I kept trying it in multiplayer today. Try it yourself and see. My client has been weird lately, so it might just be me. I'm not sure though, since everything else was working fine.
This is probably dead, but if anyone else is trying to figure this
out, you just need to know the special characters to get either color
codes or text formatting codes.

The special character that looks somewhat like an s and the 1 that
follow it won't display in the book, but instead will tell Minecraft to
color the text blue.
