Since the game will release in about two weeks I thought it would be a good time to discuss tips for new characters, and everyone could contribute something that they did, or would do differently…
I would say that one thing I regretted was wasting money at crafting items that were not as necessary at the time. Also, check the vendors often some of the best gear I got in the beta early was from the vendors like weapons and such…
Don't mute your game if you hate listening to your followers repeating lines. Besides the obvious great music and sound effects you're missing out on, the follower will call out things like "Do you SEE that monster over there?" which signify there is a champ or elite pack nearby. He doesn't always run to them so sometimes you'll only have his audio cue to tell you that you should check that little side room you might just blown past.
to prevent the chat pverflowing with quest lines you can go into sound options and turn of qust chatter in Chat boxes, and have talk bubbles over speaking characters' heads. The talk bubbles include things like 'do you see that enemy over there!'

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...

The "Quest Dialog Subtitles" option also opens the Journal whenever you pick up a lore book.
I wish the two behaviors were separate options because the Journal opening and covering half the screen bothers me...
If you are rushing the game, even if you aren't into breaking barrels or collecting gold when the game launches, try not to ignore big "barrel zones" with 10-12 barrels all together.
You can quickly break all of them with an AoE and essentially you're multiplying the chance of getting something for 12 when breaking those compared to breaking single barrels (kinda like having 1200% MF in D2?).
Also, gold stacks are pretty random as well. Even if you're not "wasting time collecting gold", you should try to not ignore the "big stacks" (early on, these are like 40-50 gold). It's not a big deal when you don't collect that 2 gold stack, but when it's a 40-50 one, you're missing up on a decent oportunity.
Haha when I saw "Don't sell magic items to vendors" I could totally see people not realizing that you can salvage items for crafting since they'd have to explore his other tabs and some people just beeline straight to the things you can do in any ARPG (sell stuff to vendors). Good tips.

this. and also, might be random, but villagers' corpses drop significantly more gold in my experience than say individual barrels. Also, get rings! it's amazing to me to still see people playing beta that aren't wearing rings from the fence. you can instantly add about 10 dps at lvl 6, not to mention +xp and +GF/MF. they are a huge early level boost.
Take the small amount of extra time necessary to pick up all the gold stacks that drop, even if you have to spend 3 extra seconds walking across the screen to get them. From my limited beta experience plus everything Blizzard has been saying, gold will be in high demand. One of the Blizzard videos even has developers mentioning that the single biggest drop they wanted when trying to play Inferno was gold for repair costs.
Go into options and turn on elective mode. If you are savvy enough to be reading these forums, I doubt you need the hand-holding preventing you from making the build that you want to make.

...and if you disagree with me, you're probably <insert random ad hominem attack here>.
Create one or two additional characters before your friends get online or while they are afk, do the first quest and park them with the stash for muleing. If your planing to play for an extended amount of time the first week your stash will fill up fast and then you can do a quick relog and empty the stash into your mules inventory.

gotta love how Blizzard double-backed on the storage capacity of the stash making the archaic chore of muleing required again

At least all you need to do for muling now is stick in stash, pick up with other toon. It will be very nice at the beginning because you won't have to spend money on expanding your stash till later. All you have to do is have 1 main, 9 alts made, and you have reletively simplistic access to almost unlimited inventory space until your main character is max level, at which point it will be no big deal to buy some stash slots.
To elaborate: Bind the force move button! Sometimes you want to move past mobs without accidentally hitting them (i set it to space bar and mouse button 5, thus having multiple ways to relax my LMB-finger)

I've been thinking of optimal key binding and I think I will use the space bar to stop movement and the mouse wheel to force move, then asdf for number keys and p for potion since I am tired of accidentally using them...

If you're binding 1-4 to ASDF instead, you might want to think about H for potions... it's close enough to find it without looking, yet the G key is a nice buffer to prevent you from hitting it accidentally. T or Y would also be good choices, for me anyway; I'll definitely agree that I'll be changing the potion binding, as I wasted more than a few in beta.

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.

@TorukMakto pretty nice guide you made. You covered 99% of it.
Don't forget to bind your keybinds properly.
