with pain in the heart I agree. At this point crafting rare doom armor costs 50 000g + all materials. If you've been patient enough to gather all the blues/rares and books for this it costs you nothing (on the other hand if you disected those items it means you haven't sold them so basically you've lost another 10 - 20kg) so sumarizing crafting 1 pice of armor costs you about 60 - 70k gold and frankly a chance that it will EVER pay off is close to zero. Simply because chance that it has stats that are useful to you ... are extremaly low, and chances that the item will even be sellable on AH for more than it's creation cost are... well ... you know.
Gambling in D2 was great because it gave you the opportunity to get great rare mod combos like integer DR + all res, etc. It was expensive as hell, but you could get 30,000 gold by selling a scrap armor so it wasn't the end of the world. It was particularly great for rings/ammys/boots/helms.
Now it's mats + significant amount of gold + the amount of gold you didn't get because you disenchanted the items for mats...that's rough, especially considering how the items mods are in D3 (STR+DEX+bleeds on hit+health globes!? ALL RIGHT!).
My Blacksmith is only lvl 8 right now though, since I'm only just getting into Inferno (been playing other characters and I figure why not wait for the 1.0.3 patch, depending on how long they take).
