Ok, i know I'm going to get flamed for this, but here me out (before laughing). Think of it as entertainment.
How about a Rathmian or Priest of Rathma class? This would be as they are in the books, not like the D2 Necro.
In the books, Mendeln, Zayl or Kara are more buff\spellcasters and stealth than the D2 necro. True, they summon, but not like an army. Most of their spells revolve around non-elemental magic by enchanting their bone daggers. They also do a good deal more fighting than the fairly fragile D2 necro.
Sooo....
- Dark, non-elemental caster. Think buffs, curses, and different variations on returning\redirecting magic damage. Non-direct damage. Teeth and Bone spear are only mentioned sparingly in the books and mostly as last resorts.
- Stealth with enchanted dagger, not just poison. I'm thinking stealthy assassin style 1 hit kills, sacrificing defense and health until sneaking through the mob and knocking of the big guys - then desperately building health off smaller kills via the new "orb" system.
- Blood\Summoning - (before you go all "there's no bodies" and the "WD does the summoning" on me - this would not be mass summoning like D2 - maybe 2 to 3 max per skill) I'm thinking again of the dagger as in the books. Blood is required. Upon a kill, the dagger inflicts a number of effects to a target. Shades, ghosts, skeletons, zombies, all the way up to full corporeal revives can be used, depending on the spell. some would be good fighters, some would be basically useful for reconnaisance, some would be utterly weak but release magic damage on death.
Ok, commence flaming: I like to provide something fun to laugh at...
-Mephisto's Lament-
Genius! Really?
Of course it is, so is clicking a mouse a million times to swing a sword over and over again at random pixelated monsters. The question is, would it be fun?
My thing is, I don't want to miss out on fun, storied characters, just in the name of novelty.
I have to say, with the advent of the Orb system, almost all of the old character ideas would have to be rebalanced or re-thought. Can you imagine how unbalanced some of the old characters would've been cutting through swaths of enemies with free health lying all over the place? That's what may really limit the summoning in the game, and admittedly it is probably a good thing from a balance perspective.

Sounds like the D2 necro to me.
BTW, Love the Pre-Duel Ante system in your sig - I'm for it!
Priests of Rathma are just straight up Necromancers. Necromancers are just what outsiders call them.
Yeah, I know that - that's why I used the name, heh. Just trying to keep up with the "MUST have everything NEW" vibe from Blizzard, while having my old familiar, fun gameplay. I guess I figure D2 was pretty good, and can't help but hope D3 will be too.
Hahahaha, for some reason I actually found that quite funny.
I dunno about this whole Rathmian idea, seems like a Necromancer to me. Necromancers, or "Priests of Rathma"'s abilities we're only altered in the book because I think it would be silly to have a main character summon an army of reanimated skeletons and be launching two bone spears a second. In order to place emphasis on their abilities and have the book not end in a six chapters they needed to tone down/alter character's powers.

Considering that this isnt very funny I must assume that you have taken offense to something I said, although I can't fathom how you could possibly find it offensive. I mean, I remember that quote from Fight Club...great movie, and at the time the quote made sense, but now after entering into one of the country's worst depressions of all time, and being locked into one of the nations worst wars of all times, when the US is probably on the verge of collapse...its quite ironic for you to still be using this as your sig, unless its intended to be so.

Hmm. So, you feel that the current war is worse than both world wars? Worse than Vietnam? Worse than the Civil War, where our enemies were our own brothers and fellow countrymen? That's interesting.
Anyway, since necromancers had nothing, or at least very little to do with any world wars (ya never know, maybe necromancers did it) i'll get back on topic here. I believe the necromancers basically ARE the priests of Rathma, just by a different name. The skills used in the books were a more "realistic," (if that term even applies for fantasy stuff) take on what the necromancer could do. I mean, Zayl used the Teeth skill in one of the books, but i don't think that implies that he was a "low level" or inexperienced necro, it just means that no one in real life stands around putting points into a skill tree, instead they actually have to learn how to do things.
When it comes to fiction based on games like this, you can't really blame them for skipping over stuff like stats. It would be silly to have him level up and stand around putting points into himself after beating a monster. I mean, should characters in Lord of the Rings roll dice before they attack something to see if they can hit it or not?

We are not even CLOSE to a depression. The Great Depression had a 25% unemployment rate while we're at a HISTORICAL LOW of 6%.
I know this isn't the place for politics but I can't let falsities to breathe :).

Ok, no more politics on this thread plz. In the mean time, I hate to say it, but this is just a retooled necromancer. It's time to let the Necro's go. They aren't coming back in any form, no matter how much you dress it up as something different. I liked the class, but let's see what's new ok.
I'm the only one that noticed that this class is not the same as a necro ?
This class have stealth, use daggers (please, don't tell me necros use daggers. . .), they are physical melee attackers, with some other suport skills.
wth this class have to do with heavy summoners like the necromancer ?
I kno that they both 've the same background. But the gameplay is totally different.
Due to the similarities with the WD (small summon groups, curses, poison) i guess this suggestion would fit the expansion.

Faded out her voice and soiled her name
And like marked pages in a diary
Everything seemed clean that is unstained
