Honestly... I dont beleive in UFOs
Its just too easy to manipulate images... So basically, it comes down to me trusting someone else with absolutely no valid proof (which I'm not going to do)
Edit- This thread should include crop circles and alien-abduction stories aswell
I believe in UFO's and aliens and all that shit for the same reason Silver does. During one of our classes a long time ago, our teacher was describing the universe and warping and all that stuff and he tried to show us how big the universe was so on his 36 foot long blackboard he put a tiny, barely noticable dot and said, "That's our galaxy"

The chance of there being life in the universe... possible (I personally beleive so)
The chance of there being intelligent life in the universe which has travelled many lightyears to Earth to study a primitive race by watching us from the clouds and occasionally anal probing us?
Here's a weird theory that i heard from someone i know. Earth is like Australia was to England, a penal colony and we were put here due to our primitive, barbaric behavior, and we pissed someone off. Then UFO's come here to check and make sure we aren't doing anything stupid such as blowing up the planet.
EDIT: NOTE, NOT MY THEORY!!!

I said terrestrial or otherwise, meaning it could be future timetraveling humans, millitary spycraft, or possibly another inteligent speicies living among us.
The universe is how big and i find it hard to believe that out of the sheer size we are the only things that lare living. Also what started the first living creatures? They had to come somewere either a higher power or aliens.
Why do i get the feeling my thread is gona come bite me in the ass?

If you ever meet a hafling and a hungry dragon you dont have to outrun the dragon, you only have to outrun the hafling.
Interesting topic and I have only been researching it for about 2 months. I can tell you categorically that there is a hell of a lot of complete BS in the field of UFO study. But I can also categorically tell you that any sane rational person will question their scepticism of UFO's when you eventually get to the core of the field in which truly stounding cases are meticulously documented and verified by numerous independent sources.
Previously I simply couldn't believe that aliens (which almost certainly exist somewhere) would come all the way to earth to do donuts and burnouts in crop fields and mutilate the local wildlife without making contact. Since then I have reappraised my logic in this.
It is possible for us (or certainly will be very shortly) to view distant planets and determine if their atmospheres have the right elements to support and indicate the presence of life. If you believe that we aren't the first civilisation and their are potentially more advanced races, then conceivably they might have known about life on Earth well before we appeared on the scene. If we found signs of life in another solar system, we would be trying to study it for sure; reasonably another alien race might be just as curious as us.
So potentially this planet has been known about for millions or hundreds of millions of years. The question is, can it be possible to travel faster than the speed of light - and I don't necessarily mean physically in a straight line from point A to point B. I would say our understanding of physics and the universe is rudimentary at best. There is so much we don't know. We can't see or explain 96% of the mass of the universe with anything other than a theory about dark matter.
So if it is possible to travel here then I would think it would be likely that they have/are studying us. And I consider it reasonable that they would be very interested and worried about our ability to send probes into space and our simultaneous desire to blow each other up. For me it is quite plausible that aliens have visited us and are very interested in the progress of our society.
I have found lots of evidence of it, just no definitive proof.

It is very long, about 2 hours, but you will start to understand wwhy many people take this field of study seriously whether you believe in aliens or not.
Thank you for your relavant post Shere. I belive that the government is using the ufo scandal to cover their recent technological advancments. But I also belive that Aliens were at one time in contact with our government. I belive there have been enough credible testimonials for me to say so.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An organic molecule has been spotted for the first time in the atmosphere of a planet outside our solar system, a key step toward possibly finding signs of life on a distant world, scientists said.
Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope found methane in the atmosphere of a planet called HD 189733b, which is about the size of Jupiter and is 63 light-years from Earth, they said in research published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.
The planet is not right, but the fact that they can already detect these molecules is a good indicator of the techology available to advanced civilisations.
they worded it article weirdly "methane molecule" is what it said. It obviously should be molecules. I still dont see how they could tell a methane molecule from a butane molecule at that range.
how do you detect a molecule thats 63 light years away?
Go research it... There is a logical scientific explanation behind the hypothesis's of distance planets atmospheric chemicals. Light refraction with different colours and 'red shift'
