Why would I waste time and harddrive space downloading bad material?
Well, the #1 reason why people DL is because game preferences differ and no one knows if a game is good until they get it. And since there is no renting, they download it. Then they delete it (I deleted a LOT of games, how much money would I lost trying out what I didn't like...), or they leave it be, or they buy it. That depends on the financial status of the person (mind you, some people simply can't afford stuff, so their pirating or not doesn't affect the game's sales all that much, on the contrary, they advertise the game), on their honesty, and how much they spend in multiplayer...
that the singleplayer of the game is cut if you don't pay extra bucks is kinda extremely fucked up when i'm thinking about it, i can't think of any game that has done that (let you pay full price to play a cut singleplayer game, doesn't matter if it has multiplayer)
All of this gets twisted in it's context because you can get additional updates for a fee after buying it.
If Hellgate was a regular sinlge-player game with multiplayer like D2, who would have complaiend? It wouldn't have mattered that the max lvl was 40, it wouldn't have mattered that there was no pvp-mode, or mightmare mode, or roleplaying mode, or more charcter slots, or anything of the previously metnioned (except for perhaps the friendlist and support; why would you have to pay for that?). There would have been no point of reference in such a situation, and people woulnd't have thought about it.
Then, in true classical style, there would have been an expansion with new monsters, new armor, new zones, new quests, new, new, new, and people would have to pay for it. OR, they could pay montly and get the same stuff.
I see no difference bewteen paying for regular updates or an expansion.
So, I am extremely interested in seeing what this game has to offer, and will pay if I find it good enough.

You left out that you are paying for the quality of the download too. Generally when you have single player games that can also be multiplayer, hacks and duped items can freely rome between the two. Having active customer service that can eliminate the illegitamet items is a huge plus.

Nothing wrong with it. You are gonna pay no matter what unless you illegally download every game you play. Its like going to a Casino and gambeling. Odds are always against the player, but if you consider it paying for entertainment you are getting what you payed for.

Because its exactly what I need.
Comeon, the people from the Diablo games.
I'm suspecting that this will be more fun and diablo like then whatever Blizzard is working on.
But the third project blizzard is working on, totally has me interested. So now I have to wait for both games to come out.
A new different franchise, but from the same people that gave me my fun and enjoyment before?
It could suck, or it could be fantastic.
Or the same Diablo series made not by the original team.
It could suck, or it could be the best thing ever.
We just have to wait.

Well what they are complaining about is the fact that they are making you pay the standard amount for a game that has only a partial single player.
It can be seen as a legitimate argument but look at all the games that don't have single player at all. Its the same thing. I would just view this game as any other game that has no single player at all.
In addition you are also getting the opinion of people that download games illegally and don't feel that they should pay anything to play a video game if they feel its bad. Really lame excuse especially with all the availiable renting companies available and demo's but ya whatever.

Its a bit like making a movie on a dvd and then decide to cut some important bits and let people pay each month for those bits that where cut.
Its not illigal but it isn't ethical either.
You mean like coming out with a movie on DVD and then 3 months later selling the collector's edition with extra added minutes and behind the scene's.

I can't think of any game that has done that (selling a game under the pretense its a single and multiplayer game but let the customer pay extra each month for the single and multiplayer, either make a singleplayer game and let the gamer pay for its multiplayer or only make a p2p game or only make a single player game with or without free multiplayer)
They are listing what the game includes before you purchase. There-for ethics are out the window because you should know before you purchase it. There are many other games out there that are limited in this fashion.
An example of un ethical practice would be Star Wars Galaxies for instance. 4 Expansion packs in 2.5 years. All of the expansions ranging $30 or more. 2 weeks after the 4th expansion they sold a combination pack that includes the Original game and all 4 expansions for $19.99 including optional in game items that the normal subscriber did not get access to and the only way for them to get it was shell out the additional $19.99. There was no knowledge of this "Starter pack" when you purchased the 4th expansion. The only thing that was offered to avoid liability was a 30 day window for a refund for the 4th expanison.
The fact of the matter remains that this has been done before. There is no real ethical discussion to be had. You either pay for it or you don't. They are not trying to trick you by withholding information. It's all knowledgable up front before purchase.
So stop your crying already. Gawd.

