so something i have noticed is that when you down diablo or any other major boss for the first time you get a couple yellows and all is well. come nightmare i am excited about diablo kill and hoping for some sick yellow items. what do i get? 3 blues and a bunch of gems.
i just watched the "hardcore" Hell mode diablo kill and cant quite figure out how these gents didnt get yellow items for defeating an insane boss for their first time.
did Blizzard forget a line of code that reset boss initial kill loot table upon entering nightmare/hell/inferno? it would only make sense as these are feats of strength and equally epic gear rather than being able to kill a half decayed body in act one and get the best item in the game. something does not seem right.
random only goes so far. you get yellows for every first kill of the boss. after that the chance on getting rare items drops to nothing so that you dont sit there and farm the boss 500 times and get everything you hope and dream for. the game however should reset loot tables for the first kill in a new difficulty. this would make the achievement that much better. im almost done with hell mode and i see yellows dropping off of more regular mobs than bosses. if thats "working as intended" then i dunno why i bother past normal mode. if i kill a boss on nightmare/hell/inferno, i would like a decent yellow not some vendor blue. thanks blizzard.
I'm not sure if it doesn't start working until you hit 60, but there is the nephalem buff. If you kill the rares, champions, and such in each zone then the bosses should be dropping better loot. But from what I've seen it must be only once you hit 60 because I didn't change my build for all of an ACT and still got nothing.
But its not like this was a secret that just happened to come to light, we've known about this for months now.

Well, You could try skip all the bosses in normal, and just jump straight to act 4.
Farm the levels, without killing act bosses, and then try kill them in nightmare and have a look.
I havn't tested it myself but would be funny to know if its doable
You can't progress past an act without first killing the act boss.

Actually, my friend is on Act IV without having killed the Act III boss.
Perhaps he joined the game of someone who was finished with the act and just had the "Move to the next act" quest active?
It seems like it would be possible to skip every boss except for the final boss, and even then perhaps you can join after the boss has been slain but before the final quest is completed in order to move to the harder difficulties.
You only get a guaranteed rare and a guaranteed class item on first kills in Normal. This is designed to get you some gear you can use quickly. They decided to not give guaranteed better loot on first kills in Nightmare+ like they did in Diablo 2. a.k.a. Working as intended.
I think they should have let you have guaranteed loot from the first time you kill a boss in Nightmare/Hell/Inferno, since that helps you gear up like you did through Normal mode. It's a bit of a shame that they didn't.
I do wonder if you skip Normal mode bosses, if they'll guarantee-drop rares in the harder difficulties, though. Imagine a character that skips all the bosses through to Inferno mode, gets full Nephalem Valor and a full set of Magic Find gear, and then manages to kill the Skeleton King on Inferno for the "first time" - how much loot would that give? Haha.
