I've had breaks.. I still have some old characters left.. but now the oldest only from 1.09 all pre-lod ones got expired.
When the game was released I played straight up to 1.09 or something.. then I was 1 year at army and went on a break. Kept logging on my chars every now and then from my brothers computer. Then I came back and played a while but then I got bored of it and especially LOD.. there has been many times I've quit LOD but still played classic. In 2004 came Wow which really ended my D2 but I still logged to keep my chars up.. when 1.10 came I went and made a few classic hc characters for the new ladder but after that I've only played now in season 5 if we don't count 1 80 character in some season.
Community sucks now, can't find anyone to do anything with really. I don't want to look for someone to run act 3 with for 30 minutes.
If I wanted to wait 30 minutes to do something I'd just raid on WoW.
Of course I could run it solo but that would defeat the point of playing online.
That is *SO* true. The only thing I blame WoW for is that when it got out, Diablo 'community' became leftover kids who didn't want to switch to WoW because of the fees (mostly). Basically, I would just focus on playing alone and attempting an occasional trade, if only it had more content. I feel like I've finished the game for 10000 times already, and there's really not much to it. I already tried all builds I wanted to try, and it all comes down to an extremely repetitive grind. I started a Bowzon last night and while it's interesting to attempt something new, I just can't make myself go through all the same things over and over and over again.... If only there was another expansion that added the sixt act, or perhaps the random quest system they are promising for D3...
But the worst part is the people you play with. It's really the worst scum you would expect in an online game. I must say one of the stronger sides of WoW is its amazing community. Anyday, you could give your expensive materials and a wad of gold to a perfect stranger, and you will get your service or if it was some misunderstanding, you will get your money/items back. If you accidentaly drop an item on the ground in a crowded game in D2, boom it's gone forever. You think that's fun? No, it's lame and pathetic.
Another thing was lack of PvP. Skill had no play what-so-ever in player encounters. Overgeared player in WoW will not win just because he is overgeared, if you have skill to take him down. In D2, if the other guy is not overgeared, he won't even bother PvPing with you. Or if he's not at least 40 levels higher than you are. Not to mention that D2 had 0% focus on balance or any type of official support for PvP. It's another great prospect to look forward in D3. Gameplay seems to be more skill-driven, and they are promising true PvP support as an essential feature of the game. We will see what comes out of it.
Finally, it's the high runewords added in the latest relevant patch that literally ruined everything. I don't think this needs explanation.

Well actually many of my oldschool friends from before LOD times quit playing already before WoW because the game got too easy and challenges ran out and more and more cheats arrived. And for many that didn't quit before that, who hoped for better times in D2 maybe in some patch just got the final blow to leave the broken game behind and move on.
But I agree, the community sucks.. but sometimes at least in hardcore you find really nice guys but problem there is tppk that made everyone sceptic to party.
The first time I quit D2 was from the 1.10 patch. I had many characters built that had been so utterly nerfed, that they were beyond salvation. I just up and quit then... as I didn't want to roll another character after having 7 90+'s
I wish Blizzard would have allowed us to reallocate our skills after that one.
I am now playing again, the next time I quit it will be because D3 came out ...or I died waiting for it...
