On blizzards diablo page it says that even the highest level of gem is level 1 required. I wonder if this will change when the game launches. I for one do not see them keeping it at such a low level requirement. I think that this could be abused later on in the game, especially for low level characters. Opinions?

While technically people could use them to lv new char, that would be a rather big waste of the gems(because the weapon is lv restricted, so low lv equipment would still be a POS with a very valuable gem wasted on it).

True but cant one of the Artisans take the gem out? This would make it not such a waste if it can be removed.
Would it matter if it was level 1 required? If I want to use a bunch of tier 4 gems in my level 1's amour, is that not my prerogative? I don't see why this would be a bad thing.

I haven't heard a mention of that yet, I know they are thinking about allowing the mystic to unbound runes, but I don't think they are planning to make gems unsocketable.
However if they do have gems being unsocketable it would be bad(however it doesn't make much sense to allow people to unsocket gems, as it would destroy the economy that gem hunting brings).
Sigh I really hope gems can't be removed, it would take the joy out of hunting for them.
But how many non hardcore mode players would start a new character after all the 10 slots are done.
I believe Jay or Bash stated that they intend Gems to be unsocketted since it will take a long time to get max tier in gems and many players are in themin-max mindset and would not bother to use a gem in a socket until it is at max setting. Plus it makes for a gold sink.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.
Imagine for a second starting a new character with a stash full of items and a number of level 15 gems to play around with. Starting an alt like that would be wicked fun, plowing through threats you struggled with way back when you started. I'd like that a lot, especially since you worked your butt off to get those items with your main. Why not let your other characters have a little fun when they start out?
Gems are intended to require level one. Bashiok said a while ago that this will encourage you to make twinks.
Official Blizzard Quote:
They don't have a level requirement so we do intend to see them used as a way to twink new characters, or allow people to buy into gemming up a bit earlier on if they have the gold.
Our current anticipation is that it will take the hardcore players quite a while before they start maxing out their gems, long enough that they won't see level 14 gems in all slots for all of their gear before we throw something new at them.
Thanks for that finding that quote... that is most interesting. Not sure I like it but interesting to say the least. Guess well have to see how it plays out after people start selling gems in the RMAH and high level gems become easier to aquire.

It's important to keep in mind that you can pay an artisan to remove the gems from an item. The last design I had heard of was that it was based on gem value, so as you socket higher level gems it becomes more expensive, but you'll almost certainly want to unsocket gems to level them up, or swap to new gear. This may cause some unique problems for low level (non-twink) characters attempting to buy high level gems and then being unable to remove them from the socket when they get a better piece of armor (because they can't afford it), but that may turn out to be an acceptable roadblock.
Ouch, the second quote sucks, I guess there goes my gem empire(they aren't gonna be worth much, that's for sure).

I did the math on it and it would take a LONG time to get your 1st Rank14 gem the proper way.
The equation to acquire your 1st Rank14 gem is simple,
Time = 3^(13-r)*(s+2)/a/t
Where,
r = Base gem Rank = 7
s = Number of sockets = 10 sockets
a = Gem acquire rate = 5 gems/hour
t = Average hours played per day = 4 hours/day
For our example,
Time for 1st Rank14 = 3^(13-7)*(10+2)/5/4 = 437.4 days =1.198 years
In other words, it will take 437.4 days at an average of 4 hours played per day to acquire 9*Rank13 gems and your first Rank14 gem.
The equation to acquire all Rank14 gems,
Time2 = 3^(14-r)*(s)/a/t
For our example,
Time2 = 3^(14-7)*10/5/4 = 1094 days = 2.996 years
It will take 2.996 years to acquire 10*Rank14 gems.
Those are all variables and you can get different times based on the values you put in, but the point is that it will take a LONG LONG time.

Not really. You still need like 19k gems to max it. Unsocketing gems will only increase value of semi-level gems.
Um yea, that's a lesser reason that also adds to why gems won't be worth anything, you need so many ******* gems to upgrade, that people wont be willing to pay much for individual gems.
It's clearly going the way of, you might as well hunt for them your self, because they aren't worth enough to warrant people selling.

Not sure why people do this outside boasting their elementary knowledge of algebra.
This formula assumes that level 1 gems are the only things that drop throughout the entirety of the game, which is silly because we all know it doesn't work like that.
