buffs, one full tree of shouts, one tree with half the attacks being single target... the barbarian had two interesting abilities Leap Attack... and Whirlwind...
I made one barb, and he wasn't very entertaining.

But those games aren't 3rd person, hack n' slash, mouse killer, games.
Well, they did upgrade to a 3d engine, and one of the awesome things about a 3d engine is how easy it is to use full range of body motion. If such-and-such skill used a certain flashy attack, like say spinning and slashing really fast for instance, it's easier to show that with the engine they have now than it would have been with sprites.

Let me rephrase, its tough to make attacks that don't get old the [insert large number here]th time you use them.
I think most of you are missing the big picture here.
Imagine 8 people in a game casting over the top colorful spells and abilities. Over exaggerated lightning effects combined with complex colors plus 8ppl in the mix does not sound good to me.

The barbarian looks exciting to me remind me of God of War but scaled down.
god of war had amazing attacks. I like to think of the barbarian as Kratos but older and fatter.:offtopic:

Yeah but God of War was kind of overdone for me, not to say it still wasn't a great game though.
It was just once you started attacking you were a whirlwind of flaming blades on chains.
So the barbarian in D3 seems kind of a happy medium.
