There is a lot of confusion about crafting and crafted items, although once you get it down its really a simple processes. Hopefully this thread will clear up some common misconceptions.
For the Beginners
Q. What are crafted items?
Quote from name="Arreat Summit" »
Crafted items are similar to rare items, but cannot be Gambled, dropped by Monsters or found in Chests. They can only be created with The Horadric Cube. Crafted Items are a form of Gambling for high level players or "hardcore" players. These serious players can have the ingredients and time to create a good Crafted Item. Crafted Items have the potential to be better than Rare Items and possibly certain Set or Unique Items.
Q. What kind of crafted Items can I make?
There are many different items you can craft, and they are divided into 4 categories.
Hit Power Items, Blood Items, Caster Items, and Safety Items. Each category has a different style of fixed properties.
Quote from Arreat Summit »
Each Crafted Item has 3-4 fixed properties. For example, there are some Crafted Items guaranteed to have from 5-10% Chance of Crushing Blow. Often the Fixed Properties are not available normally on Magic or Rare Items. It's also nice to be able to create an item knowing which fixed magical bonuses are going to always appear which is not the case with Magic or Rare Items.
On top of those fixed properties, a Crafted Item can have from 1-4 standard Rare and Magic Prefix and Suffixes. These are generated pretty much the same way as a Rare item.
Q. What do I need in order to craft an item?
All crafted items require 1 low rune, 1 Jewel, one Perfect Gem, and 1 Magical Item. Read the recipes for the exact formula.
Place the listed Ingredients in the Horadric Cube and Transmute them. The ingredients must be exact.
Q. Do the magical properties on the item or jewel go onto the crafted item? No, all of the initial attributes are removed from the item. Also it does not matter what jewel you use, be it a magic rare or unique jewel, it has no bases on what attributes appear on the crafted item.
For Advanced Players
Q. Do I need to be a certain level to craft?
The answer to this is yes, and no. You can craft at lvl1, but you will not get very desirable results. This is where crafting gets a little tricky. First let me abbreviate all the different types of levels so as not to confuse you too much.
clvl = your character level. -the result of your endless Baal runs.
ilvl = the item level. Believe it or not, every item in the game has it's own level. The ilvl is determined by a number of factors, but when you gamble it is very simple. Every item you gamble is randomly assigned an ilvl of clvl - 5 through clvl + 4. So if I gamble with my lvl89 sorc, every item will be randomly assigned an ilvl of 89 - 5 through 89 + 4 which equals ilvl84 through ilvl93.
qlvl = quality level. Every item also has a quality level. Don't worry about this too much just yet. I will go over it though just for the sake of it. Basically, if qlvl > ilvl, then ilvl =qlvl. On the item list at arreat summit the qlvl for every item is listed. Example: if you clickNormal Belts, you will see that sashes have a quality level of 3 and light belts have a quality level of 7. if you click onExceptional Beltsyou will see demon hide sashes have a qlvl36, and sharkskin belts have a qlvl39.
axlvl= affix level. an affix is basically a stat on the item. They are divided into prefixes and suffixes. Every affix in the game has its own level, depending on what item it spawns on. Here are the lists of prefixes and suffixes, their axlvls are in brackets next to the item types. Here are the "charged item suffixes" and "procing suffixes" these are generally not sought after.
alvl= the item's affix level. Basically, this determines what affixes can spawn on the item. This is determined by the following bit of code. An item with an alvl30 can only spawn affixes with an axlvl30 or lower.
Okay so now you should have a general understanding of what clvl, ilvl, qlvl, alvl, and axlvl are, or you're utterly confused and lost. (just post a question and i'll answer it, but finish reading the guide first.)
Now it gets even more complicated, but bare with me. Here are the rules for determining ilvl and alvl of crafted items. (1) ilvl = (1/2 clvl) + (1/2 ilvl)
The ilvl calculated in step(1) has to undergo two checks and possible modifications. First, ilvl is capped at 99: (2) if ilvl > 99 then ilvl = 99
Then qlvl and ilvl are compared. The higher number is used for further calculations: (3) if qlvl > ilvl then ilvl = qlvl
The final step is to determine the affix level. If the ilvl is smaller than 99 – (1/2 qlvl) then the affix level is ilvl – (1/2 qlvl). Otherwise the affix level is ilvl*2 – 99: (4) if ilvl < (99 – int(qlvl/2)= then affix level = ilvl - int(qlvl/2) else affix level = ilvl * 2 - 99.
