I logged onto the site while at work today. I normally leave the site up throughout the day and just pop over to see what is going on in the community from time to time. Today I've been swamped with this ad continually repeating itself with very loud audio relative to the other sounds levels on my computer.
It almost got me into trouble while on a phone meeting.
Is there any way you can default the ads to being mute so that they do not continually interrupt? If not, I am going to have to avoid DiabloFans.com while at work.
I can't use AdBlock and I can't use any other browser on this computer. It is a work computer and we have a very strict policy about what software we are allowed to install.
I guess the problem is that, imho, no site should have any ads that automatically play sounds just from visiting a page. If you are watching a video or activating some type of media, I can understand having a video/audio ad prior to playing the requested media because the user is expecting to activate some type of sound. However, if my only goal is to leave a page dormant in the background or just casually read some posts, no ads should have any audio of any sort.
I have to leave my sound on for my computer because of alerts and the fact I use a soft-phone and need to hear the phone ring. If I am going to get a set of cycling ads, some of which include audio, I can't spend as much time on the site.
For the record, this just started for me today. I spend lots of time on diablofans.com and never had this issue before.
I just wanted to bring it up because I love this community and don't want to be pushed away for the 8 hours or so that I am at work each day.
Has anyone else recently started getting ads with audio that automatically begin to play?
I've seen comicstrips with cartoon people sitting in public library and surfing when pop-ups like "Free Nude Girls" appear and says it out loud. I thought it was funny! But I didnt think about people that actually are locked.
My best advice is to check Dfans after-work or when your not on the phone (?). Or, keep the sound low.
And I have seen ads with music and people talking, those are the reason for my adblock today.
You could just mute your browser. How easy it is, will depend on your OS. For example, Windows 7 has by default separate sound controls for each running program (actually one of the most useful features that I'm missing from OSX!). I guess also each browser has some under-the-hood setting to disable all the sounds.
This is as good a place as any to ask. Does blocking adds decrease revenue? As in, does blocking adds not PLAY the adds, e.g. they skip an impression, or are they just hidden and ignored for the sake of goodness? As I've researched a bit and can't find a satisfying answer.
And it's a very good question. A lot of sites would be loosing a lot of money. Wowhead seems particularly unhappy about it and is what prompted me to snoop around a bit.
