Ok, so I have a few hundred hours into Barbarians (have 3 built, LQ, FC, and WW) and am looking to build some of my alts up. I started a Pet Doctor and am having an ok time with it, but decided I wanted to try Wizard as well. So here I am at level 70 with over 350 paragon and I started running rifts to grab some gear drops along with some gambling. I now have a mishmash of parts and pieces and dont know what direction to go in. I really enjoy the playstyle I have going, which is Arcane Orb - Frozen Orb, spamming that, then using Electrocute - Forked Lightning to build my pool back up. So far it's been a really fun style to play as, much more fun than my WD, and if I could get into the T6/ Grift 28 range, it would probably be more fun than my WW barb too. Link to my character...
So my question is, do I concentrate on Firebirds? Tal Rahsas? With some careful planning, I can run enough parts of both sets with a RRoG and get full bonuses of both sets, but Im pretty sure there is a much better combo out there than having Tal Rasha along with Firebirds. I also have one piece of Vyr gloves in the stash just in case. But basically at the moment Im kind of a lost sheep, aimlessly wandering around T3 and level 18 grfits wondering where do I go from here?
Well, thanks for the welcome. Im fine with staying at grift 30 and under. Right now my best character is my WW Barb that can run grift 28. My leapquake and furious charge arent optimized, so they arent even close to doing grift 25. MY WD does grift 18, so it's about tied with this current Wizard.
My list of characters and levels is like this...
WW Barb - gr28/T6
Pet Doctor - gr18/T5
Wizard - gr16/T4
Leapquake - T2
furious charge - T1
So any opinions on what set would best work with my choice of skills? I would think Tal Rashas would be pretty strong. If I can get a full set of Firebirds, then I will give it a shot, but I like the frozen orb spam right now.
If you are fine with staying below t4 with your wizard, I might suggest trying the builds built around Ray of Frost + Light of Grace source as well. While indeed nowhere near as effective as Firebird builds, it is neither as mainstream nor as demanding to your gear. Essentially, it depends only on one legendary, thus allowing to use whatever else you want for other slots. And if you somehow get ahold of Frostburns, the crowd control of "Ray of Frost" becomes nearly unparalleled.
Firebird builds themselves have a few variations. The high-grift Blizzard/Apocalypse version, the hardcore tank version that revolves around the Arcane Torrent with Flame Ward rune (requires Krelm's bracers to be truly effective) and a Disintegrate version. Pick the one you like the most.
if you want to have fun, i'd say go for talrasha's. it's a very flexible set with different variations.
vyr's all about archon so you burst things up and try to maximize archon mode.
Very helpful information guys. Im thinking Tal Rashas might be the best set for my current play style. Again, if I stumble upon a full set of FB, I will certainly try it out (or even make an alt for it)
Now heres a question on Tal Rashas... once you have a full set, do procs set off the meteors? Like right now Im using gem of toxin and a thunderfury, so casting frozen orb does cold damage, then poison damage from the toxin and the thunderfury procs lightning off the hit. Would that bring down 3 meteors on the single hit since its 3 elements hitting on one attack?
Thanks again for taking time to answer my questions, it can be pretty difficult to jump from one class to another, especially from melee to ranged like this.
from devestator I also have one piece of Vyr gloves in the stash just in case. But basically at the moment Im kind of a lost sheep, aimlessly wandering around T3 and level 18 grfits wondering where do I go from here?
Firebirds. That's all you need to know. Vyr's is horrible with Archon being so bad and Tals is sadly pretty badly designed.

Meteors don't proc from procs and wizard has no poison element. you have to actually use skills of different elements
Thanks again everyone, this is a much better section than say the crusaders. My brother asked a question about his crusader there and it took two days to get any kind of response.
I think most of this will come down to which set items I find first. If I get another 2 Firebirds, then I will switch everything up to try and run that. Also last night I found my first Furnace.... is it worth using it on this wizard or should I save it for a different character?
To add to the fun of your Tal build, you can try looking (praying) for a Grand Vizier staff, then use Arcane Dynamo passive + Bastions of Will ring set. Use Star Pact for your meteor rune and you should see some huge numbers.
EDIT: Note that the Star Pact proc of Tal will also 'consume' the same amount of Arcane Power as the one you casted but will not actually consume all your AP.
I'd like to clarify that it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. You can run all sorts of different builds in T6; many are viable, but if you want to chase high Greater Rift levels, your options shrink drastically the higher you go.
Firebird's is the cookie-cutter spec for high Greater Rifts.
If it's standard T6 runs, you can run any of the four elements, though fire still wins out in terms of power and mobility.
Especially if you can get a Boon of the Hoarder Gem with Goldwrap and Avarice Band combo going T6 becomes almost easy. So you can literally run almost any build you want as long as you can kill fast enough.
Personally I've played a Grand Vizier Thunder Crash build and a RimeHeart Glacial Spike build in T6 without the Boon of the Hoarder sillyness and been successful. Nothing flashy or superfast but very fun gameplay and good party support/buffs so you don't feel completely outclassed by the DH's and Pet/Jade Docs or any of the other end-game GRift builds. The meat of the builds is the skill choices but without some pretty rare pieces of gear T6 might be too tough.
Glad to hear you're interested in Wizards!!
