Some people belive diffrent things. I started the Diablo series when I was 7 playing single player with my dads help. We played Diablo 2 and 1 off and on there together for a while. One day a while later (I was still young) I asked what was Battle.net and he showed me. The only thing I suffered at the age of 7 on batte.net was the people back then who could hack would really just kick me out of there games as soon as I joined and the people calling me a noob. I was 7 I didnt know what most of the stuff was I just ignored them and played how I wanted to play. (I didnt even know what tp was I remember a guy saying enter my tp im sitting there dumbfounded untill he finally said enter my portal lol) I turned out fine im 15 now im not messed up but I guess im a lucky one

Yeah I'd definitly stalk your kids while playing diablo.
Heh, this.
Honestly, there are some creepy people on Bnet, but I don't think your kids are in much danger. A stray "fuck" or "shit" here and there is about the worst they'll be subjected to. I don't think your kids are going to be in much danger from pedos. Even if they are, surely to god they have the common sense not to meet up with people they've met over Bnet.
If your kids are smart and have common sense, they'll be fine.
If not, keep them in LAN.

the game will prob be 15+ anyway? so if ur that concerned about your kids why let them play games like these anyway?
I completely agree. It is up to Blizzard to make the best game possible it is up to the parents to tell thier kids to behave and don't talk to stupid strangers.
And there will probably be a profanity filter anyway.
I dont think ther weill be. The games is rated M it could be an optionbut I highly doubt it will be.

Yeah, we had one with D2, which pissed me off.
I missed the days of screaming fuck in the chat channels.
Oh, life just wasn't as satisfying once I couldn't scar young children.
In all seriousness though, we will without a doubt be getting a chat filter with D3, and ways to block people who you deem "Creepy". Hell, it might even include parental controls just for that purpose, most games seem to come standard with some form of it.

I've been playing the Diablo series online since I was nine and I have set to be molested, raped, murdered, or any variation thereof. Your kind is a smudge, intolerant and ignorant, to the post-modern era. The real world does not work like that. There aren't a million pedophiles and rapists online waiting to get to your children. You're paranoid. We don't need your ignorance shoved down our throats. And we certainly do not need or want your intolerance to help further dampen and demure the attitude of this website. We have enough of that kind here, already.
Furthermore, this series has always been a M-rated game series. I would hope that your children would be able to think for themselves and know what should and shouldn't be said online by then. Otherwise, you shouldn't be allowing your children to play said games. We face those same challenges offline everyday, so if you're children are unable to do so in an artificial environment, you have parenting issues that need to be addressed before it's too late.
Now, for LAN, yes, I think it's wrong that it isn't to be implemented, or at least that it has not been talked about at any length for implementation. It would completely ruin the idea of Mod's or other perfectly acceptable things thereof and any community that would build itself around, further reducing the fan community for the game, itself.

Btw if your children are old enough to play Diablo OR Sacred, they should be old enough to go online.
Rubbish. Diablo can be played by anyone. Absolutely anyone. There's nothing really "mature" about neither D1 nor D2. Tons of people played those games at age 5 and nothing happened to them, including myself.
Internet is another story. There is only so much one can teach and explain to their kid, and there are different kinds of kids out there. Not all can be protected from it, and it may be more feasible to block it off completely. Internet is 500x times more dangerous than any mature rated game out there. And there is no rating for the internet, since it is infinite.
I guess no one here ever thinks about their kids. Like, at all.
I'd say Diablo II is a game with E rating while Diablo II's battle.net is very much an M rating. But that's not how the rating system works, unfortunately, since it's there simply to shut mom's up. And if anyone on here thinks that Diablo is a Mature game, that images in Diablo are too bad for a kid, you're a wuss or an idiot.

Edit: wait, can't your kids just make a closed game on b.net and join each other?
I assume he simply wants to block internet off. You can't force your kid not to do something on trust value, they will disobey.
(I believe if one wants to block b.net it would make sense to block online since the latter is much more dangerous?)
At this point it seems like they're discluding things simply because they don't want to do it. Like for example the party limit. While it's true that 4 or 5 is a good party size, why can't they enable 8 just by principal and then let the gamer choose? The LAN thing is just as well. People still do LAN Partys... they'll probably not include the Open B-Net either.
$200 says that guy was a troll lol and we all fell for it as it states in his last line I'll be back in a couple of months then he will laugh at all the replies

Kids technically are at more danger playing outside, since they can actually be abducted by creeps.
Inside on the net, they can't be abducted, unless the kids don't have the mental capacity to figure out the guy who wants to meet them at the park, is a rapist.