they arent tricking us. We know from the start we got to pay monthly to have the "full" version multiplayer. I'm not sure if there will be hardcore options on single player, though, and i honestly dont care much either. I'm just not willing to pay monthly to pay the multiplayer of a game thats supposed to be both. Cause i dont like being forced to do things, i pay for WoW since early 2005, money isnt the issue.
NoExplanation, one question:
what makes you so sure they wont make and sell a full price expansion?
I don't, Dopple is just an idiot. I am saying that Hellgate is not the first to do what they are doing. He wanted to state that its an ethics discussion when it is truely not. They are not failing to disclose information.
SWG was an example of failed disclosed information. Releasing an expansion just 2 weeks before they released the "Starter pack" means that they were in development at the same time and they purposely did not disclose it so they could cheat customers on the $11 difference. Not only did they cheat them of the difference they rewarded the new players with a in game personal transportation shuttle that was only available through purchasing the starter pack. If the current suscribers wanted that shuttle they had to pay the $19.99 and purchase the regular game they already had and 4 expansions they already had.
My further point is, we have no clue how much game is going to be released with the box without paying monthly. We already know that they are adding a bunch of extra features on the very first multiplayer patch. We have no other reason to assume then that is what they are refurring to about unaccessed items, levels, and skills.
Hellgate London has been in production for quite some time and it is very possible they are releasing enough content to cover their initial thoughts of a game and now expanded further.
If and when this is released if people feel cheated because it is not what they have stated, then at that point you can come back here and cry about it.
Expansion refund
The Trials of Obi-Wan expansion met with controversy as, two days after the expansion was released, the development team announced the NGE. Many players objected that they would not have purchased the expansion if they had known in advance about the NGE. Sony Online Entertainment eventually offered a refund to players who had purchased the expansion prior to the NGE.[52] Some subscribers threatened a class-action lawsuit,[citation needed] but eventually gave up once they learned it had no legal basis and since SOE was going to offer refunds.
The starter pack came out 6 days after the NGE (New Game Enhancment) which was released 2 weeks after the Trials of Obi Wan Expansion. The offer for refund was a limited 30 day window and they made it rather difficult for you to find the url.

I'm OK with what Hellgate is doing. It seems they are doing two games: the single player version, and the MMO version, and you pay for them kind of separately...
Hellgate won't be like diablo. It has to be funded cash for servers and patches. And I'm pretty sure a game like this would have a hard time staying alive without a monthly income.
And NoExplanation, I am a easy customer.
Because I dont over complicate the problem.
If the game is fun and worth while. I'll pay for it. Money isnt really a issue, just like what Fingolfin said.
Because at the end of the day all I really want to do probably is just play the game.
Your right tho, the devs made this game and then said "Oh shit, we need money."
So they chopped the content almost in half and made it look like they seperatley made the single-player and multiplayer.
Then they just put a price tag on the other half of the content and labled it "Extra Multi-Player Content"
But they didnt design each one seperatley. They did what they did before.
They made a solid single player story.
And just put it online just like Diablo.
This makes ALOT of problems when your adding the P2P.
Bassically they made a game cut half of it and make you pay extra for the other half wich isn't exactly what i call ethical correctness.
Its a bit like creating D2 to cut half the characters skills items and stuff and make you pay for them as an expansion but in pay 2 play form.
No, it's not cut in half. Something cut in half would obviously be non-functional, beacuse 50% would be missing. However, Hellgate will be perfectly playable as a singleplayer game without ever paying a montly fee.

Nice try, although this is the difference between what i find unethical and what is just very very wrong. (and probably illigal too)
Just for clarification, isn't something very wrong also unethical?

I want proof because i have counterproof.
They have all that stuff in the game, exept you have to pay extra to be able to play it, so the logical conclusion is that what they are doing is what was initial planned, you gonna tell me different?
Hellgate has a lot of stuff in the game that you have to pay extra for. True, and so does every other game out there with expansion.
We keep coming back to the point that you hold the game is cut in half, while the opposition says that is not the case. I say it is a view based from an observer.
If Flagship Studios had doe exacly the same thing as now, with people paying getting more things than others, but through an expansion line of distribution, what would the difference have made? Well, only people who paid for the first expansion would have had Hardcore. Only the people paying for the second expansion would have had a level raise. Only people paying for the third expansion would be able to create guilds, and so on.
However, there are currently features available in game at launch that you have to pay for to access. Yes, that is true, and they are there for a reason. If they weren't, no one would start off with paying those monthly fees, because there would be no extra content. And in all likeliehood, Flagship being new and all, if they did not receive that initial money from subscriptions, they may not have enought money to do the updates they want. So no, it's not a half-assed game cut in pieces. It's a game with a different format through which they deliver new content.

How? Will they somehow shut down your computer remotely if you don't pay extra for singleplayer?

