With runes I think each difficulty should drop level appropriate runes for that difficulty, along with bosses in each difficulty dropping level appropriate gear for that difficulty. I.E. Baal in hell should never ever drop fucking blue gear for a level 20 character.
The problem is the game was too flawed from birth. I do however think that making gear easier to obtain will leave dupers with nothing to do really. Mainly though I really disagree with people who think that only the most hardcore grinders should have good gear, seriously guys this is a hack and slash game. Go play everquest if you want that kind of play environment. Also it is not like this game requires "real" skill. WoW and EQ are way harder in the end game and for some reason it is still easier to gear up in those games then this one, at least gear up in a legit way...
ok wow doesnt have these problems mainly because millions of people are spending 15 bucks a month on a game that is constantly getting updates and patches and expansions... there is no money pool to fix d2... and i think a lvl 80 char in hell with 300 mf should get better items than a char lvl 99 in hell with no mf... lvl favoritism just makes it easier... and we dont want easy... its easy enough with duping... thats why wow has fewer problems also... monitoring servers and no duping... you dont want runewords easier to make... they are too easy to make is the problem... everybody has them... the point was to make shit harder to get so you dont have a million people with enigma hoto ebotd coh cta etc etc etc...
I haven't read all the posts beyond this point, but I agree completely with what has been said here. keeping mf is a must. Even with high mf gear if you look thru mf calculators you will see the odds of finding certain items is still extremely high. So if somebody decides they want to put in some legit hours and mf then they deserve to at least have slightly better odds of finding items. There is nothing forcing anyone to mf.
The reason why the economy is like it is has nothing to do with mfing. It's all to do with duping and boting, simple as that. I also like the idea of runes in theory. In theory like gamma11 said they are suppose to be extremely rare, so only the truely godly, perhaps you can call them lucky, player has an enigma etc etc. Not every single player. When I think about it duping & botting is the reason why the stat point system has become obsolete aswell. Because everyone can easily get enigmas and annis etc they don't need to put stats in strenght etc so it just goes straight into vitality. However if duping and boting never existed, then people would still be forced to put points in strenght and dex to equip certain items, at least on their first chars while they're still finding items they would.
Saying that runewords are easy to make is an oversimplification. I don't know how much time it took me to get all my runes for the infinity runewords! And I haven't even found my 4 OS eth CA or 4 OS eth CV to go with the infinity runeword. So most of the really usefull runewords are still hard to get! I think the problem is that the stats given to some of the runewords are ridiculously high for the runes you use to make them.
I also think that duping as a major role to play in the number of high runewords in circulation over battle.net. That duping hack has been a plague ever since it first entered the game and it ruined the game economy as well as the fun of trading. Each time I trade an item for a rune, that rune ended up as being a dupe! I lost 3 bers and a Jah to these bastards, because of the server dupe scans. Since then I'm limited in my trading options, item for item, no runes unless i'm about to use it. Which is pretty lame if you ask me!

its not really an oversimplification... the other day i traded my visionary circlet (pally skills, attack rating based on level, dr etc) for 32 hrs... i had the essentials to make infinity if i wanted to.... instead i traded them for items... but really... its easy to get runes and shit...
Let me break down how WoW's loot system worked b/c a lot of you guys sound like you've never played the game and are making speculations w/o the facts.
every mob (monster) has a chance to drop a specific set of items. Here is a link to a WoW database website which gives the list for various mobs (monsters) of different levels and from different areas.
Now if you visited the links you noticed the item level of the available loot went up as well. This was done on purpose as lower level characters were not able to participate in the higher level fights (level restriction on zone/dungeon). Also it made it impossible for players to fight any regular mob (monster) much higher level to them b/c of a fantastic thing called "crushing blow"... this made the bad guys do like 10 times damage to anyone 4 levels lower them them.
This is something that is NOT based on Character level but a static pool that is randomly chosen from. And I think it should be this way. If I want a certain item I should know who drops it and if I want another it should be off a different mob with a static chance unaffected by any magical property.

You never would have gotten 32 Hrs for anything in the game if duping did not exist....
thats not what im saying. he said i oversimplified how easy runewords were to make... i proved its not oversimplified seeing as how i got 32 hrs for one items.
and there is no "server dupe scan" each item is tagged with a numerical code when you find it... when you dupe it... you make the same item that has the same coding... battlenet identifies the identical coding and destroys one or both of the items upon entrance or exit from a game. the only scan they actually run is ruststorm... that looks for modders and bots.
why should i be excluded from a fight that a bunch of lvl 50 tauren are in because im lvl 47?
You are not excluded. You just have to be careful because of crushing blow. The fact of the matter is the WoW loot system is better. If it was implemented into D2 the game would become more enjoyable to play. It is that simple.
well i tried playing wow for 4 months... it was cool to see new chars... tauren, undead, dwarves... the loot and pvm sucked... everyone told me it was because i didnt get to raid etc etc etc... well... why do i want to play a game that sucks for the first 70 lvls...
