I think every early gov. has done that stuff. It would be funny if players made their own money.
ha ha. I'm picturing a $1 dollar bill with my signature on the front. I wonder if players made their own money, if one players money would actually take off or not. I'm guessing not.

if gold is the currency its going to be the worst game ever

Why will it make it the worst game ever?
I second that question.
What would you use that is an even predictable unit of account that has intrinsic value? How would you set prices without gold? I kind of like finding gold myself, they just need to make is scarcer than it was in D2. I think they ought to add silver to help add value to gold. You know say 20 silver pieces to 1 gold piece. Make silver as rare gold was in D1 and make gold even harder to come buy and worth more. Now it becomes good treasure.
if gold is the currency everything will have a set price... ie hoz= 654 gold..... if gold is the currency there will be no bartering at all
Not necessarily gold could still be added and bartering could make it even more interesting. It's done every day in the real world. There is price and value, supply and demand. If there is a glut of swords in town, well then it's a buyers market, if there is a shortage then it's a sellers market. They could still even add in item for item bartering. Gold was used as money because trying to find people who wanted whatever trinket you had frequently was a pain the ass. So everyone agreed on gold, but who's to stop you from adding to the bid with a fine bottle of ale. I'll give you 3 gold pieces and a keg of beer, that could add a real dynamic to the social setting in D3.

I really don't know how you figure that...
"Well the vendor will buy this unique for 600 gold, but i know a player will easily pay more. Let's see who wants to buy it."
How would it ever have a EXACT price? Unless you vendor it every time.
You could also still trade it for another item if you wished.
The beauty of gold is it's a in between thing. I may not need an item for trade right that second but I can sell someone the item for whatever amount we both agree upon and then accumulate that gold until I find something I DO want.
but gold isnt the real world... people will not accept a lower trade, look at wow
nooone wants an item for less then its worth, there will be a set value and thats final... every few and far between there will be a trade no by the books... but just like diablo ppl wont want anything but the currency

Not true, Perfect gems basically was the gold currency (unless talking more valuable items which were above 40 P gems of worth), you just need gold to be usable just like how P gems were usable (for rerolling), then it'll be exactly the same, the only difference is that P gems took up inventory where as gold doesn't.
Gems are not easy to reproduce in predictable sizes, yes they were used but value was difficult.
I think some here are missing a really cool opportunity to make the game fun. Blizzard could do all this, after all its programming! You can add dynamics to NPC characters, what their hot buttons, needs, supply demand, etc. Things from far off lands can have additional value, but gold could still be a base money, to sweeten the bartering process you could throw in items of need or want to clinch the deal and it could work both ways.
You could also have NPC's each set their own prices instead of everyone being exactly the same like previous Diablo games. Base it on their personalities, ethics, etc. Now you have to shop around for the best deals and develop rapport with NPC's, if an NPC is too shifty, maybe they can have scenes where they get chased out of town or tarred and feathered. You could even have traveling snake oil salesmen who drift through town.
Personally I like elements of realism in my fantasy based games, it's what makes them more believable. LOTR book is a classic example, the line between what could be real and fake sometimes was so subtle it frequently made the unreal seem real.
there are always ppl trying to break into the big leagues, who trade pgems and weak uniques. but the best players dont do that....... anyone who has the best chars wont trade any item less them 5 hrs

Well I do want them to make gold valuable and make it rare. Gold in games is so plentiful that it shouldn't be named Gold. Gold in the real world is somewhat rare and valuable.
So maybe these ideas should be applied to Diablo 3. My theory is that with the gold you get you'll buy another resource which is more rare, unless they make Gold very rare itself.
Besides that I hope they come up with a good system that prevents duplication.

I guess that's what runes are of D2

It's called money.

Really though you're against a gold currency but you're also going to condemn someone for trading pgems for anything in the same breath?
What would the game be if it were up to you? Just PvP and trading high rune for high rune?