Example:
Quote from Arreat Summit »
The Blood Weapon Recipe is used to craft a Berserker Axe (qlvl = 86) that was dropped by a monster in the Worldstone Tower in hell difficulty (ilvl = 85). The character used for crafting has level 78 (clvl = 78).
First, ilvl has to be calculated: ilvl = int(.5 * 78) + int(.5 * 85) = 39 + 42 = 81.
Then it's checked if the calculated ilvl is higher than 99. This is not the case, so ilvl remains 81. But qlvl 86 is higher than ilvl 81, so the ilvl is set to 86.
Finaly, the affix level can be determined: Since 86 is not smaller than (99 - int(86 / 2)) = 56 the affix level is ilvl * 2 - 99, in our example 86 * 2 - 99 = 73.
So all pre- and suffixes with a level up to 73 can spawn on the Crafted Item.

Note: Since the qlvl of amulets is always 1 the term int(qlvl/2) is always 0, so the affix level is effectively determined by ilvl, so affix level = crafted item ilvl = (1/2 clvl) + (1/2 magic item ilvl).
So, you are now probably asking, what does this all mean?!?! why do you need to know all this?!
Well lets, if you want to craft an amulet with +2 to necro skills and faster cast rate. If you use the caster amulet recipe you are guaranteed faster cast rate(5-10%). the affix for +2 necro skills has an axlvl90. This means you want the crafted item's ilvl to be 90 or greater. The ilvl = (1/2 clvl) + (1/2 magic item ilvl) so you would want to be lvl 93 to craft this amulet. This is because the lowest ilvl amulet you can gamble is 93 - 5, which = 88. plug this into the aforementioned equation and you get (1/2 (93)) + (1/2 (88)) = 90
Q. So what are profitable crafting recipes?
Imo these are the best crafting recipes: Blood Rings, Blood Amulets, Blood Gloves, Caster Amulets, Caster Belts, and Hit Power Gloves. Always craft with the exceptional and elite versions of the items for better defence, and more potion slots in belts.
Craft Amulets at lvl 93 like I said above.
Craft gloves no higher than lvl 62 to avoid the stupid Charged item suffixes. read SuperDave's Guide to Crafting Gloves.
For Crafting Rings, it depends on what you want. +20 str has a axlvl74, +20 dex has a axlvl74, 8%ll has a axlvl77, and 6%ml has a axlvl86. since blood rings have a guaranteed 1-3% life leech, the maximum life leech attainable is 11%.
Craft belts at a high level if you want + 30str (axlvl71). If you don't care about str then it doesn't really matter what level you craft belts at because mf, fhr, and +life all have fairly low axlvls.
Keep in mind: At ilvls 1-30, there's a 40% chance of 1 affix and a 20% chance each of 2, 3 or 4 affixes.
At ilvls 31-50, there's a 60% chance of 2 affixes and a 20% chance each of 3 or 4 affixes.
At ilvls 51-70, there's an 80% chance of 3 affixes and a 20% chance of 4 affixes.
At ilvls 71+, there's a 100% chance of 4 affixes. Q. That sounds like a lot of work! Is it even worth it?
Lets take a fairly popular unique amulet for sorcs, Mara's Kaleidoscope. It has: +2 To All Skills, All Resistances +20-30 (varies), +5 To All Attributes
Although ridiculously rare, the best possible Caster Amulet craft has the possibility of yielding: +2 to all sorc skills, all resist + 30, 20% Faster Cast Rate, 35% Magic Find, Regenerate Mana 10%, + 20 To Mana + 30 strength.
Hmp 93 to craft amus I've been doing them from 80 level already. Friends high level character crafted like 10 amus for me but none of them had any skills so I just did them around 80 level and getting at least +1 and +x to a skill tree ones
Best i've got so far was 24 str 24all res 39 in cold some mana and 9% cast etc.. too bad it didn't even have +1 Looking for +1 or +1-3 lightning amu for my sorc and maybe later a +2
Thanks for the info. I personally find it confusing as hell. I don't worry too much about all the ilvl, qlvl and such. I have a level 98 I use to do my crafting and as long as the item dropped in a decent area of hell. Usually act 3 or later. I have had mixed results. I made some really nice martial arts gloves as well as few really nice rings although I have had a ton more junk than goods. I should probably pay attention a little more as I might have better results when I try my hand at crafting ammys. I doubt I will though. As long as I see some progress after a few hundred tries, I'll keep at it. It is nice to know I have this info to fall back on if I do have questions that need answering.
