I think 4 man (with competent, skilled and geared players) will always be the best way to go. Since the monsters only get a 75% health increase per player added, adding a skilled player to the group should always net you faster killing. The faster something dies, the less dangerous it becomes. You also get the added benefit of group utility abilities, such as the buffs/debuffs/control other classes can provide.
That being said, a group of 2 would suffice. But if possible, go with as many as you can. However, I can't emphasize enough that they need to be highly skilled and geared to effectively contribute.

Oh pitiful shadow lost in the darkness,
Bringing torment and pain to others.
Your damned soul wallowing in your sin.
Perhaps... it is time to die.
Totally agree with the above especially in inferno. One weak link will just screw the rest as blizzard basically stated inferno is meant to be a group clearing difficulty. Honestly I have 3 other friends that i know and we played all the time together in D2, so benefitting from each others abilities is going to be necessary it seems. I am so looking forward to inferno, but i know that is atleast 3-4 months down the road. especially since i still need to work and pay bills lol!!!
Yeah 4 man does seem like the best way to go. BTW you guys know if they implemented any Party Kick option? In case someone AFKed out or is being disruptive. I played the open beta but I didn't check to see if there was any option to kick.
It totally depends on the players. If one of 4 is bad/not pulling his weight, it would be easier for the rest of the group to play without him.
Same goes for every number of players, if you work well together, It will be easier.
I can definitely see idiots running far from the group on a tombstone smashing trip and bringing back champion packs at the wrong times. i say no in general to pub games. An in-game voice chat could be somewhat useful though probably more problematic in terms of screaming nubs and the other bs involved in public voice channels.
I just searched the official forums and found someone who mentioned this.
There was an inactive "Vote Kick" option in early Beta. It probably will make a functional return in the retail release.
So it seems like Blizz does have it dormant until release. I plan on playing D3 with a friend so most likely we will open the game publicly to get a full group going. I've played D2 so I kinda know what to expect. You're gonna have your baddies just like in every other game.

There is no vote to kick in D3. I believe blizzard said that they will add it later on if enough people request it (or they deem it needed).
