In a short time, the D3 cinematic sets up the back story of the war and Sanctuary AND introduces the initial mystery for the start of the game. What more should a cinematic do?
Well said, Thats all a new player needs to get into the action. Epic battle, amazing CGI, short and to the point, now the gamer is ready to game.
"Well okay. That was neat. But I have no idea what just happened or who the hell those people are or what the hell that cardboard stuff was. Okay. I guess I play as a Demons or something fighting Angels. Or whatever... Wait, what the hell? A Barbarian? ... I didn't see that... Whatever."
You see your character in the Diablo 2 cinematic before stopping the game? No.
Do they explain to you who any of the people are in the Diablo 2 cinematic outside of Marius, who you never see in the actual game? No.
Apparently you (or whoever is going to be saying this) is too stupid to realize that they were creating the character they would be playing at the character creation screen. They are also too dumb to realize that the 'cardboard stuff' was a drawing of what the narrator was talking about.
Good lord.
I can understand just not liking the cinematic. I get the whole "I'm not a fan of the drawing art style" thing. That's preference based. But the rest of what you are trying to lay on the cinematic is ridiculous.
Sure.
Ignore the fact the entire cinematic of Diablo 1 is centered around the Warrior character.
Ignore the fact that the entire intro cinematic of Diablo 2 is centered around humans trying to fight off Demons and getting murdered as the only guy left is driven insane by ramblings.
Ignore the idea of humanity fighting demons, you know, like Diablo 1 and 2 show us, and just prefer a super model and an old man falling as a meteor hits.
Do you even know the story of d3?
People dont even think demons are really ever coming.... all that stuff is legend, nothing bad is going on in the world, why would they be showing anything like people fighting demons? The line where he goes " Do you believe me" or something like that is perfect for the story about to come.
to add to it, Your character knows nothing, you learn whats going on as your character.
Kinda hard to imagine that just 20 years prier they had the Dark Wanderer ravaging the world and bringing death and destruction and a whole host of demons in his wake. Not to mention Mount Arrett blowing up and no one thinks demons are real?
I know thats what they are going for, or more specifically, Leah. She was but an infant when the events of D2 happened so she never lived it. But everyone else? donno.
Your character follows the exact path of Marius through the game, and he's the one telling your characters story in the last cinematic or two. The cinematic introduction shows how feeble humans are and how insane demons are towards these humans - the characters you will be playing will have to overcome them.
How am I supposed to know Marius is going to continue to tell the story? How am I supposed to know who Tyreal is? How do I really know that's Tyreal? Why don't they tell me all about the prison like area that he is in?
They don't tell me anything about the initial town I'm in or the people in it. They don't explain the first act or where I'll be heading after the first act. How am I supposed to figure out what I'll be killing? Who is the real bad guy in this plot, is it the guy I'm following or something else?
How am I supposed to understand anything unless they explain everything imaginable and leave nothing to my imagination?

I was responding to your comment, "But the entire cinematic of Diablo 2 wasn't centered around your character. So how wasn't Blizzard abandoning how the series was going before then? Dun, dun, dun!!!1!1!1"
Or were you simply talking about the INTRO cinematic? Considering you said "Entire cinematic" I had no idea what you meant.
Also, you would be wrong if you've read anything I've stated as "they need to explain everything imaginable." I did not make that claim nor did I state any of the prior intros have. I simply stated they
A. Showed your character or humanity struggling against what your player will be struggling against.
B. Gave you some idea of the worlds state.
C. Showed you in some way enemies your character will face or how he will be facing them.
A Diablo 1 or Diablo 2 cinematic in the same storyline would show your character dealing with the war firsthand, and show humans falling or rising amongst the Angels/Demons weaving powerful magic or wielding powerful gear. Then it possibly would've flashed to Cain with Leah, explaining the meteor more as it crashes down.
Leah very awkwardly walks up and puts a blanket on Cain and hes like "You don't believe me?" AS the ceiling is collapsing. It's really oddly paced on top of everything else.

