I'm thinking of rolling a DH for season 2. I'm therefore looking for a level 70 starter build and some gear suggestions. One would assume that only yellows and some craftables will be available in the beginning. Does anyone have a good level 70 pre M6 build? Thanks!
I would go with a build that enables you to run bounties most efficiently to get more experience and rift keys. For leveling without getting boosted, bounties are the best way to get experience compared to rifts or doing story quests (in my opinion). Try focussing on faster bounties like Skeleton King, Cellar in Old Ruins, Act 2 Maghda Area, Clear the Hell Rift or any bounty that needs to you clear a shrine.
For leveling you could use pretty much anything and runs bounties on Expert or Master difficulty. Torment 1 and above is not really worth it as it most likely takes too much time per mob.
Up to 70 you could use something like this. If you find any special legendaries, adjust your skills but apart from that I would focus on one main damage skill, lots of resource regeneration, Vault for speed and Rain of Vengeance for bosses and large mobs whenever the cooldown is over.
Once you hit 60, pick up a lot of yellow and blue items for materials, then craft some items if you have been lucky to find some plans. Running Act V bounties may reward you with a good crossbow. If you managed to get a number of rift keys, aim for about 400k dps and go for your first rifts on Torment 1. You could switch your skills to Rapid Fire for mor single target damage but Multishot should still work nicely. After a few rifts, spend some blood shards on items that are still crappy.
When you found your first few Trial Keys, go to Trials, immeadiately teleport to town and start the Grift at lvl1. If you are done before minute 12, teleport to town, do a quick bounty and come back right before the end. Spawn the guardian and progress to lvl 2. This way you wont skip too many grift levels and still get a lot of legendary gems.
thanks for this tips, especially phnyx for this detailed description.
I wonder how the actual progress goes... do I farm T1 rifts until I have M6? Do I actually do progress in GRifts before I have M6? isn't it better to focus purely on A1 bounties until I have royal grandeur? do I do this before or after M6 (=Rift) farming? what do spent my Blood shards on after I have at least some adequate 70 rares? quiver? armor slots where I want marauder on?
I played very casually before and the most I had was M2 and being able to farm T2 rifts. I try to do it at bit more focussed in S2, so any beginner tips what to farm first? because all at once is not possible^^
What I am saying is, there are several stages of progressing
a) Get the ring of royal grandeur. This is pretty much mandatory for every serious endgame build, because it just opens so much possibilities for gearing which wouldn't be available otherwise
b1) get Rare gear to be able to start torment
b2) Farm (at least) T1 (or whatever your current gear allows you to do in a reasonable time) to get 5 or 6 pieces of Marauder set.
c) farm Greater rifts on low level for gems and level gemsd) farm rifts on higher torment for more legendary and improvements to the gear
Now eventually I will have all of this. M5 + RoRG + a good weapon + the quiver for more sentries + other stuff that improves my build. at this point I should be able to farm higher torments and punctually improve every slot even further, and with each improvements, even higher greater rifts will be possible etc. The way when I GET to that point is clear, but the actual way TO that point can be taken on different approaches...
.
1) I could farm my damn ass off A1 normal bounties until I have the ring (which could be lucky and I get it fast, or it would be unlucky and I farm like hundreds of those bounty boxes until I get it), then go for Rare gear on normal (if I do not have it by that time anyways), then go for Torment 1 Rift farming (and spending bloodshards at the appropriate slots) until I have 5 Pieces of marauder, then get the gems, increase difficultiy until I also have the quiver. (a >= b > c >= d)
2) or I could first try to farm e.g. on expert or master until I have proper rare gear, then farm torment until I have M6, then farm higher torment A1 bounties for higher dropchance of the RoRG, then farm even higher torments for further gear improvements (b > c > a > d)
3) or I could screw the ring until I can farm T6 while being asleep, so the bounties have almost guaranteed legendaries. (b > c > d > a)

what is the general "best" strategy?
There's no reason to have a RoRG if you're looking for rares.
I'd say before you even go after the RoRG you need to do bounties and gather blacksmith plan's. When you have a few of these and resources to make something useful, and it becomes obvious that multiple craftable sets are going to be the next step, hopefully you are farming Act1 caches as far above "normal" as is possiblw without slowing yourself down
T1 and up offer increased chances for a "legendary cache only" to drop, T6 IS guarateed to drop "something" legendary, every time. The failure rate on normal is depressing. BUT if you need to grind, it's as good a place as any.
