Ess of Johan can be a bit of a PITA when your follower pulls a pack of mobs AWAY from you immediately after you used Cyclone Strike to pull them TO you. I am thinking of swapping this out for my monk as it has been irritating me to no end recently.
I'll use a gift on a follower wep and put a gem in it (why wouldn't you?) to max out their damage. .
I'll admit I've used a gift on a non ancient that I've used because I just couldn't get an ancient but I found that decision hard let alone one for a follower. If you want to see how much damage they do change your settings to the lowest difficulty (normal), at a lvl 70 with 600 paragons nothing will be able to touch you (they die as soon as they do) and just stand there and let the follower fight trash that you were killing at the beginning of season with a bow that had 11 dps on it.
I would add that when you have the chance to add damage in the form of a socket on your weapon, that you use a topaz gem. it provides a fixed amount of thorns damage. that will far outweigh any benefit from a ruby (str). 220 str or whatever the amount is laughable on a follower. CDR and AS being the only real benefits.
Hmm, that is an interesting way to think about it. Although damage is negligible for the most part from your follower, this may possibly be a slightly more useful alternative!

The benefit from socketing a flawless royal ruby in a weapon is +270 (base) damage increase (not Str). If you are curious try them both out for yourself and notice the average normal and critical hits from your follower (also you might be surprised how high your follower crits are).
Would def agree that the goal is to get the most skill procs and not max out damage at the expense of those procs. Good hunting.

I have long wondered if increased damage (ruby) versus thorns (topaz) on follower weapon was better? If you're using freeze of deflection you're WANTING him to get hit, and all I've ever heard is pursuing damage dealt on a follower is a waste of time.
I would say best thing to do is worry about stuff like IAS and CDR on your follower to help them proc stuff/use abilities more. That's where they are truly useful.
May not of been clear on the point i was making. chasing ANY kind of damage on a follower is just not practical. what i meant was...IF...you wind up with an open slot on a weapon after AS and CDR. that said, for damage, thorns is best. it will damage all around the follower and often he is mobbed (ess of johan).
To put this in perspective, i long ago thought goose up follower damage. its bound to at least help. after squeezing out max damage on him, he stood at like 240k damage. I now have 3.7 million. my follower with a build like that would do 1/15th my damage. that's sheet of course, but its still relative.
followers got no set like you have (or lon), no convention, no traveller/compass, focus/restraint, other multipliers from passives, skills or items, leg. gems, .... the list goes on...
your follower does absolutely no dmg, trust me. it's not 1/15 more like 1/100,000
and on top they mostly attack with no skill at all (base attack)
xD
go for IAS and CDR with the proper useful items like mentioned in this thread

you missed the point of my post. the "1/15th" was just to illustrate how the follower's damage pales in comparison to your own. its to the point of being negligeable at best. we all know that. where you are wrong is saying they have none.like what's already been said here numerous times, if given the opportunity to add damage to them WITHOUT forsaking their useful stats, then why not? they most certainly do "SOME" damage. build your follower for all damage and watch them solo rifts. granted, it might take the a week to finish one at T1. put it to hard difficulty and watch them plow thru it!!!

That IAS comment wasn't directed at you (it was directed at myself.. haha) . Keep doing what you do and I will keep watching your vids.
(Edit: I don't know where the quote went but you know what I'm sayin.)