When you buy the game you have the singleplayer campaign and some online (co-op) play.
But if you want the full game, you need to pay each month.
The full game contains more locations, quests, items, highlevel enemies, pvp areas, raid locations, and probably more charakterclasses, ontop of that you have 12 instead of 3 karakter slots, a much larger stash, and a much larger levelcap and you can start a guild and can join hardcore games and an rpg mode.
Which, still, acts just like an expansion
More Locations: Act 5
More Quests: Quest 1 (Shenk) - Quest 6 (Baal)
More Items: New prefixes and suffixes, katars, class-unique items, etc.
High-lvl Enemies: All monsters in the new high level area, a.k.a Act 5
PvP Areas: Not really applicable in D2, since it was never meant for PvP and was basically thrown in because they could.
Raid Locations: not applicable either, because raids don't exist in D2, although I guess Chaos Tristram is the closest, and that does require LoD.
More Classes: Assassin and Druid
More Character Slots: Nope, same in both
Larger Stash; You do have a larger stash in LoD
So LoD cost money, and you get extra features. Hellgate costs, and you get extra features. Yet you don't get the full singleplayer game without paying for LoD.
But now you will inevitably return to your argument that all of this exists simultaneously with the release of Hellgate. But there are more factors to it than that, factors that separate it from other games that go with the expansion approach.
Number 1 is servers. Flagship has said that they want better servers, and better handling of the servers, than what was done with D2. This is expensive, will cost more to maintain that B.nets servers, and is a cost other companies don't have to worry about if they just let people play on their own machines.
Number 2 is 24/7 Customer Support. This is also very costly, as you must have a lot of people that can speak different languages ready all hours of the day. D2 definately didn't have that, and WoW only has it through GM's in-game. Outside of WoW Blizzard's customer support is hiderous at times.
This requires more money than what expansions can bring in, and in return for supporting the game, Elite subscibers get Elite items, which are not overpowered but flashier, extra shash and extra character slots, hardly a gamebreaking bonus, and extra areas.
However, let us say that requiring customers to pay in this manner is dragging the customer through dog-shit. They can't make content without money, so how would you suggest they do it instead?
Quote from "Doppelganger" »
Now how in the fucking hell is that not holding back content to cash in 2 times for the full game?
They need a carrot on a stick to make people subscribe, and some extra stash and extra character slots is what does that to begin with.
Quote from "Doppelganger" »
Please don't give me that crap about "cutting half" meaning its unplayable because it would miss vital functions for a game too work, that argument is really below your standard Phrozen.
This is one of the main reasons why threads like this always turn into whine competitions. Insulting someone isn't the best way to show that one's argument was flawed.

True. Ethics and right/wrong isn't always related to each other in the same way. Point taken.

How what?
If you want to play the full game (also includes singleplayer) you have to pay each month, i'm not speaking gibberish am i?
No. You said to play singleplayer you have to pay which you don't have to. To play the complete and up to date game in singleplayer though, you need to pay monthly.
Although, if I may hazard a guess, I think you will be able to download the patches from some otehr site and play singleplayer without paying a monthly fee.

Phrozen, Dopple is saying that players should not pay-to-play for single player content. I didn't know that much has been cut and I agree with him now. That is ridiculous.
Just look at it this way. If you knew nothing about the "elite" service, and Flagship didnt anounce anything about it till after the game was released, would you still be pissed? You wouldnt even know about all the other stuff that they're adding if you pay, and you likely wouldnt be complaining. They wanted to give people a preview of what you get by paying, but instead it comes across as short changing the non-payers. Its all a matter of point of view. I think it would have been a better business decision by them to release details about elite service after people had the game for a month or 2. That way it seems more like you're paying for additional content rather than just the full, non-cut game. I agree, it does kinda seem like they're cutting content from non-payers, but I think its all a matter of perspective.
What if a company announced some cool features in an expansion pack that they're planning before they even release the actual game. Would you be pissed then? Its basically the same thing. Not sure if that makes any sense what I typed, but its clear in my head anyways. Damn my poor communication skills!!

They need a carrot on a stick to make people subscribe, and some extra stash and extra character slots is what does that to begin with.
This is one of the main reasons why threads like this always turn into whine competitions. Insulting someone isn't the best way to show that one's argument was flawed.
True. Ethics and right/wrong isn't always related to each other in the same way. Point taken.
No. You said to play singleplayer you have to pay which you don't have to. To play the complete and up to date game in singleplayer though, you need to pay monthly.
Although, if I may hazard a guess, I think you will be able to download the patches from some otehr site and play singleplayer without paying a monthly fee.
What if a company announced some cool features in an expansion pack that they're planning before they even release the actual game. Would you be pissed then? Its basically the same thing. Not sure if that makes any sense what I typed, but its clear in my head anyways. Damn my poor communication skills!!
