G'day all, i got into the diablo 3 beta a couple of weeks ago and have played through all the characters and maxed them out. I just wanted to ask a general question regarding the latency you experience during gameplay (not sure if this has already been discussed or anything, i apologize if it has already <3)
When playing the beta, what latency do you experience and does it effect your gameplay?
I play from Adelaide, SA and my lowest ping has been 260ish, Of course this has been in the afternoon evening when the other side of the world is asleep
If i play in the morning or too late at night, i experience ping at 350+, which is almost unplayable.
260 - 350 seems high mate, I dont have beta access but I am just thinking of my latency with Starcraft 2 etc. I usually sit around 180-200 in SC and WoW when I used to play it. So at 350 it is unplayable? Is that because of combat lag?
There has been latency problems for everyone since patch 15 was released. I live in Texas, but have been getting 200 ping fairly consistently. Prior to this patch I was usually around 60. There is still a chance your ping could come down before release.
They cant release it to Australians without a big improvement in latency otherwise it is just a waste of time, but I have no doubt it will be alot better in retail.
Gentleman, I can provide both perspectives being an Aussie who's recently moved to the US.
In the US I am getting about 120-140ms on a good day, and probably 200ms on a bad day. I put this solely down to the Beta, they'll be running a very small amount of servers.
In Aus, certainly 300+ms right now is to be expected in the Beta. As for SC2 pings, those servers are in Singapore. Diablo does not have a SEA/ANZ region.
Once Live hits, I totally expect all pings we're currently experiencing to be cut in half.
Everyone is playing on US based servers, that explains the latency. I believe it's been said that when the game is released there will be Aussie based servers for Oceania players to connect to. Besides, it's a beta, Blizz wants the servers stressed to see what the limitations are. I wouldn't assume the same situation will exist on May 15th
Best I've ever gotten was about 200m/s though that didn't last long
and yeah I'm with you mate, I do experience the best latency during the day. Though ever since the patch 15 release my latency has been a bit choppy....

Where have you read this because if true it is great news, I thought they said we have to connect to other regions like America, Asia or Europe? If Bioware can have servers her in Australia for SWTOR surely Blizzard can for a game as popular as Diablo 3.
It usually sits between 200-400 and I have no problems in that range. It feels like d2 when you played offline. anything above that and it starts feeling like d2 when you played online (swing at an enemy and watch it get hit after your animation has finished).
As for an aussie server? No, they have never said anything about it. There will be an asia region but I would rather play with my friends in america/canada, the lag ain't so bad.

This did cross my mind, i do understand its a beta and that the servers are not fully functional to the capacity they will be running at release. Hopefully you are correct and when 5million people connect at once, it should be able to handle everyone regardless of which part of the world they from
If I live in Australia/New Zealand/Southeast Asia, what server will I play Diablo III on?
Diablo III players in Australia, New Zealand, and Southeast Asia will, by default, connect to the Americas region. By connecting to this region, players will have a wider pool of people to play with and access to a more vibrant and active auction house marketplace. Further details on regional connection options and auction house functionality will be posted at www.diablo3.com prior to release.
I stand corrected. I had known about this, but thought I had read that aussies would have their own server..Either way, the latency shouldn't be as bad as the beta's latency is. Cheers!

I think this applies to Auction House only because I too remember reading about the beta servers being US only but retail will give every region localized servers. I could very well be wrong, but Aussies shouldn't give up hope.
(pardon my ignorance, I hope Aussie isn't an offensive term. If it is, I'll use the term Australian instead)

Oh pitiful shadow lost in the darkness,
Bringing torment and pain to others.
Your damned soul wallowing in your sin.
Perhaps... it is time to die.
300+ for Aussies? i have about 250-350 and i live in Holland , it's still playable yet i sometimes "teleport back" so to say... can get annoying at crowded places.
yeah i get the same, especially when I get knocked back from a champion, highly noticeable. And yes, your ping seems the same as what we get on a good day when the other side of the world is asleep
I have 240ms usually and the ping is fine because of the way they made the combat work. You can tell sometimes though, such as when items drop, they don't appear instantaneously.
Also, for some of the people that are experiencing this teleporting effect, it's called rubber banding and I don't believe it has anything to do with ping on these scales of <300ms.
Unfortunately for you gents down there they've yet to release any servers for WoW in Australia, so the outlook for Diablo III isn't too good on that front. Would be nice for all of you if they did though, I know my guild in WoW had a few Australians who played and their pings weren't stellar.
I thought Australians had fairly decent latency on Blizzard NA servers. I have a friend from Australia that sits at 150~ during EST mid-day! Or so he tells me
Ok. Big sweeping general reply to everything (coming from an Aussie):
1) There is no D3 Aussie server planned and I'm 95% sure there will never be one. As has been said, this never happened for WoW and if it's not happening for that (with their 110+ realms), then it's highly unlikely to ever happen for D3. Anything is possible, but this is not something to hold out hope for. I actually recall reading something a long time ago about Blizzard negotiating with Telstra (the largest internet provider in AU) about setting up WoW servers but Telstra called off the talks because they didn't agree to Blizzard's terms (I think Telstra wanted to have their name advertised or listed as sponsors where Blizz didn't want to do this). Possible rumour, but yeah... if Telstra aren't playing the game, it's unlikely any other ISP is going to be capable of doing so. Everything that can be said about server locality also relates to Auction House locality (which, due to our current high exchange rate, is good for us if we're buying stuff in the US, but bad if we're selling stuff... relatively speaking, anyway).
2) From Brisbane my normal nighttime ping is ~200ms on a very average ADSL2+ connection. Spikes bring it up to 350-600 but this is more a side-effect of Patch 14/15 rather than a connection issue. As has also been stated above, this is happening worldwide (even in the USA) and is not a regional issue. Ping was stable at 200ms in Patch 13 at least 95% of the time. My ping to MMOs on the US west coast has always hovered around 150-250ms (sometimes assisted by tunneling services) and has been fine for the majority of activities in those games (which, like D3, treat lag intelligently... more on that in a sec). The only time this can be a slight issue, as I imagine it will be in D3, is PvP, but it remains to be seen how that'll work out.
3) 200ms ping is absolutely fine to play the game without noticeable lag and for it to be a very enjoyable experience. This is not D2. 99% of my D2 playtime was single player or via local LAN due to the agony of the delay on Battle.net. This is not the case anymore. The new methods by which B.net validates client actions allows you to play as if you were doing so locally. In fact, all combat *is* processed locally and then verified by B.net afterwards. You'll see a few weird things, like monster loot dropping in a different place from where it died or slight delays in picking up items or similar things but, overall, any somewhat reasonable ping should be perfectly sufficient for an enjoyable experience. And, most importantly, combat will be fluid and responsive.
Any other AU Beta questions... feel free to ask, :).
Thanks for the overview Xariov!!
I just got off the beta just then and my ping was a steady 210ms. Really depends on the time on day.
I am aware that Telstra said no to hosting servers and thats why i was a tad worried. But like you said, most of the lag issues is hardly noticable unless the server is packed, which will hopefully be better on release!!
Thanks everyone for the input!

What does the rest of the country experience?
Maybe because they knew the latency would be bad and didn't want to deal with those complaints during beta testing.
I'd tell you what my experience was but my opt-in just hasn't been working.