You should identify the causes and ideas behind "subtext."
The main character of Diablo is the warrior. He is shown walking through the remnants of demonic destruction and even Diablo himself as the main villain at the end of the cinematic. He is shown dealing with, first hand, the destruction and chaos that demons can bring and he is shown walking in a "no mans land" or an area where most people are dead and everything has been destroyed by something. That something is shown at the end in the catacombs to be demonic creatures.
No, I'm not "trolling."
This is precisely what I don't understand behind your line of reasoning. You know all that stuff now because you've played the games. But you would never have known all that just based on the cinematic. The Diablo 3 cinematic does the EXACT SAME THING. After playing the game, you'll know what and who these two main characters are, what crashed into the cathedral, and what your role in in the entire thing. How's that for subtext?
Also, I just wanted to say that I don't want to seem like I'm attacking you: if you didn't like the cinematic, that is more than fine. But you're logic and reasoning is just weird to me. Continue friendly debate.

I am so incredibly happy that you are not in charge of anything with this game. You would show the character fighting and killing angels/demons... even though the war hasn't even started yet.
I am guessing they are using the drawings because it is a way to show what the prophecy says, even though it hasn't come true yet. I wouldn't be surprised if you see the full animation of that scene (or something very similar to it) later in the game when it makes more sense to show the full CGI version of an all out war... when it's actually taking place.
I also have no idea how that's "oddly placed". Cain is some old ass dude that they reveal Leah is related too. She's likely putting a blanket on him and accompanying him because she cares for him... or is that too difficult to figure out too? He's asking if she believes him because he doesn't want her to think he is out of his mind. Also too difficult to figure out, I guess?
Great trailer Blizzard! I quite don't understand the comments saying there's no information in this trailer about the game to come. Am I the only one to have stuck on "And Justice shall fall amongst the men"? Seems quite indicative of Tyrael being the comet IMHO...

I would show the character fighting angels and demons... In the same fucking prophecy where the war is taking place.
I'm done debating with you. If you believe this intro is satisfactory, I'm glad you accept it.
When I want an intro, I want an intro to the characters I will be playing and to the world as I will see it.

umm what character...your character is noone... hes not an angle or a demon...why would he be in that.... o.0;
So, on topic for the cinematic. Not that this is any new info, but for people who know much of the Diablo 3 story, I thought the first lines of this trailer were awesome (and maybe confirms some people's suspicions):
"And at the end of days, the first sign shall appear in the heavens. JUSTICE shall fall upon the world of men."
Ironic that Tyrael is the Archangel of Justice. Thus, one can deduce that he is that comet. Again, not new info, but interesting subtle wording in the trailer
And, more nods in the trailer that Leah is disturbed and having possible visions. Also, I got this weird vibe from the trailer that Imperius is going to turn out to be a real bastard.

indeed, plus another user pointed out the glass lighting up on just his part before the crash.
Don't see this thread staying open for long, but yeah, my personal feeling was "does not deliver." even compared to the black soulstone video.
Technically it was very good, cain looked incredible, the fighting concept art was neat as well. Those stupid heavy metal grunge riffs can go die in a fire though thank you very much, this isn't Starcraft.
Storytelling wise, yeah it was somewhat lame. The biggest most obvious thing I can put my finger on, is that D1 & 2 had a very gradual buildup, played mostly in the shadows, giving hints of something very dark and wrong, but not really showing it until the end. So it starts off with a tension of "you know something's wrong but what?" and plays on your fear of the unknown, then finally gives you a very brief glimpse of the evil lurking under the surface.
Now D3 somewhat did this with the cathedral falling apart before the meteor came down, but the issue is 1) the meteor isn't evil and 2) the "buildup" was short and 3) it was nearly if not completely outclassed by the crazy fight scene before it. The awesomeness of Diablo 1 & 2's understatement leading to suspense may well have been more about budget limitations than anything else, but for me that worked better than trying to go Micheal Bay on us.
umm what character...your character is noone... hes not an angle or a demon...why would he be in that.... o.0;
What are you talking about my character is no one?
I was saying it should show the HUMANS being obliterated or even FIGHTING back against the Angels and Demons.
In the Sin War novels they certainly did.

But thats not what its trying to show o.0. That would be silly to throw humans into that fight.
This game is about heaven and hell, we humans are now a part of this, but only pawns to the main war. Heaven vs hell.
So I'm playing an Angel or a Demon? What does that introduction prophecy have to do with me as a new player?
Came off as bad michael bay eye candy.

That's the one thing that makes me sad... the length of it was very short.
Overall I liked it and I understand why they used the 'sketch' to open it up. Do wish it was longer though... just because it looks so nice.
It totally blows away anything else I saw on the VGAs. Those other cinematics were child's play in comparison, tbh.
