In the most recent interview with Jay Wilson, he talked about some ideas on how to help players share items amongst their own characters. The general consensus is a shared stash. Many mods have used this system and it seems very easy to implement and use. However, he also mentioned a mailing system. While shared stash may seem easier, the mailing system offers many more aspects to be used. Trading with other players or gifting items to your friends while they are not on can be done through a mailing system. If an Auction House is implemented, the items and gold will most likely sent through a mailing system. With the additional benefits to a mailing system,I am beginning to think that maybe there will be no shared stash contrary to popular belief.
I sure wish there would be a shared stash. Once you start using it in mods like ES, it's really hard to play vanilla LoD and be fucking around with your mules again. A mailing system sounds nice, but I worry how it might be exploited or if bots will somehow manage to hijack it and annoy us all over again.
I think it'd be cool just to have like a vault that all your characters can access. It doesn't have to be off any given player. And maybe you could even put a code on the vault and if you felt like it, you could share that code with your friends and tell them just to get the item they need.
To me, I think that if they implement a mailing system, which I think they will for some sort of auction house mechanic, then there just isn't a need for a shared stash. I think to some degree it looses an affect of playing that particular character when you can go into your stash and see all of the items of all of your other characters. I also think that there needs to be some penalty/work involved in sharing your items. Simply opening your stash and picking and choosing whatever just seems too easy.
Whaaat? Shared stashes are so nice. Of course, not having one wouldn't be too bad as long as they find a way for you to find some use for unwanted items. And to be fair, I was impressed with that system they showed of breaking down unwanted items for raw materials. So if I got like a cool ax that I found with my Witch Doctor, but I had no way of giving it to my Barbarian, at least I'd be able to do something with it other than just selling it for some gold.
I am not saying you should not be able to share items with your other characters. In fact, I thought this was one major thing missing from D2. I hated getting awesome gear for a druid on my barb or so on and so on. I also played hellfire with the cornerstone and couldn't figure out why D2 did not have something like this. I just think that a shared stash is not the way to do it. It is a mechanic that adds nothing else, like the mailing system, and I also think there needs to be a cost for doing this.
I'm just going to look at WoW and say, why should it be so much more painful to email items to different toons if you can just have a shared stash?
A shared stash also assumes things can stay in and be accessed rapidly by any of your characters, instead of having to specify before hand -which- character to send it too.
Sure, mails can do the same things but it takes more time, a shared stash is just much more practical.
Maybe a gold fee to take out an item of a different characters stash. But overall, I just don't see it being necessary if they implement a mailing system.
Mm, I suppose so. I mean, basically, there should be some method of item exchange between characters, but it shouldn't be so free for all like a shared stash. Accessibility between characters is important, but not something to take for granted either. I gotcha.
If they implement a mailing system similar to the one in WoW theres really no need for a shared stash - I guess it could be added for overkill or make it easier to snag something you need during a game without having to swap characters and mail it.
Really, any system like mail/stash would be a major improvement over the D2 mule system. I really hated keeping track of which stuff was on which mule. And nothing made me more ticked off than making a stable private game to swap things, droppin my stuff on the ground, and poof lag spike/server crash/inet broken or just not able to rejoin the game to get your stuff for whatever reason. Knowing that awesome item is just laying there and gonna be deleted cause you can't reconnect so sucked.
