Well, I haven't posted in here since about a year ago, but this sort of scared me. Please excuse me if this has been debated before, as I haven't been posting.
Okay to start this off, I'm going to give you some crude directions to show a proper quote off the US.Blizzard.com/Diablo3/ website.
If you go to http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/world/systems/runestones.xml, the section of the D3 site about runestones, and observe the captioned picture it says, and I quote, "You’ll be able to place a runestone in each of your seven skills by opening the Skills screen. A rune’s specific effect on a skill is explained through a tooltip."! It blatantly says EACH of your SEVEN skills. Does this mean we're only getting seven skills per character, instead of the three skill trees of Diablo II? If so this is a deal-breaker to me, without skill trees Diablo won't be the same.
Oh, and before you bring up Diablo I saying it was fine without skill trees, think about it. We played/still play Diablo II because of the various builds you can have of each character. In Diablo I, I simply made one epic character who could max every skill and trade for all the stat-boosting potions and be done with it. Diablo II I still play, but if Diablo III only has seven skills per character, I'd be lucky to get a few months of entertainment out of it.
Tell me what you think, or rather if you believe this is even the case. That quote could simply mean you choose seven skills out of the tree to use or something like the sorts, but even if that is the case it won't be the same.

Will be changed at some point, I'm too lazy right now.
When you "spec" your character you will get to pick a maximum of 7 active skills per character to put points in. You have an open skill tree (not 3 different) with a lot of various skills (Bashiok's guess at an average was ~22 per class). So you will have many more skills, but only 7 available at a time. Then there's also the traits, basically passive abilities that you gain separately from your normal skills.
Passive skills no longer exist, and are instead traits, which increase the number of skills available to you if you compare it to diablo 2. In fact, in diablo 2 you only had 1-2 active skills at most, the rest was synergy or passives.
Yeah, that.
It's definitely an improvement from the previous game. There will be less "dead meat" in your spec now and more chance to actually put points in skills you are going to use.
The new UI reflects this change to seven skills. On the left will be your seven skill slots which will unlock as you level. To the right is a window with all the skill choices possible, broken up by when you can access them. This will help you to see directly what you have as well as what you can get and plan for future levels. All skills start off with a possible increase of five ranks but there will be a chance to increase this amount through other means. Leveling up a skill will be as simple as clicking o the skill in the UI.
I see nothing in the replies here that would indicate that DIII is "becoming" WoW. I'd be interested to hear why you've drawn that conclusion.
What's your actual point? Do you want more active skills than Diablo II? You have them. Do you want more flexibility in how you choose those skills? You have that. Do you want the ability to modify skills to better tailor them to your traits (i.e. passive skills) and gear? You have that. Do you want Diablo II? You have that, it's already installed on your computer.
What do you want, and what do you think you're not getting?
I think "skills" in this case would be better described as "spells" (SHHH barbarians. that was a pre-emptive SHH). You have 7 different attack "spells" on top of normal damage. The devs have worked very hard to make all skills consistently useful during gameplay. I would suggest having a look at the great wiki on this site to learn more about the many, many different ways you'll be able to kill the ass out of monsters.

The "So Diablo is becoming WoW" is the greatest compliment any game could ever accomplish.
WoW is quite possibly the most popular and celebrated PC game of all-time, while Diablo 2 remains very popular over ten years from its initial release.
If you combine those two games into one... You have the greatest piece of software ever created.
i know we all are lil racist when it comes to gaming (guilty myself) but we do hate all games equally
with all that equal hate, comes equal love for gaming, and it could seem like merging 2 games gives great outcome, but i would love to see future diablo stay the way it is, and WoW be the same.
i love my RPG the same way it is, my MMORPG as is,my RTS is as hard as it gets, my FPS ballin, and my MOBA just trollin.
So I saw this comment, "So, basically Diablo III is becoming WoW?" Warning lights have now started flashing.
Let me try and help with redefining this comment. WoW is a game with a combat system that can have a combat bar with tons of different buttons. It is a very simple game, but can become very complicated. The actual combat system of WoW is rotation based, which is what I think your question seems to be relating to.
Diablo is a different beast, hell I don't think a single character reacts the same. Think of DIII like D2 but instead of hitting "w" to switch your skills out you just had 1-5 LMC, and RMC. That is how you get to 7 skills.
Now this isn't always a rotation setup, I think that maybe the Monk may have rotation play since he/she has a combo system but that really isn't nailed down. Every character has spells/attacks/skills that they use independent of each other. The barbarian can whirl wind to his hearts content to clear the way for instance, as long as he has the resources (fury) to use it. WoW is a different beast it is more about one monster at a time not you versus hell. To work in this system, you have your rotation and wait for a proc to break it up. From what I know, there is no proc system like that in DIII, you "choose" your spells that support the encounter.
Will your Monk use the exploding fist palm to do AoE, do a big combo to build up spirit, or throw a shield thingy to repel fireballs heading his way? There will be more options then that, probably a dodge and other such things. So basically it is Diablo like abilities now just more of them. Less button mashness, and more choose how to actually combat your enemy.
The "So Diablo is becoming WoW" is the greatest compliment any game could ever accomplish.
False, that statement is an insult, WoW made mmorpg popular, thats it. Even before WoW, people played mmorpg games that just didn't get the same spotlight as WoW, Asian countries literally had an Orcs vs. Humans sort of game long before WoW was ever made. WoW is just an overhyped standard mmorpg.
Now the statement "Diablo 3 is becoming a much improved and flawless Diablo 2" is a compliment. who said that?

Blizzard used to care about releasing Diablo III, then they all took an arrow in the knee...
Its worse than you think, I was ok with 7 skills but last I heard it was going to be a 20 level skill cap, at level 60 thats only 3 skills =/
not even 7, but just 3-4

Wait, you want 7 skills with maximum points in all of them? That's just not how it works (or how it worked in D2). Choosing what skills you invest points in is part of the game.
I think you might have
im saying you would be a fool NOT to max your skills, and if you maxed your skills you would only end up with 3 skills if you have a skill level cap of 20.
I laughed, first the original poster came in and made one of the most naive threads iv'e seen that would of took 5 minutes to read up you have around 22 skills per class and 7 active skills ( way more then diablo II ) and said it was to constraining, and now he got what he wanted ( more skills for variety - 7 active skills [not to mention 5 runestones that almost completely change the spell which kind of makes it 22x5 or 7x5 active]) and says "It's like WoW" when WoW has way more then that ( and quite frankly they still are and always will be completely different games )
Are you just trying to find something to cry about? my god..... try to be more informed about gaming in general before making a thread :/

Yeah, that.

Oh, and I forgot to mention a huge part in the customization of your skill spec. Runestones. Go check them out (and be amazed) at http://eu.blizzard.com/diablo3/world/systems/runestones.xml
More info on it in the news article (that isn't too new anymore)
Character Customization
I don't really see any similarities to the talent system that WoW uses. Tbh D2's skill tree system is closer to that.
I remember using roughly 4-5 spells in D2, max.

"Kill the ass out of monsters!"
Naw, it's because they both use health/energy systems.
D3 = WoW.
