Why call it "Old School", then take out everything that made vanilla what vanilla was, and put stuff from the expansion in?
I want a mode like patch 1.0, lvl 60, difficulty as it was, drop rate and items as they were, skills, ... even the auctionhouse: there is no leaderboard and nobody forces you to use AH.
Remember enraging elites? Or feeling OP in act 1 inferno, to get oneshot by that small green fly of the sandwasp at the start of act 2
I missed killing diablo by 1 hit the day before they nerfed the game. Still want to finish him on the hardest mode ever.
Think about people getting exited about a 500dps yellow 1H without mainstat, with a good stormshield being the dream <3
That's the thing, they don't have to "make" a mode for that. Just add "vanilla" to the drop down list in the battle.net, next to "PTR", and the 3 regions. Offer the vanilla client for download, and run the server software on their side. Didn't they do the same for wow, adding vanilla servers?
If everything is correct, they should have all software available already.
They can "introduce patches" to vanilla, moving from 1.0.0 to 1.0.8 (over 2 years, with the real patch time in between?), then migrate that server into current live and starting a new 1.0.0
They can make it a requirement to have ROS to get access to this mode (to get their sales up, in case they would be scared too many people would play this mode lol), and call it "Experience how the game grew into what it is now", maybe taking feedback about what people like/dislike in the evolution.
Example: 1.0.0 too hard vs 2.2 too easy, not enough/no good drops vs everything is useful and geared BIS in 1 week, ...
As my suggestion would go through every iteration (including ROS patches?), they might be able to find a sweetspot people want
I actually opened a ticket about this very same topic to "customer support" a few months ago.
It came back with:
First of all, thank you for submitting your suggestion, helping us improve our game and bringing this issue to our attention. I am afraid that issues of this nature are not to be addressed by the Game Masters, but by the Game Designers themselves. They have requested that all bugs are reported in the same location to make it easier to classify and track them. You can submit Diablo III bug reports on the official bug forum found here: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/5386229/ A US hero is required to post on the forum, more information is available here: https://battle.net/support/article/5500057 Thanks for taking the time to let the developers know about this issue though! It’s always great to see the community trying to improve the game for everyone. Best regards,
Left out names, was a polite mail
But: They know it's a suggestion, still ask me to post a bug report "for the devs", aka "so customer support doesn't look bad for closing this without any followup, the devs will do so as it's no a bug" (I work in customer support, know the tricks :p). Also, they send me over to the US forums, even showing how to make a US hero to post there, while my account is EU and the question is handled by "Blizzard Entertainment Europe".
So, as with many ideas, they just ignore them and move on
I keep hoping, I love some other people like this concept (in some way, anything would do for me tbh), and if enough people support it, who knows
I ask one of my friend what he tought about this idea and he simply said that, AH (Trading) was one of the main reason he was playing Vanilla because it was the community and that the vanilla gameplay was fun but it was lame to skip legendary for rare because they were better overall. I suggested him what if we keep RoS BUT we get less legendary and put an AH.
I think that's the main problem with the game. Vanilla was build around low drops and AH, RMAH destroyed this idea, but there was a grind: every item had value to someone, and gold did result in upgrades. (Because inbalance of 2b gold vs 250euro, and 100mil going as low as 1.5euro, good items only ended up on RMAH, destroying AH).
Legendaries were really what the name implied: the same thing as a yellow, with a special legendary affix, making them BIS for most slots (rings and amu were rare, only few HF rings were better), some slots "needed" specific legendaries (innas pants, lacuni for movement), but for the average player, their gear could have been better full rare than full legendary.
After 2 hours of lvl70, who even looks at their yellows these days? Maybe ring and amu, but legendaries are pure stat sticks "with an affix we don't care about since we want set pieces that have no affixes anyway".
On top of that, they "reduced" the amount of rolls (6primaries, where "double primaries with mainstat/vit" were possible, in vanilla, vs 4primaries and "2 secondaries as a bonus but we want dps so don't care"), coming with smart loot (no more frustration getting that perfect EF, then seing INT on your barb), and let you enchant 1 of those 4 (or 6 if you care) stats into something you really want (all those non crit mempo's would have been good!).
I think they took the one thing (too hard vanilla) and made it into the oposite (too easy ROS).
As my example: think back about all your worthless items in vanilla that were almost good, think about enchanting 1 stat on them, how many good items would you actually have had? All the other changes make the game worse IMHO.
And yes, trading was a huge part of the game. Social aspect, the trade itself, being able to help people build a char, give advice, do giveaways, tournaments for charity, ... Look at the stream, nobody watches D3 anymore, while it used to be among the top
Yeah I totally agree RiffSphere but the thing is will Blizzard ever listen to what the community want (HUGE CHANGES) ? Not simple item or spell changes.
They listened to what to community wanted when they launched 2.0
HUGE CHANGES! Sadly, happy people don't spam forums, unhappy people do, and they did build all he changes around the complaints (yes, I do complain now how bad to game is with easy drops and no AH, never made a post how I loved the AH back in the day, not blaming people, blaming blizzard for not seeing the impact).
In the end, there are only so many changes you can do in a hack-n-slash: damage of a skill, duration of the skill, range of the skill, cost of the skill, special affix of the skill (stun/pull/freeze/...), look of the skill. Show me any skill that I could not "make" out of, for example, the wizard blizzard skill with number tweaking.