If you get Mara6 before you get a RoRG you're not at optimum potential but you're in great shape. If you kill a lot of time going after an RoRG and don't get any benefit from the pursuit and finally et it without Mara5, it's not really worth much, except to combine lesser craftable pieces until you get Mara5+
I wouldn't go after RoRG unless I had two pieces of something and wanted the three piece bonus. Of course none of this gives a nod to what might drop while pursuing the RoRG. So, level as quickly as you can, as high as you can on bounties, maybe a RoRG will drop before you even are looking for it. It works even if it's a lvl 42...:D
My plan is to hopefully get a Krem's belt early. These dropped like flies during S1. Maybe because it was an S1 exclusive. The speed boost makes everything go much faster. The skill will depend on whatever drops, early it seem like you will be stuck with the best quiver you find. The buffs on quivers either highly buff your primary or add generators to your secondary. The exception is the Kridershot. I got lucky last season, KShot dropped off Mathiel during my first run through the campaign. I'm not planning on that happening this season. Speaking of which, first thing I'm going to do is kill off Mathiel as soon as I get to Level 70 to get the Reaper's Wrap plan.
I actually like playing the campaign. You get the dumbest XP bonuses. Open a lore book, get XP. Every mission you get an XP bonus. Beside, it usually works out that you are leveled past 11 at the Skeleton King and you get a free legendary helm. Also slow moving zombies and skeletons in early act 1. You do have to watch out for elite quill demons. Stupid things are ranged and have about a 50 movement speed.
As far a weapons go, a two hander will probably crafted until I get an ancient. I'll replace after I get something that synergizes with a full build. Until I can get a couple pieces of a set, I don't think, I'll be looking too hard for an RRoG. Possibly though. Legendary Jewelry seem to be hard to get early and cost too much from Kadala. There are a couple of rings that drop off Horadric Caches, so it might be a place to go if nothing drops early. I don't know how many times I've cursed getting Squirt's amulet, but, if rolls with a socket, I'd be very happy early in the season. Until then, I'm rolling with socketed 6 stat yellows.
When Grift become readily available (it's going to be hard not having trial keys drop like they do in T6), I'll start upgrading gems. This is probably the quickest way to a useful affix on jewelry.
This is my plan upfront. Start at T6 and die a lot. Since the DH is all about kiting and using your range, (I'll be setting traps and rapid firing) this is workable. The bonus on Gold is helpful to get started, as you have to upgrade your crafters. I'll avoid elite mobs until I can craft a socketed weapon. Once I have a weapon with the biggest red gem I can afford, I'll back it down to something a bit more reasonable to be able to kill off elites. Gold is going to a problem. So I'm chasing down every goblin until I get into the vault to get a Boon of the Horder. After that, roll with the drops and craft Ashera's set once I get enough souls. I tend to think the set is cheap and has the best bonuses while you are struggling to stay alive without Paragon bonuses. You get 20% life on a 3-piece. Something that I notice while helping out a noob level up from scratch. SK's (broken) crown is now dropping early with the new Affix, so if this holds, this will be helpful with acquiring gems. So if you see a Level 70 DH on Sunday wearing Ashera's Vestments and a Level 13 crown in a T1 game, that'll be me. Fully upgraded gems on a chest and pants is 405 Marquis Gems, plus another 81 for your weapon. And Marquis don't start dropping until Level 61. With all the upgrades, I really want that Boon of the Hoarder early. Like all good plans, this will never work out perfectly. But it is a strategy.
As Diablo is a game using a lot of randomization its hard to give a best route.. it might sound a little too easy to say "it all depends" but its just true in the beginning =)
As you work your way up to lvl 70 your best bet are bounties. As with the story mode you do get good experience from every completed bounty and if you manage to get some fast bounties (you might want to skip Queen Aranae and the like) you still get a chance for a RoRG. But even if you dont, it doesnt break your progress completely.
I would do the following:
1-70: bounties only mainly in Act 1, if available some quick Act 2 quests like Miners Gold and everything in Acarnum, Act 4 Clear Hellrift (easy layout, quickly done, good chance for a cursed chest with extra exp)
60+: pick up most items for crafting materials, get a socketed helm for a marquise ruby
early 70: do 5-10 rifts for legendaries and possible trial keys
first trial key: start at Rift lvl 1, continue upwards for needed legendary gems and possible legendary items
you will likely have 1 or 2 set items by now (Marauders or something else) giving you a few nice bonuses
choose a difficulty for regular rifts that lets you clear quickly to acquire most blood shards per hour (if it takes you 30min to clear a T3 rift you might be better off with a 8min Master rift that provides fewer blood shards per rift but more per hour).. from all the earlier bounties you should have enough rift keys
Gamble at Kadala for your biggest improvements (if you have a crappy quiver, a new one will likely make you much stronger than a marauders chest piece if you already have a good chest armor). Dont forget that there are builds and sets beside the nowadays standard M6 =) Natalyas can be nice, Cains isnt too bad either, etc.. overall try to focus on improving dps while not neglecting toughness... the stronger you are, the faster you can clear T2, T3 and so on giving you higher drop chances with each step.. if you get bad luck at Kadala while spending hundreds and hundreds of shard on the one next Marauders piece, you could be better off just advancing through other items and going on higher torments / clearing T1 faster =)
And even without a RoRG you could do some great damage with a non-complete Marauders set to be able to do T2 or T3 easily
