All you have to do is land one punch on a bully and the whole thing disappears. Even if hes way bigger than you and can kick your ass. It ruins the bullies effort\reward ratio
I fought back against my bullies but it never led anywhere. As a girl, I tended to be weaker, and I also didn't want to hurt anyone (lol!) and I sort of had a very bad clue regarding how to fight against these people, specifically...
Yes it does. Detention affects everyone when they get tired of sitting after school doing nothing rather than being out with their friends.
Detention is the single most boring thing aside from in school suspension, where they put you in the ISS room in a little cubicle with no human contact for the whole day.
I guarantee that would have stopped a good chunk of it. Of course there are always going to be kids that don't mind but they have more serious problems. It would have quieted the ones chiming in.
thoes others kids should be charged with involuntary man-slaughter becuase thats just sick
Are you insane? NO. They're children for Christs sake. I don't care if they ran their mouth to the kid day after day, they don't deserve to be charged with manslaughter. Parents, teachers, and administrators should have done something about it. I know a few kids who used to be bully types in elementary school, and once they got older they stopped being like that. In fact, they're all good people now who regret the way they acted. 11 year old kids still don't know the ramifications of their actions.
In fact, no matter what, words alone should never be enough to convict someone of man slaughter. You'd have to be out of your mind to think so. Anyone who kills themselves over such things are suffering from emotional issues to begin with. Blame society.
If adults can solve similar things with self defence and go to court claiming self defence, then I say for bullying problems I agree with Genesis. Just deck the idiot in the face and see what he does. Yeah, it wont last long after that. And if it does, you just keep fighting. Someone bullies me, I bully back, but harder. Eventually they wont want nemore, cause they know who the man is in town.
I don't think an absolute ultimatum is a fix for this. It'll stop the common guy from saying it, like when any normal human being just says "Wow, that was gay", in the sense that we say "Wow, that was lame". We don't look down on people for saying the latter, so the former shouldn't matter, either. If anything, we just need to bring up succeeding generations with the mindset that it depends on the focus point of it.
"Nigger" is a racially-offensive word, and most people nowadays won't say it in regular conversation slang. However, since it's been publicly deemed as a more offensive slander, now when someone wants a really offensive word to say, they'll say it.
What I'm saying is, while you could theoretically just tell society that it's a discriminating phrase, make it illegal, even, it's not going to prevent people from saying it in hostile situations.
I think it's really just the root issue, here. The bullies, themselves. What if they just called the kid a bitch or a whore all the time? Would he have still committed suicide? Probably. Since he wasn't actually able to determine if he was or was not gay, the word, itself, isn't what was the issue. It was the condescending, brutal spirit behind it, which was the result of the use of the word and its focus, and was the result of the bullies, not the word.
The kid could alway counter with a bunch of gibberish meaningless explaination to the bullies. You know, like in those movies where a kid with glasses keep getting pick on. O.o

Exactly. It's the actions and the meaning behind the word.

That actually worked pretty well for me at times.

Detention doesn't work on people who get detention all the time anyway, like the bullies of my school.
did you say this because you know those teachers or you feel the need to defend your wife?
anyway, sorry. I might have been too harsh with the word idiots. when I was at school things weren't like that. when kids did bad things they got what they deserved at most teachers. ofc there were those teachers that let kids do anything and I'm talking about them. because of them things like this happen. they maybe don't feel the need to interfere and don't care or are unable to because of the TEACHER's attitude towards kids.
you are right about harassment but I'm not talking about the law, just common sense.
I DO know a lot of teachers. I have an aunt and an uncle who are both teachers (kindergarten and 3rd grade respectively), and my wife's aunt is a preschool teacher. Either way, thanks for the apology.
While it's true that there are teachers and principals out there who don't do enough to solve the bully problem, it's unethical to blame them entirely. In an education system as horribly strict as our current one, who can point the finger at a teacher who has to make the choice between stepping in and stopping a fight and possibly losing their job?
In my county there's a committee trying to pass legislation to shield teachers who stop fights from lawsuits. It's a step in the right direction, but isn't it a bit ridiculous to have to fight for this kind of protection?
Overall I think if the teachers didn't have so many lawsuit opportunities staring them in the face they'd be much more willing to step in and help out a kid who's being bullied.
We had a teacher in my old schools who got really pissed off and threw a this big wooden desk at a student
I think it missed him and slammed into the wall but holy shit it was epic

Many bullies are stronger and don't care if it get's physical though.
Physically tough like, he has to pin you down to kick your ass instead? No, I'm talking about random attacks or just something that causes pain like being hit in the side of the head with the spine of a hardback book.
If hes way bigger than you then you can't confront him while hes attacking you... You have to chose your moments. Its best to do it in the classroom because he cant retaliate like he would outside and it will get the attention of the teachers and administration at the school
He may kick your ass later on, but he'll probably stop after that if he realized that for every ass kicking he gets smacked in the back of the head with something hard
Its not about showing defiance, its about causing some type of pain. They learn like dogs learn
My dog used to attack hedgehogs... Well, actually, he still does... but hes a retard
that is soo bad words cant describe stuff like that, i have never have been "bullied" so i dunno how it feels but wow that is bad.... we should make a new rule no swearing at or about anything!!

Anything on the forums is our business, and we will deal with it accordingly.
Max Punishment: Permanent Ban (Dependent On Severity)
This kind of incident, though, just goes to show how much things you say can affect other people. A good testament to everyone here that we should be careful of how we say things, even in heated discussions, because it can leave lasting marks.
(Given, probably not suicide, but I'm sure you all get the point as rational individuals :D)
This is why it's not allowed to use such language.
This poor child hung himself from his second story bedroom with extention wire, because he was bullied and called "fag" and "gay".
And to think, his birthday was to be the same day as the International Day of Silence.
Edit: Added link to full story.
This is a very sad story..
However, pointing the blame at the language the bullies were using is not the answer. I do not think this boy even understood that the insults that were constantly being thrown at him were questioning his sexuality. Bullying in general needs to be targeted, the bully and the victim need to be taught that this is not an alright thing to do. I wish somebody could have helped this boy to stand up for himself before he took his own life.
He was 11, only a three year difference between me and him.
Being called a fag was obviously not the reason for his suicide, I've gotten called a fag before. And how is 11 too young to be aware of your sexuality? It's a sad story and bullying is a huge problem, but the article is ridiculous.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Actually, there's a girl in Britain that, at age 11, got pregnant.
So I wouldn't be so bold as to say that children that old don't know about there bodies.
And yea, it was about bullying, but calling people names in general, or what this forum would consider flaming, really can bring a person down, even to the point of suicide...
