NUKE 'EM RICO!!! ... *ehem* You might want to consider re-formatting your hard drive.

What is normal? Normal is a concept that everyone or a majority of people are the same or similar. However, we know that everyone is unique. If everyone is unique, then everyone is different. If everyone is different, then everyone is weird. If everyone is weird, then everyone is normal.
Not to mention the labor and costs of taking it to a repair shop in the first place. Depending on the issue, if it's software related, all it takes is you actually wanting to fix it. If it's hardware related, I'd expect to pay quite a bit for it. If you want a data transfer, that's labor. If you want them to replace the HD, that's labor. Then most repair shops charge 50% more for the product then they get from the vendor.
Uh, actually, I took that into account.
It cost me only $200 to get my data transferred to a new (much bigger - 225 Gig - and brand new) HD. Including the price of the new HD and the labour.
ANYWAYS. Assuming that your Virus Scans & Etc clear up your issue, count yourself as lucky. Keep those programs on there and set them to do routine scans. They save my ass - because I like to download a lot of stuff, but I don't like to virus scan it myself. Setting up routine scans is one of the best things you can do for your computer.
Dude, it could be as simple as your computer overheating!!!
Pull off the case, and pull all the crap out of your fans. I guarantee you will find about a handful of dust, hair, and a bunch of other crap.
Same thing was happening to my laptop, but then I cleaned out the fans, and it runs like a champ again. Zero shutdowns since. Plus it runs a LOT faster.

Hmm... Thats an idea...
Come to think of it, I was having fan issues anyway, this might fix both problems... THANKS!!!
Ok, opened it up and simply took a paper towel to it. So far so good...
Tommorrow I'll get a can of air to spray and clean it real good...

But.. But.. I'm suppose to be on ignore. Liar.
Anti-Virus can be helpful, but they're rather weak in my opinion. I don't know why people are automatically assuming it's the hard drive. I mean there are a dozen things you can do. You should update all drivers by going to the manufacturers website. ESPECIALLY a BIOS Update. You could run a hard drive test. Most newer computers have an option to do self diagnostic tests when you boot up the machine. In some instances it's f12. You can download a memtest by typing it in google. Burning it as a bootable image on a cd, then running through it that way. You can check your system logs as specified. You could check your CPU temperatures to see if it's overheating.
If you're really set out to fix the problem without spending much money. I would actually take your issue to www.techspot.com They have a long list of very competent people in regards to repairing computer. They'd be much more helpful than anyone here saying CLEAN YOUR COMP! or BUY A NEW HARD DRIVE!
Otherwise I would take it to a shop. I would assume you're going to spend at least 200$ for whatever problem. The issue could span anywhere from a overheating issue, to a software issue, to a hardware failing.
Next time, don't buy a laptop. Parts are hard to replace, test, and laptops generally cost more. Secondly, don't download so much porn that your whole computer is full of spyware. Another thing, never never never ever store anything valuable on a computer connected to the internet.
The usual test if you suspect it's the HD is take some other HD (someone else's, etc.), install it, and see if the computer behaves any different. If it does, you know it's probably not the HD...
If problem persists, reinstall Windows. It will erase all viruses. And, yes, that includes downloading a version of XP SP 2 which you can definitely do...

Good advice.

We're trying to balance satisfying the fans and also creating a game that feels like our own.
Enough. Archie's advice fixed everything, though I did have alot of spyware that my previous scanner didn't pick up. So many thankyou's to Archie for the fan advice, and Jetrall for that avg program and Spanish for spybot. (Especially Archie, I can see my face going really red, taking it down to some comp shop and then it turning out to be the fan...)
Doesn't mean shit captain. You can't be rude if you sound like an idiot.

Well shit... AdRadioevolver, BurstMedia, CasaleMedia, DoubleClick, FastClick, GrokLoader, HitBox, Hitslink, InteractiveBrands, MediaPlex, Right Media, Statcounter, WebTrends Live, and Zedo.

Hopefully that fixed it...
