So, why exactly were the splash images "ice" and what did it have to do with Diablo 3?
What did the penguin have to do with anything?
What about those pictures named ice.jpg or whatever?
I don't know, but did Blizzard ever answer these questions?
If I remember correctly, the main image of the ice cracking was never really explained properly, although it was planned. At the WWI however, someone asked them about the penguin and nobody knew what they were talking about. It's possible they were lying, but it sounded like the penguin was a last minute addition of some sort.
the penguin is the signature of one of the guys responsible for art. I found the exact same penguin in the artbook of Wrath of the Lich King as the signature of the guy that wrote the foreword.
Samwise's signature is a Panda. It appears in several of his paintings. And also on Illidan's blades in WCIII.
A similar thing with the penguin is not unexpected.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

Yes, the purple penguin and images were never explained.
But they could have just meant nothing as others suggested i guess.
