Just wondering if there's something I'm missing. Are they gambling for them? A friend (650ish plvl barb and dh) and I (550ish plvl barb) have yet to even see ONE drop. Whereas the vast majority of the 1000 people on leaderboard all have BOTH. Granted, we do each have an Ancient IK weapon (mine is bad his is awesome).
Obviously I'm jealous, but other than barb loot sharing and possibly gambling for them (a huge waste of shards imo), what is everyone doing to get these?
You're just really unlucky. Although, once you have every piece of armor upgraded to ancient then you can start gambling for weapons. Shards isn't really that hard to get this time around. You can run fast 40s and you'll hit your shard cap before you even know it.
Yea my cap is 1000, and I reach that from 0 in roughly 15 minutes running speed grifts with a really fast group (sub 3 minutes mostly).
Once you get your ancient armor pieces its worth spending on weapons, because why not.
BK weapons drop ALL the time, if I play a lot one day I get maybe 4-5.. and 1 in 8 is supposed to be ancient or so, so its not rare at all, especially if you loot share
Good luck getting your ancient BK, they will come soon!
Gambling for weapons is not a waste imo, I would even say the opposite.
Once you do have your set pieces, weapons (and offhand is used) give the biggest DPS upgrade, since they "double dip" from ancient: both the min-max and the mainstat increase by 30%. Other pieces only give you 1 30% upgrade for damage, but would give you double thoughness (vit and all res).
Since you don't need that much survivability for T6 and speedgrifts, and the limited item pool for non-weapons compared to the weapons, I would gamble for weapons as soon as I got the set pieces. The other pieces will drop pretty often while doing speedgrifts. By the time you have your ancient weapons, you probably have a close to full ancient set dropped.
Weapons are the hardest thing to get, and they just have to have to correct rolls. Since they are the base of your damage, every statpoint (mainly min-max) you miss on them, is multiplied so much, you want to have them perfect. The other pieces doesn't matter that much if they have "half way" rolls.
So, while it may seem a waste to gamble for weapons (higher cost, less items for your shards), you increase your chance to get the 1 (or 2) mandatory piece(s) by a lot. As you say, most people on the leaderboard have both of them ancient, showing this is (almost) mandatory. The other pieces are "nice to have".
PS: Paragon 600 HC wiz, never dropped a serpent sparker but managed to gamble an ancient one, gambling for it from the start. Same last season with my ancient torch on monk.
Got ancient BK fairly quickly. Was really surprised by that.
I've seen 2-3 of each of them drop as ancient as well, after the initial drops (Haven't been in any Loot-Share parties - all done solo or with a DH friend).
Didn't spend any shards on them at all (A waste on weapons, unless they are either holding you way back or your other items are top-notch).
Mine aren't "over-the-top", but they are fairly decent imo.
Furthest I've gotten in Grifts, are 50 though - so there's still room for improvements (Either in regards to items or me slacking)
I been pretty lucky on gear for the barb it's my luck on high level rift guardians, 55,56,57 I've been plagued by ghom, and blighter im definitely cursed in that respect.
I have never been up to plvl 1000 so I am not certain if this is true. But I believe the amount of exp you need going from plvl 999 to plvl 1000 equals to the exp you need going from plvl 1 to plvl 600. So those people on leader boards played alot more hours, no wonder they have better items.
I've gotten one ancient from Kadala the other came from a T6 pub. After two seasons of not gambling weps for it not being "worth it" and this season where I actually did gamble weps on my Barb/DH/Sader I'd say go for the gamble and let your ancient gear drop in group. After being on the ptr with no ancient wep but amazing ancient gear and being live with little ancient gear at the start of the season but having ancient weps the weps are way better than the gear.

Paragon lvl 999 = 10,263,575,160,000 xp
Paragon lvl 1000= 10,311,327,480,000 xp
Difference = 47,752,320,000 xp (47.752 billion)
Paragon lvl 244 = 47,826,360,000 total xp
Paragon lvl 600 = 623,979,480,000 total xp
So not quite paragon 600, off by around 13x
Not to prove you wrong or anything, forgive me but I just got curious myself
thanks TehZeuz for clarifying. Obviously what I said previously isn't true but I believe crying understands my point? guys at top of the leaderboard played way lot more so its obvious they have more ancient items.
