So after reading the whole lvl 60 cap i went and read the other blue posts. and i looked at other posted in the lvl cap thread. bishiok also posted this.
"You can only have seven skills at any one time.
I'm not sure that's been laid out that specifically before, but it is important in fully understanding how skill point pacing works with the new level cap."
(sorry i dont use forums much and dont know how to make it a "blue" post.
but anyway....WHAT!!!!!!!!!
this confuses me just a little bit. So, we can only have 7 active skills at a time?
I don't see any problem there. You won't need skills anymore just to access other skills (like in a tree). And it's not counting passive skills, if there are any. Besides, I can't recall ever actively using more than 7 skills in D2 either, it's a lot... No worries there.
With my bone necro i had bone spear and spirit, bone wall, depcrify curse, bone armor and clay golem. 6 active and usefull skills. So i guess 7 would be good.
It seems like they are finding all the random things about D2 and other games, and then making them limitations in D3. lol. Odd, but I suppose it makes sense.
the good thing about this is that you wont need to put points into previous skills in order to proceed to the really awesome ones. the bad one that you'll have to respec or make another character to use different sets of skills at times.
7 is a decent number, no doubt, but i'd prefer to be given the option to use any number i prefer. Wizard, Witch Doctor and Monk could easily use more than 7.
Has anything been confirmed about what level a spell would be maxed at? If its still 20, then you would only be able to max our 3 skills. Which may be a fair number if there are no synergising skills like there was in d2 1.10+. If there are synergies then maxed out spells at level 20 would be way too high, it would need to be about level 10 for a maxed skill. Having 5 maxed out skills would be epic :D, even if 3 of them are synergies, most likely a maxed out synergy would be useful anyway.

does this not mean watering down those classes to be across teh board and weaker than a specialist? this said then, are they then not creating/forcing certain builds instantly?
is this going to create some kind of imbalance to "any build can rock it"?
for example (bad example but you get my point!)
a stomp barb is the best barb over one that is a dd barb - nice to have the dd barb but must/always choose a stomp barb over all others?
you do have a valid point there but i have a different opinion.
you're right about the characters that use more skills instead of specializing being less effective (fact). but i like to play for the fun of it and maybe some more challenge and i like to be (much more) versatile. i'm also known to my friends for my (very) weird specs that usually work and i kinda feel limited by a max number of active skills i can use.
not saying it will break the game or anything. i'll have to play it to see if i'll feel "limited" by that system or not. still in my mind its not the best way to go.
Too many skills and it becomes too WoW-like anyway. And I'm not saying that to be all "omg D3 is a WoW clone dsfdlkj", I could easily use any other game as an example. But yeah, Diablo should be about positioning on the battlefield, not choosing to use a certain skill out of ten or more possibilities.
But yeah, my sorceress had more than 7 skills hotkeyed. But most of that was teleport, town portal, identify, telekinesis (you can use it to access the stash from the waypoint), buffs, etc. I think most of that will have their own hotkeys in D3..
i recall a three-elemental sorc in Diablo II classic using more skills than my mage in WoW. my fun necro (curser/summoner) more skills than my warlock in WoW too!
but this part has nothing to do with WoW really. the limitation of the active skills you're allowed to use reminds me of Guild Wars where you had to decide which set of skills you'll be able to use in every dungeon. Haven't played Guild Wars so i can't really tell how i'm gonna find it.

too me no.... any barb should be a good barb thats balance you can do what you want how you want.....my summing WD should be as strong as a casting WD and same with every class.....thats how you balance things...and for the 7 skill thing like most of u said i can only think of a few skill in D2 at once and dont forget you had to switch which means u could really only have 2 active skills at once so going from 2 active skills to 7 is a BIG JUMP and is in for some MAJOR SKILL COMBOS
I feel the only possible problem would be with the Witch Doctor being used as a summoner, but other than that I see no problem.
BTW will there be bonus skills?
Like how if you put points into defiance it boosted your holy shield?
i believe they have said that there will be no skill synergy in d3 like d2.
yes they did they said it wasnt fair to the player to have to spend those points not only to get to the skills you wanted but never use some of them...they said a skill up is a reward and u should be able to use that reward as much as needed...(not exact quote but u catch the drift :))

In D2 you often only used 2 or 3. I don't understand what you're trying to say anyways

With my other chars i barely use 3 skills.

Another thing they could do maybe is have unlockable skill slots; maybe something the mystic can do... I dunno