"One in every 10 million people can potentially have a headache from this pill." God forbid she is the 0.000000001% of having a headache.
Anyways, i really don't see what the problem is with "kids" going on-line. I mean fuck, is there a problem with "kids" playing outside, despite there being a million more creeps/dangers? Maybe if you're too lazy to do your fucking job as a parent and, you know, actually teach your kids something.
Yeah, that's a good parallel. Exactly what I was saying. It's just a double-standard from fear of the unknown, really- the older generation isn't as knowledgeable about the internet as ours, and the same could be said for future generations.
I look at it this way, if your kids are age 15+ and you think they are still angels that have yet to hear a curse word or have never watched a Rated 'R' or 'MA' movie then you should probably become less of a workaholic and pay attention to your kids more. Who knows maybe you as a parent will learn something from your kids. There is no way kids will not be exposed to this kind of stuff so its better to just let it happen and to teach them that this kind of stuff is not appropriate but they have to deal with it.
I don't think its ignorance, i think its pure control, like health and safety.
Hm... Well, let me rephrase what I said, because yes, you're right: "The ignorance is what causes the control". Ignorance being the reason and control being the reaction. I'm sure there are parents who would just control their children just to control them, but from a human standpoint, normally things are done in the best intentions and, if they go wrong, they aren't meant to be so.
Or at least that's what I think. Oh well
You guys are simplifing the problem. One cannot blame the parents because of the childs mistakes - and everyone make mistakes, have weakness, etc...And this stuff can be explored by those net freaks.
For exemple, one boy that have hard time making friends or knowing girls in the school is problably a easy target for a pedofiler because his problably very lonely, even with his lan parties friends.
I agree that the paranoia over the internet exist , but some ignore the dangers.
I strated to play D1 with 9 years old and i'm very sure a 9 years boy are 100% unable to use the internet freely.
About the topic: yes, no LAN is just very veyr veyr stupid. I'm a SP/Lan player because it's so much cool to play with ppl you really kno. And LAN si very different from a closed game because of the lag.
I am personally disappointed that they decided not to add LAN to the mix. I think that I heard in a interview with Jay Wilson(?) I believe that adding LAN would not take much because all the coding is essentially there with the battlenet multiplayer. I also get the impression that they want battlenet to be the focus of multiplayer and not have any other multiplayer. I find this annoying because it makes no sense to me that my friend and I who are less than 3 feet from each other on computers in a LAN have to both log onto battlenet to play a game of Diablio 3. This also brings up the point of completely relying on the battlenet servers being up for us to play, and lastly if it is so easy to implement LAN why doesn't blizzard do it instead of letting a third party mod do it.
In the case of this particular family, I strongly believe it's the bright side. The father being all mature and all opening a thread in the "Suggestions" section (not knowing, probably, that Blizzard doesn't operate on these forums despite the somewhat confusing blues tracker), and just to inform everyone how the sales of two copies of D3 are supposedly lost to two copies of Sacred 2. How dramatic!
Except that nobody gives a shit. And my previous point remains.
I believe that if the kids are old enough to play the game then they must also be old enough to listen if their parents warn them of a danger. For example my sister is 15 she has been spending a growing time on facebook and WoW. My mum and dad explained to her to NEVER give out her details to ANYONE she speaks to on the internet and she never does. On the rare occasion that she does meet a nutter she blocks and reports them if they start to behave inappropriately. I think that going on the internet can ever be 100% safe in terms of the content that you might encounter but if a child is too young to play on a MMO then they are probably too young to go on the internet unsupervised at all.
I think its the same as "stranger danger" that we got taught in shcool. You got taught to never talk to strangers and never to accept sweets or go with anyone outside of school other than your parents. I think the same rule can be applied to MMO's and chatrooms, Tell the child that they must not under any circumstances agree to meet anyone or give any details out to people and then tell them where the block button is Ive been playing WoW for years and in all that time I think that Ive had to block 3 people for being abusive to me specifically. All the other times they are just spamming the general channel and the prof filter picks out most of the bad language anyway.
Anyway my parents have always been more concerned with preventing us from seeing violent or cruel images rather than protecting us from the general public. I think they beleive that there is no way to stop us from interacting with other people but things like SAW or GTA are a big no no (until we get to about 16-18, then we can watch what we like nothing is off limits).
In regards to the LAN issue I agree that it can be more fun to play just amongst friends in the same room/house but I will buy diablo for the single player not the multiplayer. Ive got WoW for multiplaying.
