What if you're exploring some dungeons with lots of low ceilings? Or even if you were in a serious melee someone would grab onto it. Same reason you'd wanna keep your hair short when fighting zombies.
Actually, the first thing i thought of when i looked at the helm was headbutt!
I don't really see the Wizard being the headbutting type. But no, its girth would impose more limitations than benefits. Practically that is. I'm sure it's a delight of enchantments otherwise.
damn think ill be playing with the female wizard just so i dont look like a fag. Put some bells on the end of those helmet spikes and you have a jester!!
Sorry guys, I just can't buy that cheap, flashy, childish design.
Imagine if you're a monster in a dungeon, and trip on a fighter dressed like that! I'd probably die, 'cause laughing my guts off I couldn't defend myself...
I don't think any armor is meant to be anything but functional. It might not be that cool looking, but the functionality of it might be nice, not to mention it may also add to skills. Like I said before, I like to see it in game play. It probably looks better than just as a pic.

How big are peoples heads from an isometric view? I almost feel like if the helmet wasn't that flashy you wouldn't easily be able to tell what it looked like at all.
Symmetry gets boring. Plus, this is 5/18ths in. Theres bound to be one thats your least favorite. And the outrageousness will be turned down quite a bit from the zoomed out isometric view. Probably to the point where it looks just flashy, not so out of place like some of you think it does. But this is a whole lot closer than we'll be playing at. So in just a few days we can find out what it looks like from that view.
The best items have to be super high-fantasy and flashy or else it would turn into a game where a lvl 99 pally can wear a brown rag that has some 9000 defense on it...
The thought that this is only 5 out of 18 (eighteen!) is actually mind-blowing. If they actually came up with 18 different, recognizable looks (that is, without uniques etc), it's no wonder we also get something like this.
Also tone down the ONE shoulder pad which I feel is retarded and should be mirrored on the otherside
I don't know. I think it's cool now that you can equip individual pauldrons on each shoulder. It's kind of cool looking the way the Necromancer was in his canon armor with the one shoulder having the tall spike on it. I like my characters not to be totally symmetrical looking.
Oh come on. It's not THAT bad is it? I guess being that it is flamboyant though is consistent with the background story behind the cocky Wizards. I guess it's a reason I don't like the Wizard class though. They just seem like a couple show off teens who are trying to look fabulous.
I hear ya, toma. I like the innovative ideas they're coming up with as well. But I would like something more in the realm of familiar. Something that really hearkens back to the original Diablo. I've been very supportive of the overall art direction and character design in D3. But I do hope for something a bit more classic looking.
The armor of this Wizard, while admittedly kind of cool looking, just seems a bit impractical in its own right. Or maybe there is just something excessive about it that reminds me a bit of the over the top kinds of armor you'd see in WoW.

I agree with Siaynoq. I've been waiting 8-9 years for this game. I understand that blizzard north left, and that these are mostly different developers, but try to keep it more traditional/classic looking. I just don't get that Gothic feeling that existed in the first two games (less so in D2). I think I read an interview recently that stated the end of the game looks nothing like the beginning, and isn't as 'pretty'. My only response is that I hope so.. and I can't wait to see it.

Yeah I think once they start showing end game stuff that's when were gonna start gettin real excited. I'm pretty confident that the game gets a lot darker. Instead of making it dark throughout the whole game, I like the idea of the progression from familiar normalness to places that you know you probably just should not be. It makes total sense that some places are worse than others they've probably just been showing us the places that aren't as bad.
Seriously, all helms in D2 looked different enough and the camre is basically the same. I also understand why the wiz will wear bigger helms. It's natural from the magic class archetype.
What i don't understand is why it is made of metal. Seriously, he looks like something from megaman... IF it was just a small circlet with a big cloth details i would understand...
Well I'm just saying that sometimes even the horned helms in D2 were hard to see, and would be harder to see in the better special effects of D3. And the wizard is intentionally flashy, and the best way to be flashy is with a big helm and shoulders, which are the biggest pieces you have. And its so early on in the game that it isn't something that should cause large concerns. Yes, you may disagree with this specific design, but its not something that should make you angry with the overall art direction all over again. We all saw how sweet that desert was. Don't try to say you aren't pumped for this game.

Dude, nobody's angry about art direction whatsoever(at least not in this thread). Just that the wizard's armor does not appeal to the taste of some people(like me).
It happens. And it's not like they've shown us all armors in the game either.
Anyway we are talking about armors and you bring in the desert? Designing an environment and char armor require different skills.
A desert will remain a desert you know- I mean if you want to make it look like that. But a wizard now, you can do a lot of stuffs with his appearance. You can make him look like a jester or a clown or a demon slayer.
Maybe that's how blizz wants to do things. You start with low tier armor making you look like a hopeless clown and then you progress to some badass gear.
exactly! the armors match the characters, not the other way around, as it was before. the game is evolving and i kinda like what i see so far. and it's not even the high level armor!
Actually, the first thing i thought of when i looked at the helm was headbutt!
those pointy parts stab into the enemy.
its super-effecctive
