Yeah I too was happy to see they made followers end game viable. I really though the whole concept of making them good only through normal was lame and pointless.
I wondered what the OP was talking about with mercs stealing your experience. Seemed like something I would have known, so I did some investigating. From the Arreat Summit hirelings page. http://classic.battle.net/diablo2exp/basics/hirelings.shtml
Keep in mind that Hirelings aren't just paid mercenaries--they are co-adventurers. They fully share experience for their kills with you, and they receive a smaller share of experience for monsters that you kill.
this is interesting, i was sure that i had done a test previously in d2 and that my merc killing things didnt give me xp, i guess i was wrong haha! well i still wasnt sure about d3 so there you go. ty for checking all this

I was confused about "They fully share experience for their kills with you" too. I wasn't quite sure what "share" meant in that case (they get the same XP vs you and the merc get half the XP). Thanks for clearing that up!
Did I read right that the followers only are usable when you solo? So if you play with a friend most of the way, when you do go to solo, your follower will be a very low level since you have been in a party most times? Maybe they are doing something to counter that or like in Diablo 2, you could buy a pre-leveled (though not all the way leveled) merc.
Hopefully the follower still collects exp when you are in a party and they are sidelined.
Anyways no you can't really hire the followers like you did in D2, they're the same characters. So you can't fire your level 14 and hire a 19.
Well that is too bad! I'm sure they have something that makes it so they level up then when you aren't using them. And if they don't, I'm sure they will fix it somehow.
I was under the impression that D3 hirelings acted in a sense as an AI controlled second player as opposed to a AI controlled semi-helper. That may not make sense, but what I mean is that the hireling is supposed to act as if you are playing a somewhat multiplayer game, but with an AI controlled secondary player instead of a human controlled player.
With this logic, the hireling should mimic playing with another human to some extent. Sharing exp as you would with a human co-operative player. This may be wrong, but I thought Blizzard were really trying to beef up the hireling to something with more character and impact than D2.
This is great for me as I prefer the pacing of playing solo, you tend to find in multiplayer everyone is rushing around rather than enjoying the atmosphere of the game. However, it's impossible to deny the increased killing power of the human controlled player. The beefed up hireling will give me that extra help that a D2 hireling did not, I hope.
thats right.. followers level up, even if u dont use them, and stay always in town... so whenever u decide to invite them back, they will be leveled to current level..
That's not true right now. I can invite my level 12 templar to join my level 13 barbarian and he doesn't suddenly turn level 13 also. I'm not sure how they plan to handle this, I know they'll fix it somehow but as of right now followers have their own exp bar.

BOOM! A follower item that requires level 53 for them to equip it.
"Do Hirelings or Minions take any extra experience?
No. You don't get any less experience for using Hirelings. "
haha i guess yeah but a bit late now funny, my instinct was that it felt wrong playing WITH the hireling, i guess we all think differently

This would make sense though I haven't tested it.

He is level 10 with a level 10 skill to choose and has exactly 0/28,900 XP.
Me thinks they scale.
