So I've found myself with a bit of a void in my average day's time i'm looking to fill. Really, it's not an introduction of new time but more of a realization that I have a fair amount of time I simply waste in a day that I could put toward something constructive, or semi-constructive at worst. I have one project i'm working on that is geared toward long term success. It's more of a business prospect then a hobby and I can only motivate myself to work on it periodically.
I'm a web developer by profession but i'm also lucky enough to enjoy what I do for a living enough to do it as a hobby to. The problem is I have very little in the way of motivation unless it's an idea that I really enjoy. I want to build an application of some sort and i'm thinking D3 would be a great platform for that, but i'm just not sure what, exactly, I want to do.
I'm not looking to build another fansite or forum - there are plenty of those (diablofans, being the best of course ) - but perhaps a tool or resource that the D3 community would enjoy using. Any ideas or suggestions no matter how silly, complex or simple they may be are welcome. I find that I have the ability to implement good ideas, but not really come up with them myself... <_<
Well, I don't have any idea per say off the top of my head. But, I would try asking around and see if there is something the D3 fans really want. I'm finding my self at a loss because you said you don't want to do a forum or a website. One more thing I'd like to ask is, do plan to make this for pre or post launch? I might think of something will a little direction to work with.
If you go with post launch I would say item and/or artisan resource. Alternatively, with the changes in stats and skill/traits a program that will allow people to compare gear with classes in mind such as putting the items slot and stats for both in and getting a display of what you would get out of the change.
Sorry if this isn't the kind of answer you were looking for.
I don't know if this out of your realm but what about a game that we can play on the forums. I have thought of something like mafia wars but diablo-themed. Players can build up and fight each other. Get new armor, weapons, and skills.

Or like Spartacus. That would be truly awesome. Choose from a starting demon/human and purchase new after winning some matches! i'd definitely play that. Alot!
1. Trait/Skill Calculator - A lot of people like to use this to plan out their character.
2. Game Database - Basically, a searchable database of everything in the game. Unique items, traits, skills, classes, quests, etc. Each entry allows comments for players to explain things in more detail (e.g. how to complete a quest).
3. Diablo character database - This is a site that watches your battle.net profile of your characters. Users can generate signatures for forums that display info about their character such as name, level, class, attribute values, etc.
Wowhead.com is the big example of calculator and game database. Search for WoW signature generator for lots of character database examples. You still have to wait a while until we get more information, but you could get a lot of the backend stuff done.
I think there are some great ideas here and it's definately a good start.
Overall I think a web based game isn't something i'm terribly interested in. No doubt it could be fun but it's likely the most complex idea out there. Beyond that the biggest problem is that something like that would probably require long-term support of the kind I likely don't have the time for. It's a good idea but I think a bit more involved then i'm looking for.
A trait/skill calculator isn't a bad idea either. The problem is that we still have very little in the knowledge of how the mechanics behind this work. I would need some concrete formulae and a pretty polished understanding of the mechanics to do something like this.
I'm really partial to the idea of some sort of "Diablo 3 Database". I know there is at least one, and likely other, sites out there that aim to do the same thing, but that really doesn't matter to me. I did a bit of quick searching to see if Battle.NET had some sort of public API (which it apparently doesn't yet) but that could be an option in the near future. Until then, however, I could easily do something like a "community database" where users could add/update various pieces of information - almost like an online cookbook or something. I'll have to think this over a bit more but it could easily accommodate everything from builds, skills & traits to item properties and recepies for crafting that people come across.
I realize it's not a new idea - but it's something that can keep me occupied for awhile and may prove to be useful the community when D3 comes out.
More ideas are appreciated, but i'm definitely leaning toward some sort of "shared database" system. Thoughts?

You have to parse the website to get the important information. This is how sc2ranks.com compiles the global SC2 ladder ranking. This can also be done for WoW characters. World first boss kill websites track when a character gets a unique boss drop item as proof that their guild killed the boss and at what time it was killed. I imagine Diablo 3 battle.net will have everyone's character on the website as well.

A character database isn't a bad idea, but it's going to be hard to make with all the randomness in the items.