Then you have monsters: healthpool, damage, own skill with %, own resistances and armor, different looks.
So, apart from looks, the only thing they can really change, is droprates and stats on items. Make it too low, and the game is too hard, pushing away the more casual player. Make it too easy, and people will leave, because of the same reason: they got in no-time to their current point, and it is close to impossible to find an upgrade. Apart from that upgrade being worthless as you clear highest difficulty already.
So, I'm all for the "too hard" way, with some form of trading. At least I could have fun with that ancient Wand of Woh a DH only friend got And, if it's really to hard, you can "double it", while you can never "half it", harm has been done by that time.
I'm saying they won't give access in one way or another to old content. By that I mean older versions of the game.
that's the sad part. but the question is why aren't they giving access to old content, some people liked it better back than and some now. why not put a server choice when you start the game saying wish patch you wanna play in ? That would be great, if one day you want to play vanilla Diablo 3 than here you go and if the next day you wanna play RoS here you go ! I don't think it would be that hard to make that possible I mean let's take an exemple on WoW private server, sometime they have 1 server of each expansion, etc.
While the game and server (kinda) worked fine in the past, they would have to maintain the client to work with new graphic cards and setups.
It would add 1 more server pool where they have to balance (add/remove servers depending what is being played - vanilla or ros). Running both services on the same hardware might be too hard, doubling the amount of servers they have now would be stupid.
Even if they would put something like "this is old content, NO IMPROVEMENTS will be done", they will still get some tickets on a daily base asking for tweaks/buffs/nerfs, in the end costing them money.
There will always be trolls, that will play the (considered bad) vanilla and try to make the game look bad, resulting them in loosing future sales, and thus money.
Any support ticket will have to start with "in what version do you have the problem", either costing them money to actively support the vanilla version, or giving them a bad name by not support a game they still offer.
I think, the best way for them to do this, is if the vanilla server software and client got "accidentally" leaked. If they make a small config file to enable/diable ah/rmah, and pick the "patch" you want, I'm pretty sure there will be some "private servers". Only downside with this, people will go through the code, find the inner workings of loot (loottable yes or no? special conditions or triggers? ...) that are probably still part of live, and exploit this, resulting in more work (and cost) again.
Maybe host private servers themselves, ask a monthly fee for access, and state they are not linked to blizzard in any way
Yeah I totally agree RiffSphere but the thing is will Blizzard ever listen to what the community want (HUGE CHANGES) ? Not simple item or spell changes.
lol, they listened to what the community wanted and made HUGE changes, and what did they get? You started a thread asking for a mode where all of those changes were undone.
Basically you spend most of your time dying to everything that moves in act 3, after hundreds of hours of farming and no drops your chars gear still sucks and then you quit playing Diablo 3 out of frustration/boredum. Sounds like an exciting game mode, items can drop but probably never will so you can play for 10 years and your character will still be shit.
I beat the game on Inferno pre-nerf and I always thought at the time that the gear design was crap, that the game was too punishing (because stuff that could kill you would kill you regardless of skill, you just had to outgear it). The bossfights were great but the rest was junk. Game is so much better now.
There was massive complaints with the drop rates and here you are, suggesting this mode, even without AH!!Guess you want to play 1000hours just to complete a set.
Yes, right now I got full geared on 2 character in 1 week, I mean what's the fun in that ? Yes the first week it is super exciting and all because you find upgrade but after that you need an ancient item to get an huge upgrade. At least that's what I think.
Did any of you even get past act1 inferno before 1.03 ? not trying to be rude, but does any of you know what you are asking for ? not like it will ever happen but does any of you ?
the game was fun because it was new and refreshing and all the exploration and builds and so on, the difficulty wasn't in the content, the difficulty was in the insanely high gear requirements to move from Act1 to Act2 and so on, it was horrible because you either had to use the AH or you would spend hundreds of hours grinding for NOTHING, no paragon, no progress, no drops, losing gold more than you pick up until you couldn't repair, can't craft gems because they were very expensive and you had no way of generating any gold, and to be honest most of the fans wouldn't want them wasting their time implementing this mode into the game and splitting the community even more.
Players have been asking for Vanilla/BC/Wotlk servers for so long and that is much easier to implement than this and it wouldn't affect the population or the players almost at all and it is not happening, doubt they will implement such a thing in diablo.
Just like another member mentioned before me, players were signing petitions and asking day and night to shut down the AH and the RMAH and asking for changes to the itemization from Vanilla and after just a year you forgot what kind of nightmare it was and started to ask for something so awefully done and poorly optimized and tested.
This is what I call Rose Tinted Glasses, take em off please.

Heres an idea, we have Hardcore/Softcore/Seasonal what about an Old School mode. ( This is mostly if you were a fan of the release )
-The difficulty would be normal/nightmare/hell/inferno instead of Normal to Torment 6
- The drop rate would be the same as when the was release
-No Auction house/ Real money auction house-All the item in the game right now would be in this mode (e.g. Marauder, etc) but super rare
And yeah that's pretty much it, if you have other ideas just post it on this thread ![/pre]

I agree on that, but you realy think blizzard would make a mode that is a copy of the release ?
I know it's illegal but if there was a client that was a single player version of diablo 3 release I would totally use it haha
I find it to easy right now, after only 1 week you are full build.
