I have this problem where if i minimize and then restore my window, the colors on my screen get all psychedelic to the point where it's impossible to see a thing. This also happens after evey cinematic. So every time i complete an act, i am forced to leave the game and restart.
I tend to talk to people on the instant messenger often, so the fact that i can not minimize the window and return to the game without losing my picture is incredibly frustrating.
For the longest time I have had this problem, but I have pretty much ignored it and put up with it. I wonder if I run Diablo in a window like some people have been talking about in other threads would help. The next problem is that the native resolution of my computer is 1900 by 1200 resolution. I dont have a problem dropping the resolution though if i were to play the game in window mode so the window could look bigger. Also, my computer absolutely HATES diablo one, i cannot play the game and see anything. The screen always looks psychedellic no matter WHAT I do. The alt tab trick doesnt work.
So first question: How does one play diablo in window mode? The game starts by default in full screen and when i minimize the window and right click the icon, there is no option to just "restore" the window to just run in a window.
In the end I would love to just get rid of the color problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks a lot in advance.
XP has been pretty good for both the Diablo games for me even when hitting the Windows key and exiting to Windows, Vista however might cause some issues. The minimize issue has to do with the game reducing your monitor down to 640x480 or 800x600 and I believe running in fewer colors (don't recall the exact number) but hitting the Windows button will drop you into Windows while the game is still in trying to keep your graphics contained to these settings.
Running Diablo 1 is fine also on XP and even (server 2003 LOL!) but if you have Vista you may need to change the compatibility mode to Windows 98 mode. Also you might need to turn off security nag's by elevating your privileges to admin, hat is a big culprit many times for a great many little things in Vista.
Thanks so much for your response, I greatly appreciate it. Prior to this i was running on the xp compatibility mode. Then i dropped it down to 98 compatibility mode and still had the same problem. Any other ideas by chance?
Play with those options a bit like the run in 640x480 resolution check box, if I recall the first diablo wanted to have access that Vista didn't care for. You may need to run in elevated mode. If you still get the "are you sure you really want to do this" nag screens then it's still turned on, I have cured a thousand problems by just turning that damn thing off.
To turn off UAC
1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, click User Accounts.
3. In the User Accounts window, click User Accounts.
4. In the User Accounts tasks window, click Turn User Account Control on or off.
5. If UAC is currently configured in Admin Approval Mode, the User Account Control message appears. Click Continue.
6. Clear the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box, and then click OK.
7. Click Restart Now to apply the change right away, or click Restart Later and close the User Accounts tasks window.
You cannot disable Admin Approval Mode on Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, or Windows Vista Home Premium because secpol.msc is not included.
To disable Admin Approval Mode
1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click Run, type secpol.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue..
3. From the Local Security Settings console tree, double-click Local Policies, and then double-click Security Options.
4. Scroll down and double-click User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode.
5. Select the Disabled option, and then click OK.
6. Close the Local Security Settings window.
That was a really good idea. I went ahaid and turned off the user account control. Unfortionately, my computer is still deciding to be a real pain in the booots.

Did you drop your screen colors down to the lowest level? The closer to 256 colors you can get the better off you are.
Duff man rulz!
BTW in the game directory Diablo II run the D2VidTst.exe, that tests your video, it might actually reveal something useful. OH, almost forgot, are you running the 64 bit version of Windows 7? If so you may need to make sure you are running it 32 bit compatible mode as well. That should also be a right click option, at least it is in Server 2003 and 2008.
Okay ill use the D2VidTst.exe and c what happens. Nope just the 32 bit
Update: Okay so it recommends that i use the 3d option. Back when i was using vista, i remember having probs with the 3d option so i went to the 2d option and it worked a lot better.
Last thing I can think of at this point is to check the event logs to see if Windows is screaming about anything. Go to Start, Run, and type eventvwr and hit Enter. Note the time on the PC and then launch the crashing Diablo 2 app. Close it ASAP and then go back to the event viewer and in Application and System events (on left) select them, hit F5 to refresh them, look at the time stamps around the time you launched Diablo 2.
Look for red error's and yellow warnings, hopefully there will b a number of them. Look at the events and read the descriptions, it should hopefully say something useful. Then in google search for the EventID and whatever word in the description that might stand out google.
Origionally, I had problems with 3D mode in diablo because i had a dismal fps rate, ie less than 7 fps which made for frusrtating game play. So i switched to the 2D mode which drastically improved the fps but caused the color/screen probs i was having.
I figured out that by actually disabling the compatibility mode altogether and running the game in 3d mode, while checking the followig boxes in the combatibility tab gave me around 8 to 15 fps which is actually still dismal but way more playable than before becasue i no longer have the picture issues.
*Disable desktop composition
*Disable display scalinng on high DpI settings
*Run this program as an administrator.
In windows vista and windows 7, the processor no longer is responsible for showing the graphics, the vid card is. I think this took a tole when jumping into compatibility mode in either windows vista or 7.
This is not to say im not interested in pushing at least 5 more fps in the game though.
Any ideas on how to push my nvidia quatro nvs120m a little harder?
whats funny is that if you go to nvidia's web site for drivers on the quarto nvs 120m video card, it claims it doesnt even have a BETA version driver for
windows vista!!!! (or windows 7)
I have the windows vista drivers provided by dell. The video structure of windows 7 remains unchanged from windows vista... however i have had these problems since i upgraded to windows vista, but worked fine on windows xp i believe.

OMG i hate this! the only way i can think to fix this is to go back to windows xp. but that is stupid.
Update: the 3d option is horrible. I get 2 frames per second when i turn the auto map on. thats stupid. then i went back to the 2d mode again and simply could not see a thing. J Tap dancing C!
