With the 2.1 patch on the horizon offering many new changes, I am wondering if there are any provisions to allow more seasoned players with seasoned equipment to transition. For example, with the new gems schema, will the effects of gems in items to change dramatically ?. There are many of us who in the past searched very hard for certain items and then rerolled certain affixes. With the new changes, will we will likely want to revert. If so, will there functions to revert items back to their original state ? or will Blizzard expect everyone to change their wardrobes so-to-speak.
I have not tried PTR yet so forgive me if my understanding of what i have read is out of the ball park.
Are you asking if there will be any special facilities to change existing items where you made choices that were wise in 2.0 but not so optimal in 2.1?
e.g. an amulet with no socket that you rerolled the elemental damage on, because sockets in amulets weren't that great; now you want to reroll something for a socket so you can put a legendary gem into it.
If so, I cannot imagine that anything of that sort will be implemented. Certainly there is nothing like that on the PTR, and Blizzard have not hinted at implementing anything like that.
The changes that you want to be concerned about are:
Sockets on rings and amulets will become more desirable thanks to the introduction of legendary gems which can only be put in rings and amulets
Sockets on weapons will become less desirable thanks to the introduction of Ramaldini's Gift which will allow you to add a socket to a socketless weapon without using one of its primary affix pool.
Ok, so if I had previously picked up a Thunderfury ( with socket ) and re-rolled the damage affix, Ramaldini's Gift would be useless in this case as I cannot have two sockets in the TF. If instead I had originally picked up a Thunderfury with no socket and I re-rolled Heal 8000 HP per hit into a socket, then Ramaldini's Gift would be great as I can reroll the socket to some other non-socket affix then use the gift to add back a socket.
Would it not be better to make Ramaldini's Gift add a extra affix to the item ( an affix that may or may not be socket but can definitely be rolled into a socket if the user chooses ) ? I am all for new features only if they are consistent and benefit everyone rather than some. As it is, Ramaldini'sGift will make the unfortunate become the fortunate, and the fortunate become the unfortunate. Its very bad design if you ask me and will likely be a gripe of many people.

There will be so many item changes coming in that for the most part you could be looking at replacing most of your gear anyway. Some of the new affixes are amazing. Yeah Ramalandi's Gift is going to make previous "guaranteed socket" legendary weapons less flexable; but it certainly won't be the end of times. You will find more gear, most of it will be better; some of it won't.

I think that's the point.
Your first weapon, where you re-rolled the damage affix into a socket, is now suboptimal. The second weapon is more optimal. But I think the difference between the two will be much, much less than the current difference between a socketed and socketless weapon.
Making Ramaldini's add another affix which can be rerolled into a socket is pointless. There is literally no point it existing. It would leave things in the exact state they are in now - a weapon which randomly rolls a socket (either originally or via Ramaldini's random affix) is usable. One which doesn't is useless until the RNG gods smile on you and you successfully enchant one of the affixes into a socket.
That's exactly the game design they're trying to remove!!

Yeah, best way to look at it, ignoring my personal opinion on Ramalandi's Gift, is that we have a "partial reset" on jewelery and weapons.
The legendary gems and the better flexibility on weapons (let's face it, one of the reasons TF was so good was guaranteed socket) may actually help achieve more diversity which will open up opportunities to use some of the legendaries that have been clogging our bank.
The new legendary properties on previous "legendary stat sticks" may also contribute to some more diversity in gear.
At least for non-GR play. For GR play I fully expect 1-3 acceptable builds per class and the rest written off as suboptimal.
