I currently have a lvl 65 Trapsin with an act 2 nightmare merc. Just to preface this, I do not have access to the best rune words for weapons, armor, etc. at the moment. I'm running into a brick wall with immunities even in act 1 where my lightning and fire sentries are useless, and my merc and shadow warrior get eaten alive, and chews up 30k+ gold a pop to revive him. Even with kiting and potion healing the merc, he still gets destroyed and I'm running out of gold.
Anyhow, I could really use some suggestions on how to get over this hump and make some progress. I've been saving all the rare runes I can get my hands on, but at this moment, it's just not enough.
I wrote down a list of runes stocked in my stash, and I noticed that I lack all the rare ones to make an Infinity or an Enigma for my merc, or anything worthwhile for myself.
I've been doing Baal runs on Nightmare a couple times the last few nights, but all the drops have been disappointing. It's been so bad that if it's not good enough for an alt, I've been selling it to try and raise my gold savings.
As soon as I get back online with my Trapsin, I'll make a list of my gear and check back in here. I don't have anything awesome, but it's been enough to get through Nightmare, for what that's worth. I appreciate the advice.
I haven't re-spec'd any points yet, but I went to max out the lightning tree, and I'm up to 14 points into death sentry. I have 1 point in the other tree for shadow warrior. I know it's not really needed, but it's been ok for leveling. I only started putting a couple points into the fire sentries to try and help with the lightning immunities. I did it because I don't have any items/runewords to deal with it, and my merc was getting destroyed.
Once I can get my hands on +skill charms, gear, etc., I'll do my first re-spec. I did 3 Baal runs last night, and it only resulted in crappy items and a few common runes.
PS: werent you the guy that has complained about D3 being too easy? just picture Inferno mode now that youve played D2 hell
Nope, I never complain about stuff like that. I'll only jokingly complain about not being in beta and dying for the game's release. I never took the time to be thorough with D2 like I am now, so I'm actually at a point now where I'm seeking outside help and advice from people who have farmed it time and time again.
I look forward to D3 and being thorough from day 1, so I can be a resource at an Inferno level of difficulty like a lot of you guys are for D2.
EDIT- Thanks for all the help everyone. I'm trying to rep you for the help, but the forums aren't letting me!
How would you guys handle re-spec'ing in this situation? Should I re-spec to max out everything in the lightning tree once, and then re-spec in the future when I get the appropriate charms/gear to hit 20 for each skill in the standard build?
It looks something like this, but it's not 100% accurate. I could have sworn I have more points in shock web, but I know that charged bolt and lightning sentry are currently maxxed out. I also have more points in fire blast, but I don't know what I'm sacrificing. I won't be home from work for another 2 hours (lol), but I will update it with more accuracy later.
Thanks for your help. I'm going to burn a re-spec to get rid of the fire talents and max out fire blast, especially since the lightning immunities in Act 1 of Hell is the cause of my heartburn in the first place. I didn't think about Burst of Speed and Fade, will get them!
I re-spec'd last night and maxxed out fire blast and left the other fire talents alone, and it was a lot better. The ghost mobs that are lightning immune in Baal's chamber died fast in NM mode with fire blast and the rest of the runs were cake. I toyed with Hell last night and was able to kite Blood Raven around and kill her with every other zombie being lightning immune.
I got a Sol rune last night, so I can make an Insight for my merc, it's just finding a 4-socket polearm that is the next fun challenge.
EDIT- I also picked up fade last night and it worked nicely too. Thanks again.
I haven't played Diablo 2 in a while, but for Insight, the best way for me to find a polearm sockets was to roll them in my cube. Eth is the best ofc, but any 4 socketed polearm will allow you to have decent damage (Even if it's a NM version of it, which it probabl will be until you hit act 4-5 hell). Casters are at a big disadvantage in hell difficulty with all the immune monsters. My sorceress leveling for MF in hell would always run into immunity problems everywhere. The only solution to my problem was to gear my merc better. Especially if he's being a gold sink, go to a earler difficulty and MF a bit. Find some NM or low hell equipment off baal and then try moving up.
Best of luck

I got my assassin up to 73 now, but I've slowed down big time since SW:ToR. Been farming Baal, but the drops have been absolute crap. Tons of nice paladin weapons have dropped that I've been muling, but that's about it. I check every vendor and check every polearm drop praying for a 4 socket, but no luck yet.
