ExoditeTyr made a very good point in stating that there should be a balance in supply and demand with gold. I really do think that gold should be worth something, because it was basically pointless in Diablo Two once you get to a higher level. At the same time, I think that there should not be too much of an emphasis on gold because that would make it a central focus of the game (and personally, if I wanted gold to be a focus then I can play some games that already do that). It would be cool if the vendors in-town actually HAD some armor or weapons that is worth it to spend gold on. In the end, it's up to Blizzard to make the decision, so please make the right one!
Comming to think about it now... in the end your always gonna want the best stuff in game and that will usually never be able to be bought... so i dont really know what the use of gold will be cuz it will end up people just some how trying to acuire the best stuff by farming it or trading for it... which thank to god will be possible and is a HUGE difference between D3 and WoW which has been confirmed that items will not be binded to your char if you pick up or wear them... meaning you can use an item and still be able to trade it which makes room for more things to be traded... which at the same point puts and advantage and disadvantage... the advantage is if you have money it becomes really easy to aquire the best items in the game.. the disadvantage is that you never really have to find them yourself lol and makes having it less special

"Always respect the purity of battle. For only in the heart of combat are all pretenses of nobility and quality stripped away, replaced by survival and death."
Which one i presented two lol... the issue of if its binded then you actually have to find it... and then it cannot be traded... the other one is if its not binded then it can be traded but then takes away from the uniqueness of the item... "HEY LOOK AT ME I HAVE THIS REALLY REALLY REALLY UNIQUE ITEM!!! o rly what is it??? ITS CALLED A STONE OF JORDAN! o everyone has that... why call it a unique item if its not really that Unique lol

Lets have a short recap of what D2 economics were;
-Gold had no value;
Good or Bad? I personally find this good. Trading in items vs items
is what i defenetly favour. I enjoy this more becouse i can trade all
my new findings for gear i'll need. Granted, it might take me longer.
But its defenetly more fun finding people offering items at a bargain.
-Currency;
Highrunes, Runewords, Uniques, Jewels, Chars etc. etc. you get the point.
There was no real currency in D2. Though, some sites used this and got
"forumgold" which worked quite well. But becouse its used outside the
game, its really fraudsensative. The closed currenty D2 has are highrunes.
When 1.10 hit, i remember having my whole stash filled up with Ist runes.
What has Blizzard stated(or promised) about D3 currency/economics?
Auction House system. Thats one. One central place for trading,
no more spamming in channels. Though, i bet they will never get rid
of it enterly.
But what currency will they use for gold? No, this will never have the
D3 feeling. Gold is and should always be a side currency in this game.
It should be used, but for nothing of value.
What i was thinking,
Some sort of "Disenchant" remember in early game where your whole
stash was filled with low level uniques? And where you had no use
at all for them when you reached nightmare?
What if we can turn these in at a merchant which then "disenchants" it.
Giving you a emblem, or whatever you can call it. It might be a bit ripped
from WoW;
Normal - Copper Emblem
Nightmare - Silver Emblem
Hell - Gold Emblem
Amount of Emblems rewarded is based on item lvl and it could vary a little.
This way, your items are never useless. There will be no useless uniques,
if you can't use them. Shard em, for Emblems.
It might sound a bit like, just another word for "gold". But you could add a
Guildwars twist in the system aswell. Where you would get a part of the
sharded item, and you could forge multiple parts together and form a
new item. (if im right, i've heard this somewhere)
All in all, this is just my idea. Far from useable i know, but what do you guys
think? Should there be gold? Or a new, more creative and flexible system.
Which still keeps the Diablo feel of trading items for items.

The little boat gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a bowling ball wouldn’t...
I like items as currency not gold. trading item is more d2-like than using gold. In d2 the only reason why items werent the currency anymore because of mass duping and everyone had the super items. If u go back in time and play d2 in the early stages im willing to bet people traded items n stuff. i never played d2 back in the day though, only assuming. seems right.
How about a system where you can put in certain parameters in your account. There's a page where you can edit what items you are looking for, and what items you want to get rid of. Then the system automatically matches this with someone else's requests, and suggests you trade with them.
About as efficient as an Auction system, and much less of a hassle. More importantly: no need for a common currency!
A common currency makes mid-level and low-level items viable on the market, instead of just the most high end items. So I don't see why you would be so eager to dismiss a common currency as something bad.
I'd really like to use both gold and item trades equally..
This is a bit :offtopic:, but it may get some of you thinking..
I think the reason that gold works so well in the economy of WoW is because characters have professions, and they create things that other players need to buy. Just like in real life, you create things and get money for it. On top of this they have items people find.
In diablo II, you have no professions, so items are being traded for.... other items, there was no use for gold if you were just going to use it to buy other items. I am NOT saying that diablo three needs professions, just wondering if anyone thinks this is why gold works so well with WoW but not so much for Diablo II.

1) Because you don't trade useful gear in WoW (rather consumables and things that help you upgrade your gear which you are constantly in the need of because you constantly change your gear)
2) Because of the soulbinding system (so that items cannot be used, reused, and then resold, inflating the economy and giving gold-grinders useful things that they don't deserve)
3) Because spending gold is necessary (if nothing else, then on repairs) so it has a value. Gold sinks that you have to spend in = valuable gold.
That sums it up. Has nothing to do with professions directly, as you suggested.
I agree with both sides here. I think gold should be better used (merchants sell useful stuff past lvl 3, etc) but I also like the fact that items are traded for items and not gold. Gold is something you can just find anywhere even if it is rare. Not to mention gold buyers...
But the problem with this is that people will eventually hoard their riches and will want to turn it into some form that will retain its value. So if not gold then it will be some item (like sojs or hrs). This part is unfortunate.

Sadly, I think the same thing. I just wouldn't trust trading my good items for gold and then not being able to "buy" other good items.

they could put a blacksmith npc of some sort and let you pick magical properties on an item that you want lol
but you have to have seen an item with those abilities for you to be able to get that ability on an item =3
and youi cant copy whole unique abilities just their individuality
and every weapon can only have this done to = a total of 3 abilities lol
thus still making searching for uniques worthful lol
or the ability to craft a random unique for a huge huge huge huge price xD
i think it would be a nice replacement to the gamble system lol
also make some abilities off limits until a certain lvl =3
Be my Buddy =^.^=
